Leverage lets you control a crypto position larger than the cash you deposit. That means gains and losses are calculated on the full position, not just your collateral. At 10× leverage, a 5% adverse price move is approximately a 50% loss of the initial margin before fees and funding. A margin call or automatic liquidation begins when your account equity falls below the venue’s maintenance-margin requirement, usually before your entire deposit is gone.
What crypto leverage changes
Without leverage, a $1,000 purchase gives you roughly $1,000 of exposure. With 10× leverage, the same $1,000 posted as initial margin can control a position worth about $10,000. The exchange lends or otherwise extends trading capacity for the remainder, while your collateral absorbs gains, losses, fees and funding payments.

The important consequence is that price changes apply to the $10,000 notional position. A 1% move is therefore about $100, not $10. The CFTC summarizes the effect this way: “Profits and losses related to this volatility are amplified in margined futures contracts.” Binance’s futures documentation similarly states that leverage can magnify profits or losses by the same magnitude.

A 10× leverage loss example
Assume a trader deposits $1,000 as initial margin and opens a 10× long position. The approximate notional value is $10,000.
| Price move against the position | Approximate loss on $10,000 notional | Share of the $1,000 initial margin |
|---|---|---|
| 1% | $100 | 10% |
| 2% | $200 | 20% |
| 5% | $500 | 50% |
| 8% | $800 | 80% |
| 10% | $1,000 | 100% |
This is arithmetic, not a universal liquidation schedule. A 5% adverse move costs about half the initial margin before trading fees, liquidation fees and funding. A move near 10% would mathematically consume the original margin, but forced liquidation normally occurs earlier because the exchange must preserve maintenance margin and cover closing costs.
For a short position, the direction reverses: a price increase creates the loss. The same notional calculation applies, so a 5% rise against a 10× short also represents roughly half of the starting margin before costs.

Initial margin opens the trade
Initial margin is the collateral required to establish a leveraged position. At 10× leverage, the simple starting requirement is approximately 10% of notional value. Exchanges can impose different requirements by contract, account type, collateral asset and position size.
Maintenance margin keeps it open
Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires while the position remains open. It is generally lower than initial margin, but it is not a fixed percentage for every trade. Larger positions can move into higher maintenance-margin tiers, and the schedule can differ between contracts.
The call is an equity threshold
A margin call occurs when your margin balance or account equity no longer covers the maintenance requirement. Kraken describes maintenance margin as the equity needed to avoid a margin call. Depending on the platform, you may be able to add collateral, reduce the position or close it yourself. Crypto derivatives often use automated enforcement rather than a traditional telephone call.

Some venues begin partial liquidation, reducing the position until the account returns above the requirement. Others can close the whole position, apply a liquidation fee and use additional account mechanisms if the market moves too quickly. The exact sequence is set by the contract rules.

Exchanges cannot safely wait until equity reaches zero. They need enough remaining value to pay execution costs, fees and the maintenance requirement. Liquidation engines therefore act when the account approaches the exchange’s risk threshold, not when the simple leverage arithmetic says the entire deposit has been lost.
Fast markets create another difference between a theoretical and an actual liquidation price. The liquidation engine may execute across several order-book levels, and the final fill can differ from the trigger. If the market gaps or liquidity disappears, losses can exceed the posted collateral. The CFTC warns that leveraged virtual-currency futures may require a trader to refill margin or close a position and can produce losses greater than the initial investment.
What determines your liquidation price
There is no single crypto-wide liquidation formula. The relevant price depends on the current contract and account settings.
- Entry price: Your average fill establishes the starting point for unrealized profit or loss.
- Direction: Long positions are threatened by falling prices; short positions by rising prices.
- Position size and notional value: Losses accumulate on the full position, and larger positions may enter higher risk tiers.
- Leverage tier: Maximum leverage and maintenance requirements can change as notional size increases.
- Maintenance-margin schedule: The threshold may be a percentage, a fixed amount, or a tiered formula.
- Mark price and index methodology: The trigger can use a calculated reference price instead of the last trade.
- Trading and liquidation fees: Costs reduce equity and can move the effective threshold closer.
- Funding payments: Periodic payments on perpetual contracts add to or subtract from available margin.
- Collateral asset: If collateral itself changes value, the account’s usable equity changes even when the contract price does not.
- Margin mode: Isolated and cross margin allocate collateral differently.
A simplified long-position relationship is:
equity at liquidation ≈ maintenance margin + closing costs

Combining those relationships can produce an estimate, but it should not replace the venue’s live liquidation calculator. The exchange’s current contract specification is authoritative because it includes its tier table, mark-price rules and fee treatment.
Mark price is often more important than the last traded price
Many derivatives platforms use a mark price, usually derived from an index of underlying spot markets, to calculate unrealized profit and trigger liquidation. The last trade can briefly print above or below fair value because of a thin order book or a single aggressive order. Using a reference price helps reduce manipulation and unnecessary liquidations, but it also means the displayed liquidation threshold may be reached even when the latest trade appears not to have touched it.
Read the contract’s description to find out whether liquidation uses mark price, index price or another method, and check how often that reference is updated. During extreme volatility, the mark price and the price shown on a simple spot chart can diverge materially.
Isolated versus cross margin
Isolated margin
Isolated margin assigns a specified collateral amount to one position. If that position is liquidated, the intended loss is generally confined to the collateral allocated to it, subject to the platform’s rules and any deficit procedures. Isolated mode makes the maximum planned loss easier to identify, but it does not prevent a rapid liquidation or guarantee that execution will occur at the displayed price.
Cross margin
Cross margin pools eligible account collateral across positions. A profitable position can support a losing one, and additional account equity can delay liquidation. The trade-off is broader exposure: a severe move can consume funds that were not originally assigned to the individual position and can threaten multiple positions at once.
Neither mode is automatically safer. Isolated margin limits the collateral allocated to a trade; cross margin can be useful for a hedged portfolio but requires monitoring the account as a whole.

Why leverage limits and maintenance tiers matter
An advertised maximum such as 20×, 50× or 100× is not a promise that every position can use that multiple. Exchanges commonly reduce permitted leverage and raise maintenance requirements as notional size grows. The account may therefore have a different liquidation distance after you add to a position, even if the market price has not moved.
Before opening a trade, inspect the tier table for the exact contract. Record the maximum notional in each tier, the initial-margin rate, the maintenance-margin rate and any fixed maintenance amount. If your position crosses a tier, recalculate the threshold rather than relying on the original estimate.

| Comparison point | Why it changes your risk | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum leverage | Higher leverage places liquidation closer to entry. | Maximum and currently selected leverage for the contract. |
| Maintenance tiers | Large positions may require more equity. | Notional bands and rates for your size. |
| Margin mode | Determines whether one position or the wider account supplies collateral. | Isolated, cross or portfolio treatment. |
| Price used for liquidation | Mark or index prices can differ from the last trade. | Reference construction and update frequency. |
| Liquidation method | Partial liquidation may reduce exposure; full liquidation closes it. | Order sequence, fees and any remaining-position rules. |
| Funding and fees | Recurring payments and closing costs reduce equity. | Funding interval, rate calculation and liquidation fee. |
| Collateral assets | Collateral value can change independently of the contract. | Accepted assets, haircuts and conversion rules. |
| Loss-sharing or auto-deleveraging | Extreme deficits can affect profitable positions or the insurance fund. | Insurance-fund and auto-deleveraging provisions. |
These differences mean that a liquidation price copied from one exchange cannot safely be used on another.
What published liquidation data does and does not show
An arXiv study published in 2021 reported a 3.51% daily forced-liquidation rate for long positions and 1.89% for short positions in the cited BitMEX perpetual-futures sample. The same sample reported average leverage of 60× among traders who were force-liquidated.
Those figures describe that sample, market and period only. They are not a forecast for every exchange, asset or year. They do illustrate why very high leverage leaves little room for ordinary crypto volatility: a small adverse move can reach the maintenance threshold before a trader has time to react.
A practical process for estimating and controlling risk
- Define the maximum dollar loss. Decide how much account equity you can lose on one trade before selecting leverage.
- Calculate notional exposure. Multiply your planned collateral by the chosen leverage, then check the venue’s tier table to confirm the permitted size.
- Enter the exact contract settings. Use entry price, direction, quantity, margin mode, collateral asset and current leverage in the venue’s liquidation calculator.
- Add realistic costs. Include opening and closing fees, expected funding and a buffer for spread or slippage.
- Place a preplanned stop. A stop placed before the liquidation threshold gives the position a chance to exit while there is still usable margin. It is not guaranteed during a gap or illiquid move.
- Monitor account equity, not only price. In cross margin, watch total collateral and all open positions. In isolated margin, check the position’s remaining margin.
- Reduce exposure when conditions change. Lower leverage, close part of the position or add collateral only if doing so remains consistent with your loss limit.
- Keep an emergency buffer. Do not commit every available dollar as collateral; fees, funding and mark-price changes can consume the remaining margin.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Treating leverage as a profit target
Choosing 20× because the platform allows it turns a modest price fluctuation into an account-level event. Select position size from the loss you can tolerate, then use the lowest leverage that provides the needed capital efficiency.
Best Value
Using the simple 1 ÷ leverage rule as a guarantee
The rough idea that 10× leverage implies liquidation after a 10% adverse move ignores maintenance margin, fees, funding, tiers and the mark price. Treat it as an intuition for sensitivity, not a liquidation quote.
Adding collateral without reassessing the trade
Adding margin can move liquidation farther away, but it also increases the amount of capital at risk. Recalculate the total possible loss and decide whether closing part of the position is more appropriate.
Assuming a stop always prevents liquidation
Stops depend on market liquidity and execution. A fast move can skip the requested price, and a stop may fail to trigger if the venue is unavailable. Keep leverage low enough that ordinary slippage does not immediately consume the account.
Recommended Free Tools
Ignoring funding and collateral volatility
Perpetual-contract funding can steadily reduce equity, while volatile collateral can fall in value alongside the position. Include both effects in the margin buffer instead of watching only the quoted contract price.
Bottom line for a 10× position
At 10× leverage, every 1% move against the position is approximately a 10% loss of initial margin before costs. A 5% adverse move therefore removes about half of the starting margin, and liquidation normally arrives before the theoretical 10% wipeout because maintenance margin and closing costs must be preserved. The dependable liquidation price is the one calculated from the current venue’s contract rules, mark-price method, tier, fees, funding and margin mode. Lower leverage, smaller notional size, appropriate isolated collateral and a preplanned exit reduce the chance that a routine market move becomes a forced liquidation.
