Enterprise Products Partners vs. Enbridge: Which Income Investment Fits Your Portfolio?

Neither Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) nor Enbridge (ENB) is a universal income winner. EPD is a U.S. publicly traded limited partnership with a broad midstream network; Enbridge is a Canadian corporation with pipelines, gas utilities and storage, and renewable power. Their published cash payouts and coverage measures are not directly comparable, and the information below does not establish which has the higher current yield. Your decision should turn on security structure, business mix, cash-flow support, currency, and the tax treatment that applies to your account and residence.

What are you buying: EPD units or Enbridge shares?

Enterprise Products Partners L.P. is a Delaware publicly traded limited partnership. Its common units trade on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker EPD. Enbridge Inc. is a Canadian issuer, and its common shares are a different security with a different issuer structure. These distinctions can matter for investor reporting and taxes, not just for the payout label. Enterprise’s SEC company filing

Enbridge says tax treatment varies with a shareholder’s country of residence. The available company information does not determine an individual’s withholding, reporting obligations, tax outcome, or after-tax return. Check the rules for your country, account type, and broker, and consult a qualified tax professional if the treatment is material to your choice. Enbridge dividend information

How do their businesses differ?

Enterprise: a midstream network across energy products

Enterprise describes a network serving natural gas, natural gas liquids (NGLs), crude oil, petrochemicals, and refined products. In its 2025 investor letter, the partnership reported equivalent pipeline transportation volumes of 13.7 million barrels per day, up 5% from 2024. Volumes for NGLs, crude oil, refined products, and petrochemicals were 8.3 million barrels per day, also up 5%. These are company-reported operating figures, not a guarantee of future throughput. Enterprise 2025 investor letter

Enterprise said growth in gross operating margin from fee-based businesses more than offset weakness in two more economically sensitive businesses in 2025. That is management’s description of one year’s results; it does not mean all of the partnership’s activity is insulated from commodity markets, volumes, counterparties, or economic conditions. Enbridge: pipelines plus gas and power businesses

Enbridge identifies four core business areas: liquids pipelines; gas transmission and midstream; gas distribution and storage; and renewable power. That mix differs from Enterprise’s midstream-focused network and may appeal to investors seeking exposure across several infrastructure categories. Diversification does not remove sector-wide operational, regulatory, financing, or market risks. Enbridge 2026 shareholder letter

What do the companies report about cash payouts?

Measure Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) Enbridge (ENB)
Published payout Enterprise reported a declared distribution of $2.175 per common unit for 2025, 3.6% higher than 2024. Its Q4 2025 distribution rate was $0.55 per unit, or $2.20 annualized. Company-reported figures. Enterprise 2025 results Enbridge lists a 2026 quarterly dividend of $0.97 and an annualized amount of $3.88 per common share. Its dividend page says the increase announced in December 2025 was 3% and the 31st consecutive annual increase. Enbridge dividend information Enbridge 2026 shareholder letter
Coverage or payout framework Enterprise reported $7.9 billion in Operational DCF for 2025, 1.7× coverage of distributions declared for that year, and $3.2 billion of retained DCF. These are the partnership’s reported measures for 2025. Enterprise 2025 results Enbridge sets a target dividend payout ratio of 60%–70% of DCF. This is a company target, not a promise that future dividends will be paid at a particular level. Enbridge dividend information

Operational DCF, DCF, coverage, and payout ratios are company-defined measures. Read each issuer’s definitions and financial statements before treating these figures as directly comparable. Enterprise’s coverage ratio and retained DCF describe its 2025 distribution funding; Enbridge’s stated range is a target framework, not the same metric as EPD’s reported coverage.

Why these figures do not tell you which has the higher yield

A distribution or dividend amount is not a yield. Yield depends on the security’s market price on a specified date, and a meaningful comparison must also identify the listing and currency used. The company-reported payout amounts above do not establish a matched-date EPD-versus-ENB yield comparison. Calculate each security’s annualized cash payout divided by its price on the same date, using a consistent currency basis, before comparing yields. A higher quoted yield alone would not show which investment has stronger coverage, lower risk, or better total return.

How much visibility do their growth plans provide?

Enbridge reported that 2025 results exceeded the midpoint of its guidance for EBITDA and DCF per share. For 2026, it set adjusted EBITDA guidance of C$20.2 billion to C$20.8 billion. Guidance is management’s outlook, not a guaranteed result; delivery depends on operating performance and the company’s plans and assumptions. Enbridge 2026 shareholder letter

Enterprise’s 2025 results show substantial reported coverage and retained DCF, while its investor letter characterizes 2025 as a building year. The figures provided here do not quantify future capital requirements, debt levels, or project returns for a side-by-side funding comparison. Do not infer that retained cash or planned growth automatically translates into a higher future payout. Enterprise 2025 results Enterprise 2025 investor letter

Risks to weigh before choosing an income holding

Both investments operate energy infrastructure. Relevant risks can include operational and safety incidents, environmental obligations, regulation, capital and financing needs, interest rates, counterparties, changes in throughput or demand, and project delays or cost overruns. Enterprise’s own account of 2025 distinguishes fee-based from more economically sensitive activity; Enbridge discusses long-term contracted expansions and capital growth. Neither fee-based revenue, contracted projects, utility operations, nor a long record of annual increases makes future cash payouts certain.

For issuer-specific risk factors, consult Enterprise’s 2025 SEC filings and Enbridge’s filings and annual disclosures. Review debt, maturities, funding plans, and project commitments rather than relying on payout history alone. Past increases and management targets are not guarantees of future distributions or dividends.

A practical way to decide which fits your portfolio

  • Start with account and tax fit. Determine whether holding EPD units or Canadian Enbridge shares creates reporting, withholding, or tax consequences for your residence and account type.
  • Compare the business exposure you want. EPD offers a broad midstream network; Enbridge spans liquids pipelines, gas transmission and midstream, gas distribution and storage, and renewable power.
  • Check payout support using each issuer’s own definitions. EPD reported 2025 coverage and retained DCF; Enbridge publishes a target payout ratio range. Neither metric removes business risk.
  • Calculate yields on one date. Use each security’s price and annualized payout for the same date and state the currency and listing. Then consider total return, not yield alone.
  • Assess concentration and risk tolerance. Both are energy-infrastructure holdings, so consider how much sector, regulatory, financing, and project risk your portfolio can absorb.
