A gaming mini PC’s electricity use depends on its hardware and what it is doing: idle draw can be far below gaming draw, and a brief peak is not the same as typical use. Reviews measured one high-performance ASUS ROG NUC 15 at about 300 W while gaming and a Minisforum HX90G at 185 W. To estimate your cost, use the system’s average wall draw, your hours of use, and the electricity rate on your bill.
How many watts does a gaming mini PC use?
There is no single wattage that applies to all gaming mini PCs. The following review measurements show how much draw can vary between two specific systems. They are examples, not a representative range, and the reviews were not a standardized head-to-head efficiency test.

| Reviewed system | Idle draw | Gaming draw | Other reported load figures | Power supply rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG NUC 15 with RTX 5080, Notebookcheck review (Notebookcheck) | 30–44.4 W | About 300 W | 137.5 W minimum to 347 W maximum load reported; the review describes the top draw as brief. | 330 W |
| Minisforum HX90G, Notebookcheck review (Notebookcheck) | 17.8–18.1 W | 185 W | 82.1 W average load; up to 262 W maximum, described as brief. | 262 W |
The ROG NUC 15 is a high-performance example, not a stand-in for a typical mini PC. The HX90G is a different system, tested in a different review, so the figures should not be used to rank their efficiency. Performance, configuration, workload, and measurement methods all matter.
Idle, gaming, and peak draw are different
Idle draw describes a system doing little beyond staying on; gaming draw reflects a particular workload; maximum or peak draw captures a higher-load point that may be brief. For a cost estimate, use an average wall-draw figure that matches your actual use rather than substituting the highest reported peak.

Does a 330 W power supply mean the PC uses 330 W?
No. A power supply’s wattage rating describes its capacity, not the computer’s constant consumption. The reviewed ROG NUC 15 had a 330 W supply, while Notebookcheck measured about 300 W during gaming and reported a brief peak up to 347 W. The supply rating and a measured draw answer different questions.

Watts × hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh
kWh × electricity price per kWh = estimated cost
Example: a three-hour gaming session
At the Minisforum HX90G review’s measured 185 W gaming draw, three hours uses 0.555 kWh (185 × 3 ÷ 1,000). At the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s preliminary 2025 U.S. residential average of 17.30 cents per kWh, that works out to about $0.096, or roughly 10 cents, for the session. This is an arithmetic estimate using that measured draw and rate, not a published session-cost statistic; it excludes a display and other peripherals. (EIA, 2025 electricity data)

Multiply the cost of a representative session by the number of similar sessions you play in a month. If gaming time or workloads vary, calculate each type separately and add the results. For mixed use, estimate or measure idle, gaming, and other activity separately, then add their kWh before applying your rate.

Use your local electricity rate, not just a national average
The EIA’s preliminary 2025 average for U.S. residential electricity was 17.30 cents per kWh. It is a dated national benchmark, not the price every household pays; the figures are preliminary estimates based on a cutoff model sample. Use the rate on your own bill for a more useful estimate, especially if your plan has time-of-use pricing.
The EIA also reported a 2025 state range of 8.20 to 35.72 cents per kWh, from North Dakota to Hawaii, for all types of electric utility customers—not residential customers alone. Do not treat that range as a residential-only comparison. (EIA, 2025 state price data)

Measure your own mini PC at the wall
A plug-in energy monitor or watt meter can show the wall draw of the devices connected through it. This is often the most useful way to estimate your own bill because the published review figures describe particular systems and workloads, not your entire setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Connect the mini PC to a plug-in energy monitor, then connect the monitor to the wall outlet.
- Record readings during the activities you want to estimate, such as idle, a typical gaming session, and other regular use. Measure long enough to reflect your normal workload rather than a momentary spike.
- Decide which devices to include. A monitor, speakers, or other peripherals count only if their power is also measured or separately estimated.
- Apply the watt-hours formula using your measured average draw, your hours of use, and the per-kWh rate on your bill. Add separate activity estimates for a mixed-use schedule.
Keep the measurement boundary consistent: a reading for the mini PC alone does not include a display or peripherals unless they are also connected through the meter.
How to interpret older gaming-PC energy estimates
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2017 report modeled 1,394 kWh per year for an older desktop gaming-computer scenario that included a display and assumed an average of 4.4 hours per day in gaming mode. It is historical context, not an estimate for a modern gaming mini PC. (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 2017 report)
