Does a 240 Hz Gaming Monitor Need a High-End Graphics Card?

No. A 240 Hz monitor does not require a high-end graphics card simply to connect and use it. A faster GPU may be necessary if you want a particular game to render close to 240 frames per second (fps) at your chosen resolution and graphics settings. The monitor’s refresh rate and the game’s frame rate are different things.

What 240 Hz means—and what it doesn’t

A 240 Hz rating means the display can refresh up to 240 times per second when configured for a supported resolution and refresh-rate mode. It does not make a game produce 240 fps: the PC’s hardware and the game determine how quickly new frames are rendered.

For example, AMD lists 1920×1080 at 240 Hz among the modes supported by its FreeSync technology. That is a display mode, not a promise that a particular PC can render any game at 240 fps. AMD FreeSync Technology

Do you need a high-end GPU to reach 240 fps?

There is no universal GPU tier that guarantees 240 fps. The performance required depends on the specific game, resolution, graphics settings, and workload. A lightweight or competitive game may be a different target from a visually demanding game, but a monitor’s 240 Hz specification alone cannot establish what GPU either one needs.

Dell 24 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2426HG - 23.8-inch FHD (1920x1080) 240Hz Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync™ Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt
  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Choose a target around the games and settings you actually use. Check their performance on your current system at your intended resolution and graphics quality before deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile. The available evidence does not support a specific local-GPU model recommendation or a guarantee that any named card will hold 240 fps.

How to use a 240 Hz monitor with your current PC

  1. Check the monitor’s specifications. Confirm which ports support your desired resolution and refresh rate; a monitor may offer different modes depending on the connection.
  2. Connect it to a compatible GPU output. Check the graphics card’s output capabilities and the monitor manual for the required resolution-and-refresh combination. Do not assume a cable or port supports every advertised mode.
  3. Select the refresh rate in your display settings. In NVIDIA Control Panel, open “Change resolution” and select an available refresh rate for the display. If 240 Hz is not listed, check the monitor’s connection and supported modes. NVIDIA Control Panel help: Change resolution
  4. Check performance in your own games. Use the intended resolution and settings. If the frame rate is already satisfactory, the monitor does not by itself require a GPU upgrade.

What if your games run below 240 fps?

A compatible variable-refresh-rate setup can adjust the monitor’s refresh rate to track the GPU’s frame rate. AMD says FreeSync synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with compatible graphics-card frame rate to reduce or eliminate visual artifacts such as tearing and stuttering. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as matching the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU frame rate. AMD: How to Enable AMD FreeSync with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition; NVIDIA: G-SYNC Variable Refresh Rate

Dell 27 240Hz Gaming Monitor - SE2726HG - 27-inch FHD (1920x1080) Display, in-Plane Switching (IPS) Technology, AMD FreeSync Premium, TÜV 3-Star, 2X HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, Tilt

  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Whether variable refresh works depends on the monitor, GPU, driver, connection, and configuration. Confirm compatibility for your specific equipment; it is not a guarantee that every visual artifact will disappear in every setup.

Don’t confuse cloud-streaming requirements with local gaming

GeForce NOW publishes Windows client requirements for its streaming memberships, including FHD at 240 fps and QHD at 240 fps. Those figures describe NVIDIA’s cloud-streaming service and its client requirements; they are not benchmarks for rendering games locally on your PC. NVIDIA GeForce NOW system requirements

Bottom line for different goals

  • Just want to use the monitor: A high-end GPU is not an inherent requirement. Verify that your GPU output, monitor port, and selected mode support the resolution and refresh rate you want.
  • Want high frame rates in particular games: Assess the game, resolution, graphics settings, and measured performance together. A 240 Hz panel cannot determine the GPU needed for that workload.
  • Often play below 240 fps: A compatible variable-refresh setup can synchronize refresh with the changing frame rate.
  • Play through a cloud service: Check that service’s own membership and client requirements rather than applying them to local rendering.
