Start with the quarter’s reported profit after tax (PAT) attributable to the relevant owners. Add back excluded expenses after their related tax effects, subtract excluded income or gains after tax, and show every adjustment in a reconciliation:
Normalized PAT = reported PAT + after-tax expenses excluded − after-tax income or gains excluded.

There is no universal IFRS formula for normalized PAT. It is a management-defined non-GAAP performance measure, so the issuer’s stated policy and reconciliation determine what is included.

What normalized PAT measures
Normalized profit after tax is intended to present a company’s earnings after removing items management considers unusual, non-operational or otherwise unsuitable for evaluating the quarter’s continuing performance. The starting point is not revenue, operating profit or an analyst estimate; it is the reported quarterly PAT on the same ownership basis used in the company’s financial statements.

The adjustment is meaningful only when a reader can see what changed between reported PAT and the normalized figure. A higher normalized result does not automatically mean the business generated more cash, and a lower result does not automatically indicate deterioration. The difference reflects the company’s chosen exclusions and their tax and ownership consequences.
“Adjusted net income,” “underlying earnings,” “core earnings” and “normalized PAT” may describe similar calculations, but the labels do not guarantee identical definitions. Treat each issuer’s reconciliation as a separate policy until the excluded items, tax treatment and attribution basis have been aligned.
Quarterly calculation workflow
1. Anchor the calculation to reported PAT
Use the quarter’s IFRS or GAAP profit after tax attributable to the relevant owners. Confirm whether the published number is attributable to the parent’s ordinary shareholders, all equity holders, continuing operations only, or the consolidated group including non-controlling interests. Use the same basis for the normalized result.

List every item the company identifies as a normalization adjustment. Typical categories include acquisition or integration costs, restructuring charges, impairment, unusual fair-value movements, disposal gains or losses, and financing-related one-off items. Do not add an item merely because it is large, volatile or described informally as “one-time.”
Check the current-quarter reconciliation against prior quarters. A company that consistently removes the same type of cost should explain why it remains outside its normal earnings measure. The policy, not the size of an item, determines whether the adjustment is defensible.
3. Apply the sign correctly
- An excluded expense is added back.
- An excluded income item or gain is subtracted.
- An excluded loss is added back, while an excluded gain is subtracted.
- Favorable and unfavorable items should be treated symmetrically when the policy covers both.
Keeping gains and losses visible prevents normalization from becoming a one-way mechanism that only increases profit.

4. Calculate the related tax effect
Determine how much current and deferred tax belongs to each adjustment. AASB 18 describes several acceptable approaches: applying the statutory tax rate, allocating current and deferred tax on a reasonable pro-rata basis, or using another method that better reflects the item. The issuer should explain its method.
Tax must be shown as a separate adjustment rather than hidden inside an unexplained net figure. An expense that generated a tax benefit is not normally added back at its full pre-tax amount. Conversely, an excluded gain may carry tax expense that reduces the amount subtracted from PAT.
5. Account for non-controlling interests
If an adjustment arises in a subsidiary that is not wholly owned, part of the after-tax effect may belong to non-controlling shareholders. Show that portion separately and adjust only the amount attributable to the parent’s owners. This avoids overstating the benefit available to the reporting company’s shareholders.
6. Sum and cross-check
Add the after-tax, parent-attributable adjustments to reported PAT and compare the result with the issuer’s published normalized PAT. If the figures do not tie, investigate sign errors, tax allocation, non-controlling interests, discontinued operations, foreign-exchange treatment and the attribution basis before drawing a conclusion.
Worked quarterly example
Assume a company reports quarterly PAT attributable to its owners of $48.0 million. Its policy identifies five exclusions. The table shows the after-tax effect that reaches the parent’s normalized result.
| Item excluded | Pre-tax amount ($m) | Related tax effect ($m) | NCI share ($m) | Parent PAT adjustment ($m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Acquisition costs (expense) | 6.0 | 1.5 tax benefit | 0.0 | +4.5 |
| Restructuring (expense) | 3.0 | 0.75 tax benefit | 0.20 | +2.05 |
| Impairment (expense) | 4.0 | 0.0; not deductible | 0.50 | +3.50 |
| Fair-value gain | 2.0 | 0.5 tax expense | 0.0 | −1.5 |
| Disposal gain | 1.5 | 0.3 tax expense | 0.0 | −1.2 |
| Net normalization adjustment | +7.35 | |||
The normalized PAT is therefore $48.0 million + $7.35 million = $55.35 million. The expense add-backs are reduced for tax benefits and, where applicable, the NCI share. The gains are removed net of their tax expense.

Which items can be normalized?
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission guidance defines a non-GAAP measure by reference to amounts included or excluded relative to the most directly comparable GAAP measure. The practical question is whether the company’s policy consistently identifies an item and explains why excluding it improves the reader’s understanding without distorting performance.
| Potential item | Questions to ask | Typical treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Acquisition or integration costs | Are the costs tied to a specific transaction? Have similar costs appeared repeatedly? | Add back only when the stated policy covers them and the tax effect is calculated. |
| Restructuring charges | Is the program genuinely unusual, or is restructuring a recurring part of the business model? | Reconcile each charge and explain recurrence risk. |
| Impairment | Does the policy exclude impairments consistently? Is the loss tax-deductible? | Add back the parent’s after-tax share, not automatically the full pre-tax charge. |
| Fair-value movement | Is the movement realized or unrealized, and does the company exclude both gains and losses? | Apply the policy symmetrically; subtract excluded gains. |
| Disposal gain or loss | Is the disposed operation presented separately, and does the measure cover discontinued operations? | Remove the after-tax gain or add back the after-tax loss under the disclosed basis. |
| Foreign-exchange or financing item | Is the volatility incidental, or does it arise from ordinary operations and recur? | Do not exclude it solely because it reduces profit in the quarter. |
The SEC specifically warns that companies should not use non-GAAP measures to smooth earnings. It generally cautions against removing an expense as “non-recurring” when it is reasonably likely to recur or has occurred in the prior two years. Recurring stock compensation, acquisition spending, restructuring, impairment, foreign-exchange and fair-value items therefore require scrutiny against the issuer’s policy and historical treatment.

How tax effects change normalized PAT
Statutory-rate method
A company may apply the relevant statutory tax rate to a pre-tax adjustment. This is straightforward when the item is deductible or taxable at the ordinary rate, but it can misstate the result when the item is permanently non-deductible, subject to a different jurisdictional rate or offset by valuation allowances.
Pro-rata current and deferred tax allocation
The issuer may allocate current and deferred tax expense between the reported result and the normalization items using a reasonable pro-rata method. This can better reflect temporary differences, but the basis should be documented so readers can reproduce it.

Item-specific treatment
Some items require a tailored approach. An impairment may have no immediate tax benefit; a disposal gain may trigger tax in one jurisdiction but not another; and an acquisition charge may be deductible over a different period. If the issuer uses another method because it is more appropriate, the explanation should identify the reason and the resulting tax amount.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Non-controlling interests, discontinued operations and ownership basis
Attribution can change the answer even when the underlying operating adjustment is identical. A consolidated subsidiary may record a $10 million restructuring charge, but if outside shareholders own 30%, only the parent’s 70% share belongs in parent-attributable normalized PAT after tax. The NCI portion should remain attributed to those outside owners.
Discontinued operations create a second boundary. A normalized measure may cover continuing operations only, total consolidated PAT, or both with separate reconciliations. Use the scope stated by the issuer and do not combine a continuing-operations normalized figure with total reported PAT.
Ownership changes during the quarter, preferred dividends and different definitions of “attributable profit” can also create apparent mismatches. Confirm the denominator and ownership basis before calculating a percentage change.
When a company publishes more than one normalized view
Some issuers present several adjusted measures, such as an operational view and a broader view that also removes financing or valuation effects. Compare the measures using the same six axes.
Best Value
| Comparison axis | What to inspect |
|---|---|
| Excluded items | Which costs, gains, losses and valuation movements are removed? |
| Tax basis | Are adjustments pre-tax or after-tax, and is current and deferred tax allocated separately? |
| Non-controlling interests | Is the NCI effect shown and deducted from the parent’s adjustment? |
| Discontinued operations | Does the measure cover continuing operations, total operations or both? |
| Consistency | Are the same categories treated the same way in prior quarters? |
| Reconciliation quality | Can the result be rebuilt from reported PAT with individually identified lines? |
The narrower measure is not automatically better. A broader measure may be useful if every exclusion is relevant and consistently supported; a narrow measure may be more comparable if it removes fewer judgment-heavy items.
Can normalized PAT be compared between companies?
Only after the definitions have been aligned. IFRS does not standardize self-defined subtotals. An IFRS Foundation analysis published in 2019 found that “core earnings” were, on average, 30% higher than GAAP earnings in the companies studied, illustrating how much the label can depend on exclusions.
The New Zealand Financial Markets Authority made the limitation explicit in 2012: “Non-GAAP terms such as ‘underlying earnings’, ‘normalised profit’ and ‘adjusted earnings’ lack standard meaning.”
For a defensible comparison, place reported PAT beside normalized PAT for each company and align:
- the exact excluded categories and whether gains are removed as well as losses;
- current and deferred tax treatment;
- non-controlling-interest allocation;
- continuing versus discontinued operations;
- parent-attributable versus consolidated ownership basis;
- quarter length, currency and fiscal calendar; and
- treatment of recurring items across prior periods.
If any of these differ, present the figures as issuer-specific indicators rather than as directly comparable earnings.
Common calculation errors and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Normalized PAT is too high | A pre-tax expense was added back without its tax benefit or NCI share. | Recalculate the after-tax parent-attributable amount. |
| Normalized PAT is too low | An excluded gain was added instead of subtracted, or an excluded loss was subtracted. | Check the sign of every line and include gains symmetrically. |
| Your total does not match the filing | Different operations scope, attribution basis, tax method or omitted adjustment. | Rebuild the reconciliation from reported PAT and check discontinued operations and NCI. |
| The measure rises every quarter | Recurring charges are repeatedly labeled exceptional. | Review the prior two years and the company’s stated policy; treat recurrence as a comparability warning. |
| Two companies’ “adjusted earnings” diverge sharply | Different exclusion lists or tax and ownership treatment. | Normalize the definitions before comparing, or retain reported PAT as the primary comparison. |
A reader’s quarterly checklist
- Record reported PAT attributable to the relevant owners.
- Copy every adjustment line from the issuer’s reconciliation.
- Mark each line as an expense, loss, income or gain.
- Identify the current and deferred tax effect for each line.
- Separate any non-controlling-interest share.
- Check continuing and discontinued operations.
- Apply the signs and sum the parent-attributable after-tax amounts.
- Tie the result to the published normalized PAT.
- Compare the policy with prior quarters for recurring exclusions.
- Show reported PAT beside normalized PAT whenever presenting the result.
A transparent reconciliation is the calculation: the final normalized number is credible only when a reader can follow every adjustment from the reported quarterly result to the after-tax amount attributable to the owners.
