Plan on about 20–30 hours for Ocarina of Time’s main story. A broad 100% run usually takes 35–45 hours, although an especially thorough, guide-free cleanup can reach 45–60 hours. A blind first playthrough normally lands near the upper end of the story range because puzzle solving, navigation and optional exploration add time.
Ocarina of Time completion times at a glance
There is no single official completion time because published trackers count different activities and use different player samples. These figures show the practical spread.

| Play target | Published estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Main story | 20–30 hours | GameWith’s 2026 estimate, including puzzle solving; a walkthrough can shorten the run. |
| 100% completion | 30–40 hours | GameWith’s 2026 estimate, with roughly ten additional hours for side quests and collectibles. |
| Main story | Approximately 27 hours | HowLongToBeat aggregate reported by Acclaimed Video Games on its current page. |
| Main story plus extras | Approximately 30 hours | The same HowLongToBeat aggregate category, which includes optional content without requiring every item. |
| 100% | Approximately 37 hours | The same aggregate’s completionist result. |
| Main story | 9 hours | GGDB’s current figure; treat it as an outlier representing a fast or highly efficient run rather than a normal blind first playthrough. |
| Main story plus extras | 31 hours | GGDB’s current figure for a broader route. |
| Completionist | 52 hours | GGDB’s current figure for its most exhaustive category. |
| Main route | 25–30 hours | The Gaming Guide Archives’ current planning range. |
| Story plus extras | 35–45 hours | The Gaming Guide Archives’ broader optional-content range. |
| Completionist | 45–60 hours | The Gaming Guide Archives’ thorough-cleanup range. |
For scheduling, use 25–30 hours for a first, mostly blind story run; 30–40 hours if you collect some optional items; and 35–45 hours for a broad 100% checklist. The 45–60-hour band is realistic when you insist on exhaustive cleanup without a guide.
Why published times differ so much
“Main story” is not one standardized category
Some databases record the time players report for a direct critical path. Others include normal exploration, failed attempts, puzzle solving and backtracking. GameWith explicitly includes puzzle-solving time, while the 9-hour GGDB figure is far shorter than the 20–30-hour estimates intended for ordinary first-time players.

“100%” has different checklists
One tracker may call a run complete after the story and major optional quests. Another may require every Gold Skulltula, every heart piece, all equipment and capacity upgrades, and every other collectible. A 30–40-hour label and a 45–60-hour label can therefore describe different definitions rather than contradictory measurements.
Guides change the route
A walkthrough removes much of the time spent testing solutions, locating hidden entrances and remembering where an earlier item becomes useful. It can move a player toward the low end of a published band. A blind run trades that efficiency for discovery and usually takes longer.
What a 100% Ocarina of Time run usually includes
There is no universal checklist, so decide your definition before starting. A broad completionist target generally combines the required story and dungeons with:

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Side quests and optional errands that are not needed to finish the main route.
- Heart pieces and other health-related upgrades.
- Gold Skulltulas and their reward progression.
- Equipment upgrades and capacity upgrades.
- Optional collectibles that a particular guide or tracker places on its checklist.
Because these activities overlap with the story, you do not necessarily add every optional hour after the ending. Many players collect items while naturally passing through each area, which is why a 30–40-hour “100%” estimate can be lower than a separate 45–60-hour exhaustive-cleanup estimate.
Choose the time target that matches your play style
Blind first playthrough: 25–30 hours
This is the safest budget for someone unfamiliar with the game. You will spend time reading clues, experimenting with dungeon puzzles, learning enemy patterns and revisiting locations when a new ability changes what is possible. You can still pick up convenient upgrades without turning the run into a full collection sweep.
Guided story run: roughly 20–25 hours
A route guide or occasional hint lookup reduces detours and prevents long searches for the next objective. The total can fall below 20 hours for an experienced player moving quickly, but that is not a representative first-run expectation.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Story with extras: 30–40 hours
This target suits players who explore each region, complete several side quests and collect upgrades that improve survivability. You are not stopping for every collectible, but you are also not rushing past optional content.
Broad 100% route: 35–45 hours
Plan this range when your checklist includes the major side content, heart pieces, Gold Skulltulas, equipment and capacity upgrades. Routing items during the story keeps the total closer to the lower end; searching from memory after the ending pushes it higher.
Exhaustive, guide-free cleanup: 45–60 hours
The upper band fits players who want every listed item, revisit areas repeatedly and avoid outside help. It also reflects the most expansive completionist category reported by The Gaming Guide Archives and the 52-hour completionist figure on GGDB.

How to plan a first playthrough
Set a realistic weekly schedule
At two hours per session, a 25–30-hour story run requires roughly 13–15 sessions. A 35–45-hour completionist run requires about 18–23 sessions. These are simple planning totals, not performance guarantees; a difficult puzzle or a long break can shift the calendar.
Decide whether discovery or efficiency matters more
For discovery, avoid a full walkthrough and accept that you may revisit rooms or test several solutions. For efficiency, use a spoiler-light checklist that gives objectives without revealing every puzzle answer. A complete step-by-step guide is fastest but removes much of the route-finding challenge.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use checkpoints to prevent cleanup bloat
When pursuing 100%, mark optional items as you obtain them instead of relying on memory. Group nearby tasks so a return trip handles several collectibles at once. If a checklist has a stricter definition than yours, cross out requirements you do not care about before you begin; otherwise, an apparently short “100%” estimate can expand into an unwanted 50-hour project.

Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS
The Nintendo 3DS remake, Ocarina of Time 3D, has its own tracker figures. WListDB lists 25 hours 13 minutes for the main story, 31 hours 25 minutes for main story plus extras, and 38 hours 5 minutes for completionist play.
| Version and target | WListDB estimate |
|---|---|
| Ocarina of Time 3D main story | 25h 13m |
| Ocarina of Time 3D main story plus extras | 31h 25m |
| Ocarina of Time 3D completionist | 38h 5m |
These 3D figures sit inside the broader ranges for the original game, so the same practical advice applies: budget around 25–30 hours for the story and around 35–45 hours for a broad cleanup, then adjust for your guide use and checklist.
Historical context for the “10-hour” claim
In a December 4, 2002 Nintendo of America interview, Shigeru Miyamoto addressed expectations that the game could be finished in ten hours. He said, Ten hours is not a time that anyone playing the game for the first time could expect to finish the game in.
He then added, Probably around 40 hours of play time.

The comment is useful context rather than a modern benchmark. It distinguishes a first-time player from a highly efficient repeat run, and the roughly 40-hour statement is consistent with a substantial story-plus-extras or completionist schedule today.
Is Ocarina of Time a short game?
It is shorter than many modern open-world games, but it is not normally a single-digit-hour first playthrough. The 9-hour GGDB main-story average is an outlier when compared with the 20–30-hour estimates that include ordinary puzzle solving and exploration. If you only want the critical path and already know the route, a much faster finish is possible; if this is your first visit, reserve at least 20 hours and preferably 25–30.
Quick Recap
Bottom-line planning guide
- Only the story: reserve 20–30 hours; choose 25–30 for a blind first run.
- Story plus meaningful exploration: reserve 30–40 hours.
- Broad 100% checklist: reserve 35–45 hours.
- Every collectible with little or no guide help: reserve 45–60 hours.
- Ocarina of Time 3D: tracker estimates are 25h 13m story, 31h 25m with extras and 38h 5m completionist.
