Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a time-bounded session lease to represent whether a player is still present, and renew it only when the server accepts a valid heartbeat or rejoin. If a connection drops, keep the player in a temporary reconnectable state; if the lease expires without a successful rejoin, mark the session stale and clean it up. This separates a brief network interruption from a player who has actually left.
What a heartbeat and a lease actually track
A heartbeat is a renewal signal; a lease is the time-limited claim that the signal keeps alive. The important design choice is what that claim represents: a transport connection, lobby, room, actor, or player session. Those are different records, and renewing one does not necessarily renew the others.

For example, Unity Lobby uses a host heartbeat to keep a lobby from being marked inactive, while Unity Relay uses transport PING messages to prevent a connection timeout. A reachable transport does not by itself prove that the player is actively playing or that a game session can be resumed. Unity Lobby heartbeat documentation and Unity Relay server documentation describe these distinct scopes.

Design presence as a bounded state transition
Do not map every socket close directly to “player left.” Instead, model presence with explicit states and a deadline. A practical lifecycle is:
#1 Best Overall
- Guild Wars allows you to instantly travel to the beginning of any quest that you've previously unlocked. You'll never spend days playing only to discover that choices you made early on have left you with a permanently uncompetitive character, because the unique skill system in Guild Wars allows infinite experimentation but doesn't allow bad decisions to ruin a character. And you'll never meet new players only to discover that you can't play with them or compete against them because their characters are on a different server than yours; in Guild Wars, all characters live in one seamless world.
- Presenting Guild Wars a Competitive Online Role Playing Game with an emphasis on tactical combat. In single player multiplayer and guild-based missions players will explore a fantasy world while pursuing professions and gaining skills that help them develop and advance their unique character.Guild Wars is the first title from Seattle-based ArenaNet which was founded by key members of the creative teams behind the hit games Warcraft StarCraft and Diablo as well as Battle.net the most-successful gaming network in the world.Guild Wars offers cooperative group combat single player missions and large head-to-head guild battles. While each combat experience will be different achievements will be permanent so that the character grows and progresses over time. Unique items special abilities and a wide variety of skills add meaningful value for the player and for his comrades. Missions are not scripted adventures but are tactical battlegrounds where victory or loss is determined by skill and teamwork. Free Online Play (Internet Connection Required)
- The game includes integrated support for guilds, with guild banners and halls, chat rooms and forums -- guilds can challenge other guilds to battle, compete for control of key parts of the world, and be ranked on a worldwide ladder
- Unique Streaming Technology ArenaNet's unique streaming technology forever eliminates the concept of patching a game. You don't have to wait a month for the next big patch to experience new content. Instead, the game constantly and intelligently streams new content to your computer in the background while you play. The world can change continually. This allows us to build a much more dynamic game world than any that has existed before.
- Built for Competition After learning the game and building up your first character, you may choose to test your skills in head-to-head competition or guild warfare. The game is designed to reward player skill and teamwork, not time spent playing, so you won't need to spend hundreds of hours leveling up your character to compete. The game includes integrated support for guilds, with guild banners and halls, chat rooms and forums. Guilds can challenge other guilds to battle, compete for control of key parts of the world, and be ranked on a worldwide ladder.
- Connected: the server has an authenticated connection associated with the player session.
- Reconnecting: the connection was lost or stopped renewing, but the session remains reclaimable until its grace deadline.
- Expired: no accepted renewal or rejoin arrived before the deadline; the session is stale and normal cleanup can proceed.
Each accepted renewal moves the expiry deadline forward. When the connection drops, retain the player/session identity for a bounded grace period rather than declaring a permanent departure immediately. The duration is a game policy: it should reflect expected transient interruptions and how long the game can safely preserve the state, not an assumed universal timeout.
Reconnect without creating a duplicate player
A reconnect establishes a new transport connection. The server should authenticate the returning client and attach that connection to the existing player/session record, then renew presence only after it accepts the rejoin. This avoids treating transport identity as player identity.
Protect the handoff from delayed events. For instance, an old connection may deliver a late leave notification after the new connection has already resumed. Use a connection generation, session version, or equivalent ownership check so that an obsolete connection cannot clear a newer one. This is an implementation safeguard, not a behavior guaranteed by the providers below.
Photon PUN 2: rejoin within the room’s retention window
Photon PUN 2 documents Quick Rejoin using an existing token, room, and game-server address. Rejoin is possible only while the server still treats the player as active; PlayerTTL is required, and the documentation does not prescribe one universal PlayerTTL value. Configure it to match the game’s reconnect policy rather than assuming a fixed provider-wide interval. See Photon PUN 2 disconnect and rejoin guidance.
Choose the renewal signal for the state you care about
Decide whether presence means “network reachable,” “session retained,” or “currently participating.” Use a renewal signal whose scope matches that meaning. A transport ping can maintain a connection; an application heartbeat can renew a player-session lease; validated gameplay activity can support a more specific participation signal. None should be interpreted as proof of active play unless the game defines and validates it that way.
Keep provider timeouts in their own context
| System | What is renewed or retained | Documented timing or behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Unity Lobby | Lobby activity, maintained by the host heartbeat | Unity documentation lists a 30-second default active lifespan and says project-level configuration is available. With Multiplayer Services SDK sessions, sessions are kept alive automatically and manual heartbeat pings are not needed. Lobby updates count only when lobby properties change; no-op updates and changes only to host player data do not count. Source |
| Unity Relay | Transport connection liveness | Unity documentation lists a 10-second default client disconnect TTL. It describes a 60-second TTL when the host is alone after BIND and before another peer connects, and recommends periodic PING messages to prevent unintended timeout. These are Relay transport rules, not a general game-presence grace period. Source |
| Photon PUN 2 | Whether a disconnected player can rejoin a room | Quick Rejoin depends on the player still being treated as active and on PlayerTTL; the cited documentation does not establish one universal PlayerTTL value. Source |
| PubNub Presence | Joined presence state | Heartbeat or subscribe activity renews presence; PubNub documents a TIMEOUT event when activity is not received within the configured interval. Source |
These numbers are not interchangeable. Unity Lobby’s active lifespan, Relay’s disconnect TTL, Photon’s PlayerTTL, and an application’s session lease govern different systems and outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Expire abandoned state and recover from missed events
A finite expiry prevents abandoned sessions from remaining falsely online forever. Store a deadline with the state, and make expiry trigger deterministic cleanup: mark the player absent or stale, release room or match resources as appropriate, and notify interested systems. Redis’s game-session tutorial demonstrates room records with TTLs and uses WATCH/MULTI for optimistic concurrency control. It also describes lifecycle notifications via Pub/Sub as fire-and-forget; where missed events matter, pair notifications with a durable log or a snapshot/reconciliation path. Redis game-session state tutorial.
Presence events are useful for fast updates, but they should not be the only source of truth if downstream systems must recover after a dropped notification. Reconcile against authoritative session state and its expiry deadline.
Make reconnect retries safe and bounded
Clients should avoid retrying in lockstep after an outage. Exponential backoff with random jitter spreads attempts over time; set retry limits or a stopping condition that matches the session’s remaining grace period. The node-redis documentation provides one implementation example: exponential backoff capped at 3,000 ms plus random jitter from 0–100 ms. Those are values in its example, not a universal prescription. node-redis reconnect guidance.
A WebSocket reconnect likewise creates a new TCP connection, so keep session identity separate from connection identity, retain session state only for a bounded period, and remove expired presence. WebSocket reconnection guide.
Quick Recap
Implementation checks
- Scope: name the record renewed by each signal—connection, lobby, room, or player session.
- Acceptance: renew application presence only after validating the heartbeat or accepting the rejoin.
- Grace: define a finite reclaim window and what the game does when it ends.
- Ownership: ensure an old connection’s delayed close or leave event cannot invalidate a newer connection.
- Cleanup: expire abandoned records and make recovery possible if a notification is missed.
- Retry load: use backoff and jitter, and stop attempts when the session can no longer be reclaimed.
