The message “There is no volume selected. Please select a volume and try again” means DiskPart did not have a volume in focus when you ran a command that needs one. Check the disks and volumes, then select the correct volume before using commands such as assign. Selecting a partition or disk is not the same as selecting a volume.
Why DiskPart says no volume is selected
DiskPart works with different storage objects: disks, partitions, and volumes. A command operates on the object that currently has focus, so a volume command cannot act on a selected disk or partition in place of a selected volume. Microsoft explains this focus requirement in its DiskPart command reference.

The error identifies a selection problem at the time the command ran. By itself, it does not establish whether a volume is missing, the partition is a special type, a prior command changed the disk, or the command sequence was wrong.

Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as an administrator. DiskPart requires membership in the local Administrators group or equivalent. Do not guess the disk number from an example: check the size and contents before selecting anything.

Start DiskPart and inspect the disks:
diskpart list disk -
Select the disk you have positively identified, then inspect its partitions and all listed volumes:
select disk <target-disk-number> list partition list volume -
If the intended volume appears in
list volume, select its number and check the current focus:Rank #2

select volume <target-volume-number> select volume
Replace the angle-bracketed examples with the numbers shown on your computer; do not type the brackets. In DiskPart’s list output, an asterisk marks the object with focus. Microsoft documents that select volume shifts focus to the specified volume and can also select by drive letter or mount path; see the select volume reference.

assign assigns a drive letter or mount point to the volume in focus. Use list volume to find the target, select it with select volume, and then run the assignment. A partition number is not a substitute for a volume selection.

If a partition appears under list partition but no corresponding target appears under list volume, stop rather than trying to assign a letter to the partition. Inspect the disk in Disk Management and establish what the partition is for. Some Microsoft Q&A reports describe special or hidden partitions in this situation, but individual community reports do not prove that this is the cause on every PC.
If you were trying to format or change the disk
First identify the exact target and confirm that you intend to erase or change it. Formatting can delete data. Microsoft’s Format documentation describes the command and warns about data loss; do not copy a sample workflow that creates and formats a partition onto a disk that contains files you need.

Do not treat clean as another way to format a volume. Microsoft describes clean as removing partition or volume formatting from the disk with focus. If the disk holds important data, do not use clean, delete, format, or partition-ID and attribute changes as trial-and-error fixes.

When the target volume is missing or the disk state is unclear
If the device is shown as “No Media,” is offline, or is absent from list volume, the error alone is not enough to choose a safe repair. Do not run destructive commands to see whether they help. Record the DiskPart disk, partition, and volume listings and inspect the device in Disk Management before deciding what to do. A missing volume can have different causes, and the available Microsoft Q&A examples are reports of individual cases rather than a universal diagnosis.
