Where the Lithographic Stone puzzle appears
You encounter this puzzle in the Castle’s Bindery during Chapter 8, after Leon meets Ada. It blocks a wall passage needed to continue the chapter. The wall has four recessed slots arranged as top, left, bottom and right positions. One Lithographic Stone is already mounted when you reach the room; three more are loose somewhere in the same room.

The puzzle is a progression gate rather than an optional treasure challenge. When all four positions are correct, the wall opens and Leon can continue toward the Castle Battlements.
GameSpot’s March 22, 2023 guide describes the key collection detail: the three required Lithographic Stone parts are all found in the same room as the puzzle. That means you do not need to backtrack through earlier Castle areas to complete the mechanism.

The two things every slot checks
The stones are not matched by icon alone. Each face combines two attributes:
- Icon: helmet, shield, armor or sword.
- Border: square or hexagon.
A placement is correct only when both attributes match the requirement for that wall position. A shield with the wrong border is still wrong, as is a sword displayed on the wrong face. VGC’s October 15, 2026 guide summarizes the interaction this way: each stone has two sides, and you must match both the icon and the shape surrounding it.
This dual-match design explains why a stone can look nearly correct while the door remains closed. You may have the right symbol but be viewing the wrong side, or you may have the correct border paired with a different symbol. Rotate or flip the piece until the complete symbol-and-border combination is exposed before confirming the slot.

Finding all four stones in the Bindery
Leave the mounted stone in place
One piece starts on the wall. Do not remove it simply to make room for searching. Treat it as one of the four puzzle pieces and leave it mounted while you inspect the rest of the room. You can still adjust its orientation later if the displayed face is not the one required by the solution.
Search the entire room for the three loose pieces
The other stones are pickups in the Bindery. Reported landmarks include areas beside the puzzle, a breakable glass case, shelving or a cupboard, and—in some playthroughs—the fireplace or the rear cloth area. These descriptions are useful search cues, not fixed coordinates.

Pickup positions can vary between playthroughs or difficulty settings. A location shown in a screenshot may therefore be empty in your game while the stone is nearby under a different landmark. Walk the room systematically, check interactable furniture and containers, and break the glass case if it is still intact. Do not assume that a missing stone means you have entered the wrong chapter or skipped a required key item.
Use the inventory and room view together
Once you pick up a loose stone, inspect its visible face and note the icon and border. The wall’s four slots and the stones’ faces are easier to compare when you identify the pair rather than memorizing only “helmet” or “square.” If a piece appears to have the wrong symbol, rotate or flip it before deciding that it cannot be used.
Step-by-step solution
- Enter the Bindery in Chapter 8. This is the Castle section reached after the Leon-and-Ada encounter.
- Examine the four-slot wall. Confirm which stone is already mounted and identify the four positions: top, left, bottom and right.
- Collect the three loose Lithographic Stones. Search the whole room, including the area beside the puzzle, the breakable glass case, shelving or a cupboard, and the fireplace or rear cloth area if the other spots do not contain all three pieces.
- Insert a stone into an available slot. Use the interaction prompt shown by your version of the game to rotate or flip the piece. The exact control differs by platform and control scheme, so follow the on-screen rotate/flip labels rather than relying on a particular button name.
- Match the complete pair. Check the icon and the border simultaneously. A slot is not solved by matching only the helmet, shield, armor or sword.
- Set the wall to the fixed arrangement below. If a piece looks right but the mechanism does not react, expose its opposite face and check the border again.
- Confirm the arrangement. With all four pairs correct, the wall door opens and the route toward the Castle Battlements becomes available.

The table describes the required face, not necessarily the order in which you must collect or insert the stones. You can place pieces in any convenient order as long as each slot ends with its specified icon-and-border combination.
Why the door may not open
You matched the icon but not the border
This is the most common mistake. For example, a shield face can still be incorrect if its surrounding shape is a hexagon instead of a square. Compare the outline around the symbol every time you adjust a piece.
You are looking at the wrong side
Every stone has two faces. If the symbol seems unusable, rotate or flip the stone instead of discarding it. The required face may be hidden on the reverse side.

A stone is in the wrong position
The four combinations are fixed by wall position. A correctly oriented square sword does not solve the top slot, and a correctly oriented hexagon helmet does not solve the bottom slot. Return to the position table and check the slot itself rather than trying random swaps.
You have not found all three loose pieces
Because pickup locations can differ by playthrough or difficulty, do not rely on one video frame or screenshot. Recheck the breakable glass case, furniture, shelves, cupboard, fireplace and rear cloth area, as well as the space immediately around the wall.
The interaction prompt is being missed
Stand close enough to the stone or slot for the game’s interaction prompt to appear. Then use the displayed rotate or flip command. If the piece moves but the face does not change as expected, try the other listed interaction input before inserting it again.
How to search efficiently when locations differ
- Start at the puzzle wall. Scan the floor and nearby surfaces, then identify which piece is mounted.
- Check containers and breakables. Inspect the glass case and open or examine shelving and cupboards; break the case when necessary.
- Sweep the room perimeter. Move toward the fireplace and the rear cloth area, then check corners and spaces beside furniture.
- Return to the wall after each pickup. Insert the new stone temporarily if you need to see both faces clearly, but do not assume its first visible side is its solution face.
This landmark-based search is more reliable than following a fixed coordinate list because the room’s item placement may change between runs or difficulty settings.

Think of each stone as a two-sided token rather than a single picture. The token’s identity is the icon-border pair visible on its current face. Turning a stone does not change which item you own; it changes which face the wall can evaluate. This is why simply cycling pieces through slots without checking their faces can leave the mechanism locked.
For visual learners, a video walkthrough can help show the room landmarks and the rotate/flip interaction. A written table is faster once all four stones are in your inventory because it gives the exact target for every slot without requiring you to pause footage. If a video’s pickup positions differ from yours, trust the fixed four-position solution and search by landmarks rather than abandoning the guide.
What happens after the correct arrangement
When the top, left, bottom and right combinations are all correct, the wall door opens automatically after confirmation. This restores the intended story route through the Castle. Proceed through the opened passage toward the Castle Battlements; no separate code, key item or combat challenge is required to validate the lithograph arrangement.
If the wall remains closed, stop and inspect the four displayed faces again. The game is checking the symbol and border together, so one incorrect outline is enough to prevent progression.
