The 2023 study tested laboratory electrodes, and MIT’s 2025 account describes improved storage capacity and a small structural prototype—not years of operation or standardized aging tests. So there is no defensible number of years or cycles to give yet.
What is known is that performance depends on how conductive carbon black, cement pores, electrolyte and electrode design work together. Those same choices can affect structural strength, and the 2025 capacity improvement does not establish a longer lifetime.

How long do concrete supercapacitors last?
The available studies do not report a measured service life in years or a quantified cycle life for these carbon-cement systems. The 2023 paper characterizes laboratory electrodes; MIT’s 2025 report describes a later design with higher reported storage capacity and a small load-bearing arch. Neither demonstrates long-term operation in a building or roadway.
MIT’s 2025 account says ec³ could in principle be incorporated into architectural elements and last as long as the structure. That is a prospective possibility, not a durability result. It should not be treated as evidence that the supercapacitor has been shown to last as long as ordinary concrete or a building.

For the same reason, the evidence does not answer whether energy-storing concrete loses capacity over time, or how many charge-discharge cycles carbon-cement supercapacitors can handle. Those outcomes require cycling and field-aging measurements that the cited sources do not provide.
How the carbon-cement supercapacitor stores energy
The 2023 experiment used two polished, electrolyte-saturated carbon-cement electrodes, an electrolyte-wetted separator between them and conductive graphite paper to collect current. This is a supercapacitor electrode system, not a conventional battery. The researchers describe a connected network of carbon black within cement, with hydration-related pores that provide internal surface area and routes for ions to move.

In this proposed mechanism, the accessible carbon surface helps determine storage capacity, while the pore structure supports electrolyte transport and rate behavior. A 2024 laboratory study also reported changes in conductivity and areal capacitance when researchers adjusted carbon-black content and macropore formation; its values describe tested electrodes, not a field installation.
What limits performance?
Carbon network and accessible surface area
Carbon-black distribution and surface properties affect the connected conductive network and the surface available for charge storage. In the 2023 paper, estimated energy density varied with carbon black’s specific surface area. Simply adding more carbon black is not a universal solution: the formulation must also meet any structural requirements.

Pores and ion transport
Cement hydration creates pores that can help electrolyte reach internal electrode surfaces. Pore structure therefore matters to ion transport and measured rate performance. The 2024 microstructure-optimization study reports laboratory changes in areal capacitance alongside adjustments to carbon-black content and macropores, but does not establish how those results translate to larger structural elements.
Electrolyte selection and penetration
MIT’s 2025 report describes testing different electrolytes and concentrations. It says that adding electrolyte during mixing, rather than soaking cured electrodes, removed a penetration limitation and made thicker electrodes possible. The report attributes the later version’s higher storage capacity to electrolyte and processing changes; that improvement is not evidence of improved durability.

Electrode geometry and electrical contacts
Thickness, separator arrangement and current collection affect cell design. In MIT’s 2025 miniature arch demonstration, an LED flickered under added load. The report says stress effects on electrical contacts or charge distribution may have contributed. It presents monitoring as a possibility, not as a validated sensing function or a demonstrated failure mechanism.

Strength versus storage capacity
MIT’s account of the initial work says that adding carbon black can raise capacity while slightly weakening the concrete. Around 10 percent carbon black was described as a compromise for structural applications in that particular study, not a general construction specification. A formulation for a load-bearing element may need a different balance from one designed primarily for energy storage.

Durability remains an open question
The cited sources do not quantify how cycling, moisture movement, electrolyte loss or redistribution, temperature, cracking, mechanical fatigue, corrosion of connections or other field exposure affect performance over time. These are variables that need testing; the available evidence does not establish them as observed failure modes in concrete supercapacitors.

The reported numbers describe different research versions and test contexts. They are not interchangeable product specifications or evidence of an installed energy-storage system.
| Research and figure | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Chanut et al., PNAS (2023): 20–220 Wh/m³ | A calculated energy-storage density range depending on carbon black’s specific surface area. |
| Chanut et al., PNAS (2023): about 45 m³ for about 10 kWh | An illustrative scale-up scenario for average daily residential energy use, not a household installation. |
| 2024 microstructure-optimization study: 54–2,188 mF/cm² | The abstract reports this laboratory areal-capacitance range alongside increased conductivity under tested changes to carbon-black content and macropore formation. |
| MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (2025): about 10 times the storage capacity of the 2023 version | MIT attributes the reported increase to electrolyte and manufacturing-method improvements; it is not a lifetime comparison. |
| MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (2025): more than 2 kWh/m³ | A reported figure for a version using an organic electrolyte, particularly quaternary ammonium salts with acetonitrile. |
| MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub (2025): about 5 m³ for a household daily-energy scenario | An estimate based on the later reported capacity, not a full-scale home foundation demonstration. |
The 2023 and 2025 figures should be compared as reports on different versions, with different electrolyte and processing approaches. The later report describes an order-of-magnitude increase in storage capacity, but the cited sources provide no standardized head-to-head cycle testing or field-aging results from which to infer a similar improvement in lifetime.

Is concrete supercapacitor technology ready for buildings?
The cited work supports a developing materials concept, not a verified consumer product or a demonstrated building-scale energy-storage installation. MIT’s Concrete Sustainability Hub describes future infrastructure and industry-partner directions as research opportunities; it does not establish a consumer-ready electrode kit or a construction product with a proven service life.
For structural use, the central question is not only how much energy a material can store, but whether the complete element can meet its structural demands while maintaining electrical performance. The small arch reported in 2025 is a prototype demonstration, not evidence of long-term building or roadway operation.
