The original Super NES version of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past takes about 15 hours to complete for the main story. A run that includes extras or follows a 100% checklist is estimated at roughly 17 hours in the aggregate figures reproduced by Acclaimed Video Games. First-time players can take longer because they are learning the map, solving dungeons, finding optional items and retrying difficult fights.
After Ganon, the SNES release gives you the ending and credits, then leaves your save available for cleanup. It does not document a separate post-ending story campaign. The Game Boy Advance edition is different: completing both A Link to the Past and Four Swords on the associated save unlocks the Palace of the Four Sword, an additional challenge area with four Dark Link battles.

How many hours is A Link to the Past?
The most useful planning figures are the main-story estimate and the longer estimate for extras or completion. They are database aggregates reproduced by Acclaimed Video Games, not an official Nintendo playtime guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
| Goal | Approximate time | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Main story | About 15 hours | Reaching the ending after completing the story path and defeating Ganon. |
| Story plus extras | About 17 hours | A broader run that includes optional discoveries and activities beyond the critical route. |
| 100% estimate | About 17 hours in the cited aggregate | A completion-focused file covering the documented collectible, upgrade and dungeon-treasure goals. |
These numbers should be treated as planning ranges rather than a stopwatch target. Route knowledge, deaths, exploration, whether you use a guide and how quickly you solve dungeon puzzles all change the actual total. The aggregate 100% figure is especially unlikely to describe every first playthrough: someone learning the Dark World and revisiting areas for missed items may need considerably more time.

What counts as “beating” the game?
For a normal story run, “beating” means following the required adventure through its dungeons, defeating Ganon and reaching the Triforce and credits. Optional heart pieces, bottles, equipment upgrades and uncollected dungeon treasure are not required to see that ending, which is why a completionist file can take longer than a direct story route.
What happens after you defeat Ganon on SNES?
The ending is the endpoint of the story route
In the original Super NES release, defeating Ganon leads to the Triforce and then the credits. The documented ending sequence does not open a new chapter, alternate campaign or free-roaming post-game storyline. Once the ending has played, the value of your save is in finishing things you skipped before Ganon.
Your save is still useful for cleanup
Post-ending play on SNES is best understood as completion work. You can use the file to search for missed collectibles, obtain optional tools, improve equipment and check remaining dungeon treasure. The game therefore supports a practical “finish the checklist” phase even though it does not add a new narrative mode.

What is in the SNES 100% checklist?
The documented completion scope is broader than simply collecting every heart container. It combines permanent collectibles, optional equipment, upgrades and a final pass through dungeons.
- 24 Pieces of Heart: Find every individual heart piece counted by the completion checklist.
- Four bottles: Collect all four bottles available for carrying restorative or utility items.
- Optional tools: Pick up equipment that is not required for a minimum critical-path run.
- Weapon upgrades: Obtain the available improvements to offensive gear.
- Armor upgrades: Secure the stronger defensive equipment.
- Carrying-capacity upgrades: Increase the relevant item capacities rather than leaving upgrades unused.
- Dungeon treasure checks: Revisit dungeons and collect remaining treasure so the file is complete, not merely cleared.
Because these goals are distributed across both worlds and across areas you may have already passed, a completion run often involves backtracking. A player who wants a clean 100% file should keep track of heart pieces, bottles, upgrades and dungeon chests separately; finishing the final boss does not automatically confirm that any of those categories are complete.
Does the Game Boy Advance version have more post-game content?
Four Swords is the key requirement
Yes. The Game Boy Advance edition adds post-game material tied to its bundled multiplayer-focused adventure, Four Swords. The unlock is not triggered by defeating Ganon alone. The Hyrule Atlas guide specifies that you must complete both A Link to the Past and Four Swords on the associated save.

How to unlock the Palace of the Four Sword
- Complete the A Link to the Past portion on the GBA save.
- Complete Four Swords on that same associated save.
- Go to the Pyramid’s eastern entrance.
- Pay the gatekeeper there to open the additional area.
Following those requirements unlocks the GBA-only Palace of the Four Sword. The palace is structured as an additional challenge rather than a continuation of the original ending’s plot. Its branches culminate in four Dark Link fights, making it a substantial skill and endurance test for players who have already finished the main adventure.
Hurricane Spin is another GBA-only target
The same edition comparison identifies Hurricane Spin as included on GBA and absent from the SNES release. It is therefore part of the expanded GBA completion target alongside the Palace of the Four Sword. A SNES player cannot obtain these additions because they are tied to the GBA version’s extra content.

Which playtime should you plan for?
If you only want the story
Use the approximately 15-hour main-story estimate as your starting budget. It assumes you are progressing through the required adventure rather than deliberately searching every side location. Your personal total can be lower or higher depending on experience and deaths; the figure is an aggregate, not a guaranteed completion time.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you want a thorough SNES file
Plan around the longer estimate for extras or 100% work, with the understanding that first-time players may exceed it. The checklist requires more than collecting obvious heart pieces: bottles, optional tools, weapon and armor upgrades, capacity upgrades and unclaimed dungeon treasure all count. If you defeat Ganon before finishing those categories, the save remains useful for returning and completing them.
If you want every GBA addition
The GBA route includes the original campaign, the same kind of cleanup goals and the separate requirement to complete Four Swords. Because the Palace of the Four Sword is gated behind both games and a visit to the Pyramid’s eastern entrance, a player interested in all GBA content should not treat the Ganon credits as the end of the edition’s available challenges.

Common misunderstandings about “post-game”
“Post-game” does not mean a new SNES chapter
On SNES, post-game refers to what you can finish on the existing save after the credits: collectibles, upgrades and dungeon treasure. There is no documented second story campaign that begins after Ganon.

The GBA unlock is not automatic after Ganon
Defeating Ganon satisfies the A Link to the Past part, but the Hyrule Atlas instructions also require completing Four Swords. You then have to pay the gatekeeper at the Pyramid’s eastern entrance. Missing either the second game or the gatekeeper step explains why the Palace of the Four Sword may not appear.
A 100% file is more than a finished dungeon list
Clearing every dungeon and seeing the credits does not establish that the file is complete. The documented checklist separately counts 24 Pieces of Heart, four bottles, optional tools, equipment and capacity upgrades, plus remaining dungeon treasure.
Useful reference for a completion run
Players who prefer a printed route reference can look for the 1992 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past — Nintendo Player’s Guide. Zelda Wiki records it as a 168-page Nintendo of America guide published with Tokuma Shoten. It is a period strategy reference for the SNES game, so check that any checklist or map you use matches your edition before applying GBA-only goals such as the Palace of the Four Sword and Hurricane Spin.
Bottom line for each edition
Choose the SNES version if your goal is the original story followed by collectible and upgrade cleanup. Choose the GBA version if you specifically want the additional Four Swords-linked endgame: complete both adventures, pay the gatekeeper at the Pyramid’s eastern entrance and take on the Palace of the Four Sword’s four Dark Link battles. For time planning, reserve about 15 hours for the main story and use the longer aggregate estimate for extras or a 100% attempt, allowing extra time if this is your first journey through Hyrule.
