How Kioxia, Samsung, Western Digital and Chinese NAND SSDs Compare

There is no reliable winner based on the NAND maker alone. Compare a specific SSD’s NAND type, controller, firmware, cache design, capacity, cooling, endurance rating and warranty. Samsung’s 990 PRO and Western Digital’s WD_BLACK SN850X are high-end PCIe 4.0 TLC examples with similar peak specifications. Kioxia sells everything from client TLC and QLC drives to enterprise TLC products, while Chinese NAND such as YMTC’s Xtacking can be competitive when it is paired with a well-validated controller and firmware.

For gaming and ordinary desktop work, a reputable TLC PCIe 4.0 drive is the least complicated choice. QLC makes sense when you need very high capacity and mostly read-heavy workloads. A drive using Chinese NAND should be judged by its exact model, bill of materials, firmware support and warranty; the label “Chinese SSD” is not enough to predict reliability.

What actually determines an SSD’s quality?

NAND flash is the storage medium, but it is only one part of an SSD. The controller translates host commands, manages error correction and wear leveling, and decides how data moves between NAND cells. Firmware controls garbage collection, thermal behavior, bad-block replacement, cache usage and recovery after an unsafe shutdown. DRAM or host-memory-buffer (HMB) support affects mapping-table access, especially during sustained or mixed workloads. Overprovisioning reserves flash for background maintenance, and validation determines whether the entire combination behaves consistently.

That is why two drives using flash from the same fabrication line can have very different sustained-write behavior or failure rates. Conversely, a drive with unfamiliar NAND can perform well if its controller, firmware and qualification are mature. Vendor sequential figures are peak results under specified conditions, not a universal ranking of every capacity or workload.

TLC and QLC: the first decision

Triple-level cell (TLC) stores three bits in each cell. Quad-level cell (QLC) stores four. QLC increases density and lowers the cost of large capacities, but each cell has narrower voltage margins and generally tolerates fewer write cycles. Consumer QLC drives therefore rely more heavily on an SLC cache: a portion of the flash is operated temporarily as one-bit-per-cell SLC to absorb writes quickly, then folded into QLC in the background.

NAND mode What it is good at What to check
TLC Short latency, high sustained performance and a reasonably high endurance level Controller cooling, cache behavior and the drive’s TBW rating
QLC High-capacity, read-heavy storage where cost per usable terabyte matters Write speed after the SLC cache fills, workload limits and endurance

Kioxia’s 2025 technical paper summarizes the trade-off: QLC meets needs where extremely large capacities are required, while TLC remains important for short latency, high performance and reasonably high endurance. That is a workload distinction, not a claim that every TLC drive is faster than every QLC drive in every test.

Representative drives and what their specifications show

The Samsung and WD figures are manufacturer ratings. They describe the fastest advertised configuration, not necessarily every capacity, and they do not predict performance after a cache fills or when the drive is hot.

Samsung 990 PRO: a defined high-end TLC reference

The 990 PRO is a relatively easy drive to evaluate because its published architecture is specific: Samsung V-NAND TLC behind a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface. The rated ceiling is up to 7,450 MB/s sequential read and 6,900 MB/s sequential write. Those numbers place it in the high-end PCIe 4.0 class, but a compatible motherboard, current firmware, adequate cooling and a workload capable of issuing large queues are needed to approach them.

Capacity and endurance

Samsung rates the 1TB model at 600 TBW, the 2TB model at 1,200 TBW and the 4TB model at 2,400 TBW, each with a five-year limited warranty. TBW is a warranty endurance rating: it defines the amount of host writing covered by the specification, not a guaranteed point at which the flash will fail. A larger capacity often receives a proportionally higher TBW because more NAND is available for wear distribution.

Who should choose it

  • Users who want a clearly specified TLC drive for an operating-system, application or game library.
  • Workstations that frequently write large projects and benefit from TLC’s behavior after the temporary cache is exhausted.
  • Builders who value a long, explicitly published warranty and capacity-specific TBW figures.

It is still important to check the exact capacity and firmware revision. The 990 PRO name does not make thermal throttling, motherboard slot configuration or backup practices irrelevant.

WD_BLACK SN850X: similar PCIe 4.0 positioning, different limits

The WD_BLACK SN850X is specified with Western Digital/SanDisk 3D TLC NAND and PCIe Gen4 x4. Its advertised maximums are up to 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write. The family extends to 8TB, and the published endurance reaches up to 4,800 TBW for that 8TB version.

Capacity matters more than the name

An 8TB SN850X is not simply a larger 1TB drive with the same operating conditions. Flash channels, spare area, firmware limits and the amount of data written per day can change with capacity. Compare the TBW and specifications for the exact capacity you intend to buy rather than transferring the 8TB figure to a smaller model.

A branding trap to avoid

Western Digital branding covers products with different flash choices. The SN850X is specified as TLC, but a later report on the WD Blue SN5100 describes Kioxia BiCS8 QLC paired with a SanDisk controller. That example is why a product line or logo is not a substitute for reading the current specification and checking the drive’s controller and NAND. Do not assume that every drive carrying the same parent brand has the endurance or sustained-write behavior of the SN850X.

Kioxia: a portfolio, not one performance tier

Kioxia’s consumer EXCERIA products and enterprise CD-series products span TLC and QLC media, different interfaces and very different endurance targets. A single “Kioxia SSD” comparison therefore hides the most important variable: which model and capacity?

Client EXCERIA drives

Client models are aimed at notebooks and desktops, where power limits, thermal space and bursty workloads are common. Some use TLC and others use QLC. Before purchase, identify the exact EXCERIA generation, interface (for example, PCIe generation and lane width), NAND mode, rated endurance and the manufacturer’s firmware utility. A QLC EXCERIA can be sensible for a large game archive or media library that is read far more often than it is rewritten; a TLC model is the safer starting point for repeated exports, scratch data or virtual machines.

Enterprise CD-series drives

Enterprise products are specified around serviceability and write endurance rather than a consumer peak-speed headline. The CD7-V, for example, uses 96-layer BiCS TLC and is rated up to 3 drive writes per day (DWPD). DWPD expresses how many complete drive-capacity writes are covered per day under the product’s stated enterprise conditions; it should not be compared directly with a consumer TBW number without knowing the warranty period, capacity and test assumptions.

  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

Enterprise power-loss protection, telemetry and qualification can also differ from client products. A CD-series drive is not automatically the right choice for a home PC, and a consumer EXCERIA model should not be treated as an enterprise replacement.

What “Chinese NAND” tells you—and what it does not

YMTC’s Xtacking is a real NAND architecture used in client SSDs. Its presence establishes the flash supplier and design approach, not the quality of a finished retail drive. The controller may come from a different company, and firmware, DRAM or HMB configuration, overprovisioning, error-correction tuning and factory validation all affect results.

How to assess a specific YMTC-based drive

  1. Get the exact model and capacity. Avoid listings that identify only a country or a generic “Chinese NAND” label.
  2. Verify the current bill of materials. NAND packages, controller and DRAM can change between production batches under the same model name.
  3. Check firmware support. Look for a named update utility, release notes, SMART health reporting and a documented recovery path.
  4. Read the warranty terms. Confirm duration, TBW or DWPD if provided, who handles returns and whether support is available in your region.
  5. Match the workload. A drive for a secondary game library faces a different risk profile from one holding irreplaceable work or a write-heavy database.

Without those details, it is not responsible to call a generic Chinese SSD either unsafe or equivalent to a named Samsung, WD or Kioxia model. The correct conclusion is that the model-level evidence is incomplete.

Peak interface speed versus sustained work

PCIe 4.0 x4 provides the link used by both the 990 PRO and SN850X. Sequential read and write figures are useful for identifying a drive’s class, but they are burst measurements. Real workloads include small random requests, queue-depth changes, simultaneous reads and writes, and periods when the SSD is performing garbage collection.

When the SLC cache fills

Both TLC and QLC consumer drives may accept an initial burst at high speed by using an SLC cache. Once that cache is full, incoming data must be written in the native mode or share resources with folding and garbage collection. QLC designs generally show a larger gap between burst and post-cache write behavior, which is why a large, continuous transfer can take much longer than the box’s sequential headline suggests.

Thermals and slot configuration

High-end PCIe 4.0 drives can throttle when their controller reaches a protective temperature. Install the drive under the motherboard’s heatsink when the manufacturer permits it, keep the thermal pad fully seated and avoid covering the controller with an incorrectly placed pad. Also confirm that the M.2 slot is wired for the advertised lane width; a slot sharing lanes with another device may reduce throughput.

Mixed and random I/O

Operating systems, development environments and virtual machines issue many small requests rather than one long sequential stream. Firmware quality, DRAM or HMB behavior, queue handling and garbage collection can matter more than a 150 MB/s difference in peak sequential write speed. Independent tests under one common setup would be needed for a fair cross-brand ranking; manufacturer figures alone cannot provide that ranking.

Endurance, warranty and support

TBW is best used as a comparison signal within similar capacities and product classes. It is not a failure forecast. A drive can continue operating beyond its TBW rating, or fail earlier because of a controller fault, power event, manufacturing defect or another component issue. Keep at least one separate backup regardless of the number printed on the specification sheet.

For an apples-to-apples check, record these items for the exact SKU:

  • TBW or DWPD and the capacity to which it applies.
  • Warranty length, regional exclusions and the process for an advanced replacement or return.
  • Firmware-update software and whether updates preserve data.
  • SMART attributes, temperature reporting and health-status interpretation.
  • Power-loss protection, if the drive will hold transactional or enterprise data.

The five-year limited warranty published for the Samsung 990 PRO and the capacity-specific TBW figures for the WD_BLACK SN850X are useful because they are explicit. A listing that omits those details is harder to evaluate, regardless of its NAND origin.

Choosing by workload

Gaming and general desktop use

Choose a TLC PCIe 4.0 model when the price difference is reasonable and you regularly install, patch or record large games. The 990 PRO and SN850X illustrate the class: both publish roughly 7 GB/s sequential read performance and TLC flash. A QLC drive can still work well as a read-heavy game library, particularly at a high capacity, but expect greater sensitivity to long write operations after its cache fills.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Photo, video and software projects

Frequent exports, scratch files, compilation artifacts and virtual machines create more sustained writes than a typical game launch. Prefer TLC, compare the exact TBW rating and provide cooling. If the project is irreplaceable, put the working drive inside a backup plan rather than relying on endurance alone.

Large media or archive storage

QLC can be economical when most activity is reading and the capacity requirement is high. Separate the archive from an active scratch drive so that long ingest or transcoding jobs do not constantly compete with the cache and background housekeeping.

Servers and enterprise workloads

Use an enterprise product whose endurance, telemetry and power-loss behavior are specified for the service. Kioxia’s CD7-V example, with up to 3 DWPD on 96-layer BiCS TLC, belongs to that evaluation process; it should not be substituted by a consumer drive merely because the latter advertises a higher burst speed.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Write down the complete SKU. Include capacity, heatsink version and regional model code.
  2. Identify the NAND mode and generation. Record TLC or QLC and the stated flash generation where available.
  3. Confirm the controller and memory design. Note DRAM, HMB and whether the vendor documents firmware updates.
  4. Match the interface to the system. Check PCIe generation, lane width and the motherboard slot’s actual wiring.
  5. Read sustained-write information. Look for post-cache behavior, not only the maximum sequential number.
  6. Compare endurance and support. Use the exact capacity’s TBW or DWPD, warranty, SMART tools and power-loss features.
  7. Plan for heat and backups. Install the correct heatsink, monitor temperature and keep an independent copy of important data.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by company reputation

A respected flash maker can sell both TLC and QLC products, and a drive assembled with third-party parts can be excellent or poorly tuned. Compare the model-level specification instead of assuming every product from one company shares the same design.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Equating peak speed with daily speed

Peak figures are useful for classifying PCIe performance, but cache exhaustion, thermal throttling and random I/O decide many real tasks. Treat 7,450 MB/s or 7,300 MB/s as an upper specification, not a promise that every transfer will run at that rate.

Transferring an endurance figure between capacities

The 990 PRO’s 600, 1,200 and 2,400 TBW ratings apply to 1TB, 2TB and 4TB models respectively. Likewise, the SN850X’s 4,800 TBW figure is specifically associated with its 8TB version. Never apply one capacity’s TBW to another.

Ignoring firmware and monitoring

Install the vendor’s management utility before a problem occurs, check SMART health after installation and keep firmware current when the release notes address stability or compatibility. Record the original firmware version so a rollback or warranty claim has a clear baseline.

Bottom line: which should you buy?

For a high-performance desktop or gaming system, a named TLC PCIe 4.0 model such as the Samsung 990 PRO or WD_BLACK SN850X is the straightforward choice when its exact capacity, thermal solution and warranty fit your budget. Their published peak speeds are close enough that the decision should focus on capacity-specific endurance, support and actual pricing rather than a small sequential-speed difference.

Choose a Kioxia drive only after identifying the specific EXCERIA or enterprise CD-series model, because the portfolio spans TLC, QLC, interfaces and endurance classes.
