Final Fantasy VII Rebirth takes about 40–50 hours if you concentrate on the main story. A first playthrough that mixes story with exploration and selected side activities is closer to 65 hours, while a completionist or Platinum-focused run can exceed 100 hours. The campaign is divided into 14 story chapters, and the optional activities can be completed after the main story rather than being permanently missable.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth length at a glance
The right estimate depends on what you count as “finishing” the game. Published 2024 estimates separate a focused story run from exploration-heavy and completionist play, because the optional systems are substantial rather than minor diversions.

| Play style | Approximate time | What that usually includes | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main-story focus | 40–50 hours | The 14 story chapters with limited detours, exploration and minigame time | Reported by GamesRadar+ and Push Square in 2024; an estimate, not a guaranteed completion time |
| Balanced first playthrough | About 65 hours | The story, natural exploration and a selection of side quests, region activities and minigames | GameSpot’s 2024 estimate for a mixed approach |
| All side quests | About 65 hours or more | The main scenario plus every side quest, with additional time depending on travel and other activities | Push Square’s 2024 estimate; “or more” reflects variation in optional content and player pace |
| Completionist or Platinum-oriented | 100+ hours | Broad regional completion, minigames, combat challenges, collectibles and any required post-game or replay work | Push Square reported 100+ hours for a completionist target in 2024; GameSpot described nearly 100 hours of total content |
These figures are best used as planning bands. Combat difficulty, time spent learning minigames, how thoroughly each region is searched and whether replay requirements are included can move a run well above or below a headline estimate.

The main scenario contains 14 chapters. That chapter count describes the structure of the campaign, not a fixed number of hours per chapter. Some chapters are more linear, while others open up larger areas or present more opportunities to stop for optional objectives.

A story-first player can move through the chapters with only the required fights and travel, producing the 40–50-hour range. Someone who investigates each newly available area before advancing will spend much longer in the same chapter because regional tasks, treasure, minigames and side stories are layered around the critical path.
Chapter progress therefore is a poor stopwatch. Reaching a particular chapter does not tell you how close you are to the end of a 65-hour or 100-hour run; the difference is mainly how much work you choose to do between mandatory story objectives.
What is optional in Rebirth?
Optional content is spread across several systems. None is required to see the main ending, but completing several categories together accounts for most of the gap between a 40-hour story run and a 100-hour completionist file.

Odd Jobs are the game’s named side quests. They add character-focused stories, battles, travel and objectives outside the main scenario. A balanced player may accept quests encountered naturally and leave others for later; an all-side-quest run follows every available job and spends additional time moving between quest locations.
Side quests are optional for story completion. They are also one of the clearest reasons an estimate can read “65 hours or more”: finishing every job adds objectives and travel that a story-only route skips.

Open-world exploration and World Intel
Each broad region contains exploration tasks grouped under World Intel. These activities encourage you to survey the map, investigate locations and complete local objectives instead of simply following the next story marker.
World Intel is not a prerequisite for the main ending. Clearing it region by region is a major commitment for completionists because it multiplies the time spent in every area, especially when combined with side quests and local activities.
Regional activities
Regions include additional encounters, discoveries and objective chains that sit outside the critical path. Some are quick diversions; others lead to several tasks or require repeated travel. Players who explore naturally may complete a portion without deliberately pursuing a checklist, while completion-focused players generally return to clear whatever remains.
Protorelic and related investigation chains
Protorelic objectives form investigation-style chains connected to specific areas. They are optional and can involve several stages rather than a single pickup or battle. Their multi-step structure makes them more time-consuming than a typical incidental activity, particularly if you are trying to finish every regional objective.
Queen’s Blood and other minigames
Queen’s Blood is an optional card game, and Rebirth also includes other minigames placed throughout the adventure. You can bypass them when they are not part of a mandatory objective, or spend time learning their rules and pursuing their challenges.
Rank #3
Minigame skill is one of the largest sources of variation in playtime. A player who wins quickly may move on, while someone pursuing every reward or retrying difficult stages can add many hours. A completionist estimate should therefore be treated as a range even when two players choose the same checklist.

Combat-simulator missions provide battles beyond the encounters needed to advance the story. They are optional for the main ending but become relevant to players seeking broad completion, high-end rewards or a Platinum-oriented goal.
These challenges can take considerably longer than their menu descriptions suggest because failure means repeating the attempt, adjusting equipment or changing tactics. They are a key reason a 100-hour target should not be interpreted as “the story played slowly.”
Treasure hunting
Treasure activities reward players who search away from the direct route. Finding everything requires deliberate exploration and, in some cases, revisiting areas after learning more about the environment. Treasure hunting is not needed to finish the 14 chapters, but it contributes to a thorough regional-clearance run.
Relationship-oriented objectives
Some optional objectives influence character relationships or related scenes. They are separate from simply completing the main sequence of chapters. Players interested in seeing every relationship-oriented outcome may need to complete additional tasks and make time for associated activities.

Can you skip the side content?
Yes. You can follow the main scenario and leave Odd Jobs, World Intel, Protorelic chains, treasure, minigames and combat-simulator missions unfinished without preventing the main ending.
Square Enix’s official guidance is explicit: “None of the side activities can be fully missed, and nothing is locked out even when the main story is complete, so play as you like.” In practical terms, a time-limited player can prioritize the critical path, finish the story and return to optional work afterward instead of trying to clear every region before the next chapter.
This does not mean every activity is automatically completed or that a single playthrough will satisfy every completion goal. It means the activities remain available after the main story, so you do not need to treat each chapter as a final deadline for side content.

If you mainly want the story
Budget 40–50 hours. Take required battles, follow the chapter objectives and only stop for optional content that genuinely interests you. This approach minimizes detours while still allowing normal exploration and equipment management.

If you want a representative first playthrough
Plan around 65 hours. This is the middle path: accept side quests that appeal to you, investigate regions as you encounter them, play some Queen’s Blood or other minigames and leave especially demanding challenges for later. GameSpot’s 2024 estimate places this kind of mixed run at about 65 hours.

If you want every side quest
Use 65 hours as a floor rather than a promise. Push Square’s 2024 estimate puts an all-side-quest playthrough at about 65 hours or more. The “or more” matters because quest completion often overlaps with travel, exploration and optional battles that different players handle at different speeds.
If you are pursuing broad completion or a Platinum
Plan for at least 100 hours and expect the total to vary. Push Square reported a 100-plus-hour completionist or Platinum-oriented target, while GameSpot described nearly 100 hours of total content. Those goals can include extensive regional objectives, difficult combat-simulator stages, minigame completion and post-game or replay requirements.
Why two players can report very different totals
- Exploration depth: clearing every World Intel and regional objective adds far more time than traveling directly between story markers.
- Minigame performance: quick wins and repeated retries produce very different totals, especially for players seeking every reward.
- Combat challenge attempts: optional simulator missions may require experimentation, equipment changes and multiple failures before completion.
- Quest routing: completing side quests opportunistically is faster than backtracking after a region has been fully explored.
- Completion definition: “finished” may mean seeing the ending, clearing all side quests, earning a Platinum or completing post-game and replay requirements.
- Player pace: reading dialogue, testing builds, searching for treasure and taking breaks between objectives all affect elapsed time without changing the game’s content.
A practical way to plan your playthrough
- Set your target before starting: choose story-focused, balanced or completionist expectations rather than judging your pace against someone else’s total.
- Use the chapter objectives as your anchor: advance the main scenario when you want forward progress, and treat regional markers as optional decisions rather than obligations.
- Group optional work by region: doing nearby Odd Jobs, World Intel, treasure and investigation stages together reduces unnecessary travel.
- Defer activities that stop being fun: Queen’s Blood, other minigames and combat-simulator challenges are optional; postponing them does not block the ending.
- Return after the story: because Square Enix says side activities are not locked out when the main story is complete, you can finish the campaign first and then work through a checklist at your own pace.
Is 100% completion necessary?
No. A 100-plus-hour target describes an ambitious checklist, not the normal requirement for understanding or completing the main narrative. The story-only estimate already covers the 14 chapters, and the balanced estimate leaves room for a substantial selection of optional content without demanding that every challenge be cleared.
Choose the longer target only if you specifically enjoy exhaustive exploration, collecting, minigames, difficult battles or trophy-oriented goals. Otherwise, the game is designed to let you move between the main scenario and optional activities without permanently losing access to the latter.
