Lioran S3’s documented read path looks up an object’s metadata first, checks its state, resolves the stored file path, and then opens the payload asynchronously for streaming. A range read follows the same path but seeks to a starting byte and caps how many bytes the reader can return. These are author-reported details of Lioran S3 V1 Pre-Alpha, not a guarantee of stable or production-tested behavior.
How does a GET work?
In the implementation described by project author Swaraj Puppalwar, a GET starts with a lookup for the logical bucket and key in metadata. That metadata—not the key alone—identifies where the object’s payload is stored. The described sequence is:

- Look up the bucket and key. If no metadata record exists, the operation returns an
ObjectNotFounderror. - Validate the record’s state. A record marked deleted or not
Committeddoes not proceed as a normal GET. - Resolve the physical path. The metadata contains a relative path, which the implementation resolves beneath the configured storage root.
- Open and stream the payload. The file is opened using Tokio’s asynchronous file API. The described result pairs object metadata with a boxed
AsyncRead + Send + Unpinreader, so the HTTP layer can stream bytes without first collecting the entire object in a RustVec.
This design keeps the logical object name separate from the filesystem location and allows the response layer to consume the payload through a reader. It does not, by itself, establish a particular throughput or latency.
How do range reads work?
The described range path repeats the metadata lookup, state validation, and physical-path resolution used by GET. Once the file is open, it seeks to the requested start position with SeekFrom::Start(start) and limits the reader with file.take(length). In other words, the implementation reads a bounded portion of the same stored object; the author does not describe making a separate object for each range.

The implementation description does not specify how the HTTP API parses a Range header or exposes range results to clients. It does not establish end-offset inclusivity, support for multiple ranges, invalid-range handling, status codes, Content-Range headers, conditional requests, or other client-visible protocol details. Do not assume those details match AWS S3 or another server.
What happens if the file is missing?
There is an important difference between an absent key and broken storage state. If no metadata record exists for the bucket and key, the described result is ObjectNotFound. If metadata says the object is committed but its physical file cannot be found, the author describes that as a storage error instead. The record exists, but the bytes it points to are missing.

Keeping those cases distinct helps diagnose failures: the first concerns object lookup; the second indicates a mismatch between committed metadata and the payload on disk.

The author says head_object performs metadata validation without opening or streaming the payload. Use HEAD when you need the object’s metadata but do not need its bytes. Use GET when you need the payload, and a range read when you need only a bounded portion. The project’s TypeScript guide also demonstrates bucket.head(key) for metadata and bucket.getRange for partial reads; those examples do not establish HTTP response behavior.

What this means for performance
The project describes streaming through bounded buffers, but the available material reports no numeric GET benchmark or measured performance figure. The read path has several potential contributors to latency: metadata lookup, file open, seek for a range, disk or cache reads, network transfer, TLS or a reverse proxy, and client receive behavior. A warm operating-system page cache and a cold read can involve different physical-storage work, so a single timing would not describe every read.
As Puppalwar puts it, “A fast read from the wrong physical object is not a successful optimization.” That is an implementation point, not a benchmark result.

Scope and maturity
Lioran S3 V1 Pre-Alpha is described by its project as a self-hosted, single-node object-storage server. RocksDB stores metadata, while object payloads live on the filesystem. The project says its current server exposes a native REST API and does not yet provide drop-in AWS S3 API compatibility, so do not assume an AWS S3 client will work unchanged.
