Caterpillar says AI-assisted labeling is helping move field data into simulation or training in hours rather than the weeks or months its process could previously take. The change matters because a construction site is less predictable than a mine, and training physical AI for equipment means making sense of large, synchronized streams of sensor and machine data. The timeline and data figures below are Caterpillar remarks reported by SiliconANGLE, not independently measured performance results.
Why construction makes physical AI harder to train
Autonomous equipment must interpret what is happening around it and respond through machine controls. A mine site can change, but Caterpillar vice president of physical AI platforms and construction autonomy Brandon Hootman described those changes as relatively infrequent once a site has been instantiated: “Once that mine site gets instantiated, it does change, but it doesn’t change frequently.” Construction sites, by contrast, vary more often, making it harder to rely on a model trained for a stable setting.

The system also needs more than images. Hootman said the data pipeline combines LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), camera feeds, multi-second machine-control information and performance data. These streams describe both the surroundings and what the equipment is doing, so the resulting data must be prepared before it can help improve a simulation or training environment.

How the reported learning loop works
- Collect field data. Machines produce sensor, control and performance information in changing operating conditions.
- Use AI models to annotate and label it. The reported workflow applies models to incoming data to make it more usable for the next stage.
- Feed prepared data into simulation or training. Teams can then use the information to refine or evaluate physical-AI systems, with the aim of returning useful feedback to the workflow sooner.
Hootman said the earlier process could take months or weeks: “Now you’re taking things that were months to maybe weeks,” he said. He described the newer feedback loop as taking hours, with data usable in simulation or training “within the given workday.” These are his reported characterizations of Caterpillar’s process; the coverage does not provide an independently audited baseline or a matched comparison.

Why the data scale matters
According to Hootman, Caterpillar’s digital ecosystem contains about 18 petabytes of federated data from machines, dealers and customers. He called that amount “just a drop in the bucket” compared with what physical AI needs to operate in a construction environment. For a single machine, he said, the combined LiDAR, camera, control and performance streams can amount to terabytes in a day.
Those numbers help explain why shortening preparation time is consequential: a large collection of field data is not automatically ready for training. The reported labeling step is intended to turn incoming data into something teams can use sooner, rather than waiting through a longer manual or otherwise slower process. SiliconANGLE’s account does not specify the exact labeling models, data-selection rules, or how the figures vary by machine or operating conditions.

Where CoreWeave fits—and what is established
SiliconANGLE reported Caterpillar’s account of the work following a Fully Connected 2026 interview. Separately, CoreWeave announced its Physical AI Field Engineering service on Sept. 10, 2026. The company says it works alongside customer teams using data they already own, supporting model building, validation and deployment. Its announcement describes work across strategy, simulation infrastructure, data preparation and deployment, using inputs such as test results, simulation output, production sensors and telemetry.

CoreWeave’s Physical AI overview lists example workloads including world-model training, vision-language-action fine-tuning, sensor simulation and closed-loop evaluation. Those are descriptions of CoreWeave’s broader capabilities; neither that overview nor the service announcement independently establishes the precise scope or contractual details of its Caterpillar work. Caterpillar also announced a separate physical-AI collaboration with FieldAI in September 2026; that is a distinct initiative, not evidence about the Caterpillar–CoreWeave workflow.

What the reported improvement does—and does not—show
If the timeline Hootman described holds in practice, faster labeling and feedback could let engineers use fresh field data in simulation or training sooner. That is a workflow-speed claim, not proof by itself that the resulting models are more accurate, equipment is more productive, or operation is safer. The cited reporting provides no independent evaluation of safety, productivity or model quality for this specific work.
Hootman’s account is useful for understanding the intended change: combine varied equipment data, label it with AI models, and shorten the wait before it can inform simulation or training. The reported hours-scale loop should be read as Caterpillar’s description of its process, rather than a general benchmark for physical-AI projects.
