Deleted text messages have no single expiration date. On an iPhone, a deleted message can remain recoverable in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days unless it is permanently deleted sooner. Elsewhere, a copy may still exist in a backup, on another synced device, in the recipient’s conversation, or within a provider’s systems. The time depends on which copy you mean—and the available documentation does not establish a universal retention period for Android texts or carrier-held message contents.
What “deleted” means—and where a message may still exist
Deleting a conversation from your phone does not necessarily erase every copy. A message might be removed from the ordinary conversation list but remain in a recovery folder, a device or cloud backup, a synced device, or the recipient’s inbox. Service providers may also handle messages during delivery, but that is different from keeping a delivered message available for recovery.

These are separate storage paths. A time limit documented for one—such as Apple’s Recently Deleted folder—does not set a deadline for the others.
How long can you recover deleted texts on iPhone?
Apple says text messages deleted on an iPhone can be recovered from Recently Deleted for up to 30 days. You can also permanently delete them from that folder earlier, so 30 days is a maximum recovery window for that feature, not a guarantee that every deleted message remains recoverable for the full period. See Apple’s iPhone guide to recovering deleted messages.

To check, open Messages and go to Filters > Recently Deleted (or use the conversation-list filter to find Recently Deleted). Select the messages or conversation you want and choose recovery. Check promptly if the message matters, because permanent deletion can happen before the window ends.
Apple also offers a separate message-history setting: users can choose to keep messages for 30 days, one year, or forever. That setting controls automatic removal from the device; it is not the same as the Recently Deleted recovery period. Apple describes this in its Messages & Privacy disclosure.

Does deleting a text remove it from other devices or the recipient’s phone?
No—not necessarily. Apple says deleting messages from your iPhone does not affect what recipients see. If Messages in iCloud is enabled, deletion can sync among your own participating Apple devices, but that does not delete the recipient’s independent copy. Apple explains the effect of deleting messages in its iPhone deletion guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you use Messages in iCloud, check other Apple devices signed in to the same account; a message may be available there if sync was not enabled or completed as expected. A recipient’s copy is separate and may remain even after your own copy is gone.

Can backups keep a deleted message?
iPhone and iCloud
Apple says SMS, MMS, RCS, Apple Messages for Business, and iMessages can be backed up in iCloud when iCloud Backup or Messages in iCloud is enabled. Whether a particular message is available through a backup depends on the setting and the copy involved; a backup is not the same as the Recently Deleted folder. Apple’s Messages & Privacy disclosure describes the supported message types and backup options.
Android and Google backup
Google says Android device backup can include SMS and MMS, and can include RCS messages when you use Google Messages. Google cautions that backup and restore support varies by app, device, and Android version. Its documentation does not set a fixed number of days for recovering a deleted Android text or guarantee restoration of a message permanently deleted from all available copies. See Google’s Android backup and restore guidance.

If you are trying to recover a message on Android, first check whether device backup was enabled and whether the message type and app were covered. A backup may help only if it contains the message; the existence of a backup feature alone does not establish that a specific deleted text can be restored.

Do carriers or messaging services keep deleted texts?
It depends on the service and protocol, and the available guidance does not establish a universal carrier retention period for delivered SMS or MMS content. Apple states that SMS sending and receiving are services provided by the carrier, not Apple. That distinction means Apple’s iPhone recovery window should not be treated as a carrier’s retention policy.

Google says RCS chats sent using Google’s RCS infrastructure are temporarily queued for delivery and deleted after delivery. It also says certain RCS connection information—such as phone number, device identifiers, and SIM card number—may be stored for about a month to maintain connectivity and handle temporary offline periods. That metadata timeframe is not a statement that delivered message contents remain stored for a month. RCS may be provided by a carrier or, in some cases, Google; SMS and MMS delivery remains through the carrier. See Google Messages’ RCS information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you recover a permanently deleted text?
Sometimes another copy may still be available—for example, in a backup or on a recipient’s device—but there is no established, universal recovery period or guaranteed method once a message has been permanently deleted from the phone’s recovery area. The result depends on the platform, app, backup settings, sync status, and whether any separate copy remains.
- iPhone: Check Recently Deleted first, then any relevant synced devices or backups.
- Android: Check whether Google backup was on and whether it included the message type and app involved.
- Either platform: Consider whether the recipient still has the conversation.
Do not assume a carrier can provide delivered message contents or that recovery software can restore a permanently deleted text. The official guidance cited here does not establish either as a reliable outcome.
Timeframes that are easy to misread
| Figure | What it refers to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 30 days | Apple’s documented iPhone Recently Deleted recovery window; messages may be permanently deleted sooner. Apple Support | How long all copies persist, or a carrier’s retention period. |
| 30 days, one year, or forever | Apple’s user-selected message-history retention options. Apple | The length of the Recently Deleted recovery window. |
| About one month | Google’s stated period for certain RCS connection information. Google Messages Help | A retention period for delivered RCS message content. |
| Up to 24 hours | Google’s stated time a device backup may take to complete. Google Android backup support | How long a text remains in a backup. |
Google’s general account-deletion policy also describes deletion from storage systems as generally taking around two months, often including up to a month-long recovery period, and says encrypted backup storage may retain data for up to six months. Those are general Google data-deletion timeframes, not message-specific retention promises; they do not answer how long a deleted text remains in a Google Messages or Android backup. See Google’s general retention policy.
