Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse takes roughly 20–25 hours to finish its main story. That figure is Evil Empire’s 2026 developer estimate, not a measured player average. A first playthrough can run longer when you explore every branch, struggle with difficult encounters, or spend time learning the castle’s routes. Full completion takes longer still, and multiple endings, major secrets, shortcuts, and fast-travel points give the game a substantial reason to revisit it.
The short answer: plan for a multi-session Metroidvania
The main campaign is best treated as a substantial, exploration-heavy adventure rather than a brief arcade-style Castlevania. Evil Empire places the story at approximately 20 to 25 hours. Because that is a developer estimate, it should be used for planning rather than as a promise that every player will see the credits in the same window.

There is no stable, independently verified player-average completion time available. The clearest outside indication of variation comes from a PC Gamer review: the reviewer had played about eight hours and believed they were close to the halfway point. That account suggests that route-finding, optional exploration, and difficulty can materially change the pace of a first run, but it does not justify converting one reviewer’s progress into a universal total.

What the 20–25-hour estimate actually covers
The main-story target
Evil Empire’s estimate applies to the main story. It is the most useful single number for deciding whether the game fits your schedule, but it does not specify a difficulty setting, route efficiency, amount of optional exploration, or whether the player already understands the map. Those variables matter in a vertically connected Metroidvania.
Use the estimate as a range for a first serious campaign, not as a stopwatch target. A player who follows obvious objectives and accepts missed secrets may move through the critical path more directly. Someone who checks suspicious rooms, experiments with traversal, and revisits earlier areas can spend substantially more time before reaching the same story milestones.
Why full completion is a separate commitment
Full completion exceeds the main-story window because the game has multiple endings and major secrets outside the straightforward route. No dependable independent average has been established for seeing everything, so a precise completion-hour figure would be misleading.

The practical distinction is simple:
- Story completion: reach the ending associated with a normal progression through the campaign.
- Completionist play: investigate optional routes, uncover major secrets, and satisfy the conditions needed to see the game’s different endings.
- Repeat completion: revisit the castle with better route knowledge and use shortcuts or fast-travel points to reduce travel time.
These goals overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A player can finish the story without having found every significant discovery, while a completion-focused player may spend much longer in areas that a direct run barely visits.
Why your first playthrough may feel longer
Exploration is part of the runtime
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse follows the 2D Metroidvania tradition: progression is tied to learning a connected environment rather than moving through a sequence of completely separate stages. GamesRadar’s coverage describes the vertical traversal as exploratory, which is important when interpreting the hour estimate. Time spent testing a climb, checking a side passage, or working out how separate heights connect is not filler; it is the central activity that turns the map into a puzzle.

Exploration also creates uneven pacing. You may make rapid progress after recognizing a route, then lose time when a blocked path sends you back to an earlier junction. That rhythm is normal for the genre and is one reason a personal playtime can diverge from a publisher’s estimate.
Long routes and backtracking
Creative Bloq characterizes parts of the level design as long-winded. The description matters because distance between objectives affects the clock even when individual encounters are not especially difficult. A first visit includes orientation, wrong turns, and experiments; a return visit can be much faster once the route is familiar.

Backtracking is therefore both a cost and an investment. Early detours can feel inefficient, but they teach you the structure that makes later travel manageable. If you dislike retracing paths, the opening hours may feel slower than the headline estimate suggests. If you enjoy mapping spaces and remembering landmarks, the same design can provide much of the game’s appeal.
The opening quarter is deliberately slow
Final Weapon describes the first quarter as slow. That does not mean the entire campaign maintains that pace. It means an early impression formed during the opening section may understate how quickly the game can move once its routes, shortcuts, and traversal options are understood.
Judge the length from the whole structure rather than from the first few hours. A slow start can make the campaign feel oversized at first, while the later ability to move through known territory changes the time required for equivalent objectives.

Difficulty and route learning
Difficulty adds time in two ways: failed attempts consume minutes, and cautious players may spend longer preparing before another attempt. The available reports do not establish a universal difficulty-based multiplier, so it is not possible to assign a reliable number of extra hours. It is reasonable to expect a learning-heavy first run to exceed the pace of an experienced repeat run, especially when exploration and combat are happening simultaneously.

What creates replay value after the credits
Multiple endings
Belmont’s Curse has multiple endings. That gives a second playthrough a concrete objective rather than making it merely a faster replay of identical content. The exact amount of additional work required for each ending is not established by the available coverage, so treat the endings as a reason to investigate and experiment rather than as a guaranteed number of extra hours.
Major secrets and optional discovery
The game contains major secrets beyond the most direct castle route. Finding them rewards players who revisit suspicious spaces, compare previously inaccessible paths, and remember locations that looked incomplete on an earlier visit. This structure supports a completionist loop: the first run teaches the geography, and later runs turn that knowledge into targeted searches.
Because the secrets are tied to exploration, replay value depends on your preferred style. Players who want a clear objective marker for every task may find the process less satisfying than players who enjoy forming their own checklist from environmental clues and remembered dead ends.
Shortcuts and fast travel
Creative Bloq reports shortcuts and fast-travel points. These systems address the main friction of repeat runs: crossing territory you have already understood. They do not erase backtracking from the first playthrough, but they can make a later ending attempt, secret hunt, or route test considerably more efficient.

This is an important distinction when deciding whether the campaign is worth revisiting. A replay is not necessarily another full-length blind expedition. Once the map has been learned and its connections have been activated, the same objectives can require less traversal time, leaving more attention for alternate routes and missed discoveries.
Mastery as a replay goal
Even without a new story branch, replaying a difficult exploration game can be about execution: choosing a cleaner route, reducing hesitation, and handling encounters with fewer failed attempts. The available reviews do not provide a measured speedrun or challenge-run average, so no performance target should be assumed. The point is that the design supports improvement through knowledge, not only through unlocking more narrative.
Who is likely to find the length worthwhile?
| Player priority | How Belmont’s Curse fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A single story run | A roughly 20–25-hour developer estimate provides a substantial campaign. | The slow opening and long routes may make the early portion feel drawn out. |
| Exploration and secrets | Vertical traversal, major secrets, and optional paths give the map a reason to inspect closely. | There is no established full-completion average, so the total commitment is open-ended. |
| Multiple endings | Different endings create a specific reason to begin another run. | The available information does not state how many hours each additional ending requires. |
| Efficient repeat runs | Shortcuts and fast-travel points can reduce familiar travel. | You must first learn the layout before those systems can save much time. |
| Players who dislike backtracking | The connected, exploratory structure may still provide meaningful discovery. | Long-winded routes and retracing steps are recurring design characteristics. |
The best fit is someone who values exploration enough to tolerate an initially slow route through the world. If you only want a short, linear campaign with no need to revisit areas, the same features that create replay value may feel like obstacles.

How to approach a first run without wasting time
- Expect to learn the map. Treat the first hours as orientation. Mark or remember blocked passages, unusual vertical gaps, and rooms that appear to promise a later return.
- Follow the critical route when you need momentum. You do not have to investigate every branch immediately. Revisit optional areas after the main path has made their purpose clearer.
- Activate travel improvements when available. Shortcuts and fast-travel points have greater value when opened early because they reduce the cost of later exploration.
- Separate story progress from completion goals. Reaching an ending does not prove that every major secret has been found. Keep those objectives distinct so an unfinished map does not feel like a failed story run.
- Use the second run strategically. Once you know the broad layout, choose a specific ending or secret objective instead of repeating every detour from the first playthrough.
This approach preserves the discovery that makes the first run worthwhile while preventing later attempts from becoming aimless retracing.
How to compare its length with another Metroidvania
A raw hour count is not enough. When comparing Belmont’s Curse with another game in the same broad tradition, evaluate the following dimensions:
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | What is established here |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign length | How long is the central story for a normal player? | Evil Empire estimates approximately 20–25 hours for the main story. |
| Optional exploration | How much content lies outside the direct route? | Major secrets and exploratory vertical traversal are reported. |
| Endings and secrets | Does another run reveal materially different content? | Multiple endings and major secrets provide replay objectives. |
| Backtracking burden | How often must familiar territory be crossed again? | Long-winded routes and backtracking are noted; shortcuts and fast travel reduce the burden later. |
| Difficulty effect | Can failed attempts or route confusion expand the schedule? | Review coverage shows meaningful variation, but no universal difficulty multiplier is available. |
| Repeat-run speed | Does knowledge make later attempts faster? | Shortcuts, fast-travel points, and learned routes are designed to do so. |
This framework explains why two games with similar advertised lengths can feel very different. A shorter campaign with heavy backtracking may demand more repeated travel than a longer one with effective shortcuts, while a game with multiple endings can offer more second-run value than its first-credit time suggests.
Verdict: a long first adventure with credible replay hooks
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a good fit if you want a substantial 2D exploration campaign and are willing to navigate long routes before the map becomes familiar. The main-story expectation is Evil Empire’s approximately 20–25-hour estimate, while complete discovery requires extra time that cannot be reduced to a verified average.
Its replay value is not based on one gimmick. Multiple endings create different targets, major secrets reward a second look, and shortcuts plus fast travel make repeat traversal less laborious than the opening exploration. The trade-off is equally clear: a slow first quarter, long-winded level design, and backtracking can test the patience of players who prefer linear progression.
In practical terms, buy it for the combination of exploration and revisiting—not for a guaranteed, uniform number of hours. If that design sounds appealing, the campaign length and replay structure support more than a one-and-done playthrough.
