On iPhone, they can appear on the Lock Screen, and on iPhones with Dynamic Island they can also appear in compact, minimal, or expanded layouts. The system chooses the presentation for the device and context, so the same activity may look different in different places.
What appears on the Lock Screen?
The Lock Screen presentation is a persistent view of an activity’s current status, such as progress or an update from an app. Depending on the activity, it may also offer quick interactions. It is not simply an ordinary notification banner: the view can remain current as the task or event changes. Apple describes Live Activities and their presentation contexts in its ActivityKit documentation and Live Activities Human Interface Guidelines.
How does the Dynamic Island presentation change?
On iPhone models that support Dynamic Island, a Live Activity can use different layouts rather than one fixed card. Apple’s system selects the appropriate presentation for the location and situation; developers design for the supported layouts but do not dictate every placement.

Compact: one activity in the Island
When a single activity is active, the compact presentation combines its leading and trailing regions into one view. This is designed for a quick glance at the activity’s current information.
Expanded: touch and hold for more
Touch and hold a compact or minimal Live Activity to reveal its expanded presentation, which can show more information and controls. In Apple’s WWDC26 session, “Live Activities essentials,” System Experience Engineer Adi says: “Live Activities can also expand to show more information from the Dynamic Island.” This describes the session’s guidance, not a guarantee that every activity contains the same details.

Minimal: when activities compete
When more than one app has an active Live Activity, the system can show two activities in minimal presentations. As a result, an activity may be less prominent than it would be on its own. Relevance scores can affect visibility in Dynamic Island and ordering on the Lock Screen; the system decides which presentation to show.
What changes on devices and screens without Dynamic Island?
iPhone without Dynamic Island
There is no Island presentation on an iPhone without Dynamic Island. In a specific alert case, an update can appear briefly as a Lock Screen presentation in a banner while the device is unlocked and the app is not open, if that update includes alert configuration. This is an additional alert behavior, not the normal definition of a Live Activity.

In StandBy on iPhone, the minimal presentation appears first. Tap it to open the Lock Screen presentation, scaled to fill the display. The larger StandBy view is therefore a different presentation context, not evidence that the activity has changed.

What about landscape Dynamic Island in iOS 27?
Apple’s WWDC26 session describes a landscape Dynamic Island style in iOS 27 that can provide more information. This is a version-specific development and should not be assumed to apply to earlier iOS releases. Apple’s session is available at Live Activities essentials — WWDC26.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can the same activity look different?
Presentation depends on where it appears, the device’s capabilities, how many activities are competing for space, and the iOS version. Apple’s guidance asks developers to support the available layouts while the system chooses which one is appropriate. For more on those layouts, see Apple’s Live Activities presentation guidance and custom-view guidance.
