A practical planning range is about 3,000 hours or more, with slower or more casual accounts exceeding 6,000 hours. Specialist benchmarks are much faster, but they rely on exceptional efficiency, intense schedules, large amounts of funding and, in one case, alternate accounts.
This guide explains what “maxing” includes, how the major time scenarios compare, how to convert hours into calendar time, and how to build a realistic estimate for your own account.

What “maxing” an OSRS account means
In OSRS, a maxed account has level 99 in all 23 skills. That produces a total level of 2,277 and requires 299,791,913 total experience, the minimum experience associated with the Max Cape requirement listed by the Old School RuneScape Wiki.

You must train combat skills, gathering skills, production skills and the slower or more expensive skills together. Quests, diaries, money-making, bossing and raids can be part of the route, but they do not replace the requirement for 99 in every skill.

How the documented time scenarios compare
| Scenario | Time benchmark | What it assumes | Who it describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Specialist speedrun | 771:03 in-game hours | Unrestricted wealth, alternate accounts and highly optimized play | A record-style project, not a new-player route |
| Second documented speedrun | 791:50 in-game hours | The same broad ruleset and extreme execution | Another elite benchmark |
| Efficient-method model | Approximately 960 Efficient Hours Played | Methods that remain viable for dozens or hundreds of hours; often high-intensity, expensive or both | A sustained optimization model |
| Typical player planning range | About 3,000 hours to more than 6,000 hours | Mixed efficiency, learning, ordinary breaks and other OSRS activities | Most mains and new players |
The 771:03 and 791:50 results come from documented specialist runs. They show what is possible under unusual conditions, not what an average account should expect. The approximately 960-hour figure is an efficient-hours model, not a guaranteed personal result. Community documentation describes ordinary players as taking roughly 3,000 hours to well over twice that amount.
There is no Jagex-published population average for time to max. Treat these figures as scenarios with different assumptions rather than as a single official completion time.
Converting logged-in hours into calendar time
Your weekly schedule matters as much as your in-game efficiency. Divide the hours you expect to play by your sustainable hours per week, then divide by 52 for an approximate number of years.
| Weekly play | 3,000 logged-in hours | 6,000 logged-in hours | What this schedule means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 hours | About 5.8 years | About 11.5 years | A few evenings and a weekend session |
| 20 hours | About 2.9 years | About 5.8 years | A serious hobby schedule for many adults |
| 30 hours | About 1.9 years | About 3.8 years | A demanding but possible long-term schedule |
| 40 hours | About 1.4 years | About 2.9 years | Comparable to a full-time commitment and difficult to sustain |
Another useful illustration is four hours every day: 3,000 hours is about 2.1 years and 6,000 hours is about 4.1 years. That daily pace is unsustainable for many people, and real calendars usually stretch further because of vacations, work, school, illness, breaks and periods when you play other games.

The in-game clock also has limitations. Logged-in time can include banking, standing at a bank, learning a boss, reading a guide or being distracted. Efficient-hours estimates attempt to normalize productive output, while your client timer records everything you remain logged in.
Why two accounts can take very different amounts of time
Method efficiency
Every skill has a range of training methods. A low-attention method may provide convenient progress while you work or watch a video; a high-attention method can produce far more experience but demands constant inputs. Choosing the fastest method for every skill can save hundreds of hours, yet many players deliberately accept slower methods to reduce fatigue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Intensity and learning time
High-intensity activities often have a learning curve. Your first sessions may be slower than a published rate because you are learning movement, inventory layouts, tick timing or special attacks. An experience-rate guide generally describes an experienced player performing the method correctly, not your first attempt.
Funding and bank value
Money buys supplies, equipment, ammunition, runes and materials. A wealthy account can use expensive methods immediately, while a self-funded account may need to spend time earning its training budget. The speedrun rules explicitly allowed wealth from established accounts, which is one reason those results cannot be transferred directly to a fresh main.
Quest order and unlocks
Quest rewards, transportation, minigame access and equipment requirements change the route. Completing the right quests early can unlock faster training and remove travel time. Completing them late can leave you training an early-game method long after a better option was available. A new player also spends time learning quest requirements and solving unfamiliar puzzles.

Alternate accounts
Some optimized projects use alternate accounts to supply resources, assist with activities or generate money while the main account trains. A self-contained main cannot assume those advantages, so an account following the same nominal skill order may take considerably longer.

Non-max content
Bosses, raids, collection logs, diaries, clue scrolls, social activities and experimenting with new content all consume time without directly maximizing every skill. That is not wasted time if it is your reason for playing, but it should be included in your calendar estimate.
Burnout and breaks
A method that is theoretically fastest can be practically slow if you abandon it after a week. The spreadsheet author Radiokidd notes that methods vary with account progress and bank value, and that burnout affects the usable plan. A slightly slower method that you can repeat consistently can produce a faster real-world result.
Can you max OSRS in one year?
It is technically possible only under an extreme schedule and an unusually optimized account plan. To complete a 3,000-hour workload in one year, you would need to average roughly 58 hours every week. A 6,000-hour workload would require about 115 hours every week, which is not a realistic recreational schedule.
The specialist speedrun benchmarks demonstrate that an elite player can complete the in-game work in under 1,000 logged-in hours, but those runs used exceptional execution, unrestricted resources and alternate-account support. Even the lower benchmark would require approximately 19 hours every week for a year, with almost no allowance for learning, breaks or ordinary life interruptions.

For a new player, a one-year Max Cape target is especially unrealistic because early quests, unlocks, money-making and method research add time before efficient rates become available. A one-year goal can make sense as a personal challenge for reaching a major total level or several 99s, but not as a normal expectation for all 23 skills.
How long does a new player usually take?
A new player should plan toward the broad typical range rather than the speedrun figures. Your first account pays a learning cost: you must understand the interface, combat, the Grand Exchange, quest prerequisites, transportation, gear progression and the value of different supplies.
New players also tend to mix efficient training with exploration. You may pause a skill to complete a quest, chase a drop, try a minigame or earn money for equipment. Those choices make the account more enjoyable but increase calendar time compared with a tightly scripted maxing route.
A sensible expectation is therefore “several years at a normal hobby schedule,” with the exact result determined by your weekly hours and how often you choose optimized methods. Your first account can be slower than a later account even if you eventually become a much better player, because the knowledge you gain is itself part of the investment.
How to estimate your own time instead of using a generic average
- List every remaining skill and its current experience. Use the experience needed to reach level 99, not just the number of levels remaining.
- Choose a method you can actually sustain. Record the expected experience rate for your attention level, equipment and account unlocks. If a guide gives several rates, use the one matching your likely performance rather than the best theoretical rate.
- Calculate each skill’s productive hours. Divide remaining experience by your chosen experience rate. Add time for banking, travel, supply purchases and occasional mistakes.
- Add account-wide overhead. Include quests, diaries, achievement requirements, unlocking transportation, earning training money and replacing supplies. These tasks are often omitted from skill-rate calculations.
- Add a learning and recovery allowance. New methods start slowly, and high-intensity methods require breaks. A plan with no allowance will be late even if every session goes well.
- Convert the total to your real schedule. Divide by hours you can play consistently each week. Do not use a temporary holiday schedule as your long-term average.
- Recalculate after major milestones. Your bank, quests, equipment and knowledge change. A customizable maxing spreadsheet can help you enter your own rates and remaining targets, but its outputs are personal estimates rather than guarantees.
Ways to reduce the timeline without turning the game into a job
- Plan unlocks early. Group quests and requirements so one trip or prerequisite opens several faster activities.
- Protect your training budget. Track supply costs before committing to an expensive rate. Running out of money can force a slower money-making detour.
- Use suitable methods for your attention. Reserve high-intensity training for sessions when you can focus, and use lower-intensity options when tired.
- Batch repetitive preparation. Buy supplies, configure gear and arrange bank tabs before a long session so productive time is not lost to setup.
- Measure real output. Check experience gained per hour over a full session, including banking and mistakes, instead of relying only on a guide’s headline rate.
- Keep optional goals separate. If a boss, pet or collection log is your priority, record it as a separate project so your Max Cape forecast remains honest.
What the benchmarks do—and do not—tell you
The documented 771:03 run and the 791:50 second run establish that sub-800-hour completion has been achieved under a particular ruleset. They do not establish an average, a guaranteed route or a reasonable target for an unfunded new account.
Best Value
The approximately 960 Efficient Hours Played estimate is useful for comparing sustained optimized methods. Efficient hours are a model of productive play, not a promise that your client timer will reach the Max Cape at exactly that point.
The figure of 64,054 players with every skill at 99, recorded by the Old School RuneScape Wiki on 1 June 2025, shows that maxing is achievable but remains a minority milestone relative to the wider player base. It does not reveal how long those accounts took, because OSRS does not publish a complete population average for time-to-max.
Bottom line for planning
Use the specialist results as an upper-performance boundary, not as your schedule. For a normal main, budget at least about 3,000 logged-in hours and be prepared for more than 6,000 if you play casually, learn as you go or spend substantial time on bosses, raids and social content. At 20 hours per week, that translates to roughly three to six years; at 10 hours per week, it can become six to twelve years.

The best forecast is the one built from your own remaining experience, sustainable weekly hours, bank and chosen methods. Maxing is a long-term project, so a route you can repeat without burning out is usually more valuable than a theoretical record pace.
