The five copy-and-paste prompts below separate claims, surface uncertainty, request evidence, test citations against sources, and turn remaining doubts into a verification checklist. You still need to open the sources and decide whether they support the answer.
Why an AI answer needs checking
Fluent, confident wording is not proof. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can produce fabricated quotes, studies, citations, and references, and advises users to check important information directly. Google Search Central likewise says generative models predict likely word sequences rather than retrieve facts, and recommends manual fact-checking of AI-generated content before publication.

A citation is a lead to inspect, not a guarantee. In a 2023 domain-specific test by Guido Zuccon, Bevan Koopman, and Razia Shaik, 50.6% of answers were correct or partially correct, and only 14% of suggested references existed. Even references that existed often failed to support the claims attributed to them. Those figures describe that study’s test setup; they are not current accuracy or citation rates for all models, topics, or questions.
No broad, current evidence establishes that any particular prompt reliably improves accuracy across today’s AI models. Treat these prompts as a way to expose uncertainty and organize your checking—not as a guarantee.

Five prompts to inspect an answer
Paste the answer you want to check after each prompt, or ask the model to apply the prompt to its previous response. For external claims, use web search or authoritative source documents when available, then inspect the pages yourself.
1. Break the answer into individual claims
Break your answer into the individual factual claims it depends on. Mark which are directly supported by the information I gave you, which are assumptions or inferences, and which you cannot verify.
This helps distinguish what follows from your own material from what the model added. A claim labeled “supported” still needs checking if the supplied material itself is incomplete or wrong.

2. Ask what could be wrong or out of date
For each claim, state what could make it wrong or outdated. If you are uncertain, say so plainly rather than filling the gap with a guess.
Pay particular attention to claims about events after the model’s knowledge cutoff, changing rules or product details, and facts the answer presents without a clear basis. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT’s knowledge may not include later events unless tools are used.
3. Request evidence you can open
For each important external claim, give the original or most authoritative source you can identify, with a direct link and the specific passage or data that supports it. If you cannot find one, say that.

Prefer primary sources for laws, official guidance, research papers, product documentation, and quoted statements. A link that looks plausible is not enough: open it, confirm the page exists, and locate the passage or data. Search-enabled answers may help with current or niche questions, but OpenAI cautions that search can miss relevant information because of technical issues, paywalls, or site preferences.
4. Check whether each source supports its claim
Compare each claim with the cited source. Tell me whether the source directly supports it, only partly supports it, or does not support it. Do not treat a citation's existence as proof.
Check the source yourself, especially for claims that depend on a qualification, date, sample, or definition. A source may be real yet say something narrower than the answer suggests—or nothing relevant at all.

5. Get a prioritized verification checklist
List the claims I should verify myself before acting on or sharing this answer, prioritizing current, numerical, quoted, technical, and consequential claims. For each, say what source would resolve it.
Use the checklist to decide what to verify first. Numbers, quotations, technical details, current facts, and claims with real-world consequences deserve closer source checks than low-stakes brainstorming.

How much checking is enough?
Match the effort to the consequences. For routine brainstorming, it may be enough to treat the answer as a draft and check any factual detail you plan to repeat. Before publishing, making a decision, or sharing a consequential claim, trace important statements to reliable sources and verify the wording, date, and context yourself. OpenAI’s advice is: “Use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.” Google Search Central similarly says, “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.”
If you use AI in an organization, the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s voluntary AI Risk Management Framework and its generative-AI profile can help structure broader risk-management work. The profile was released on 2024-07-26; it is organizational guidance, not a consumer prompt recipe.
What these prompts cannot establish
An AI system reviewing its own answer is not independent confirmation. It can repeat an error, invent a source, or misread a real one. Even search access does not remove those risks: links may fail, and a source may not support the claim. The reliable check is to inspect relevant source material and judge the fit yourself.
