How Long Have Wireless Gaming Controllers Been Around?

Wireless gaming controllers have been around since at least 1983, when Atari’s CX-42 wireless joystick accessory reached the North American market. That puts them at roughly 43 years old as of 2026. Nintendo’s WaveBird, often associated with wireless console gamepads, came later: Nintendo dates its Japanese release to December 5, 2002.

When did wireless gaming controllers first reach buyers?

The Atari CX-42 is a clear early example of a wireless controller sold to consumers. It was an accessory for Atari 2600-compatible systems, made up of wireless joysticks and a receiver connected to the console—not a wireless console. The Atari Museum says it was announced in December 1982 and reached the North American market in March 1983; another historical reference differs on availability details, so 1983 is the safest date to give. Was the Atari 2700 the first wireless controller?

Atari’s 2700 is described as a wireless-console prototype, not a product released to buyers. It should not be confused with the CX-42 accessory when answering when consumers could buy wireless controllers. Atari Compendium.

How does the WaveBird fit into the timeline?

Nintendo’s WaveBird is a later wireless gamepad milestone, not the start of wireless gaming controls. Nintendo’s official Japanese product page gives its release date as December 5, 2002, and describes a controller that sends signals to a receiver attached to the GameCube. That is about 19 years after the CX-42’s 1983 availability. Nintendo WaveBird details.

Why do people sometimes call the WaveBird the first?

“First wireless controller” can mean different things: the earliest known example or a later first-party gamepad for a major console. The CX-42 was a wireless joystick accessory; the WaveBird was a wireless GameCube gamepad with a documented Nintendo release date. A Westport Tech & Nostalgia Museum page calls the CX-42 the first commercially released wireless video game controllers, but that is the museum’s attributed claim, not a settled universal ranking across every controller type and market. Westport Tech & Nostalgia Museum.

Were wireless controllers the standard in the 1980s?

No. Wireless accessories existed, but that does not mean they were standard with every console. The Smithsonian dates the U.S. NES launch to 1985 and describes its standard controllers as wired. Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
