Browser games do not need image and audio files to have graphics and sound. In a first-person account, developer Kisnner Obando describes a collection of more than 500 local-multiplayer games whose visuals are drawn in the browser and whose sound and music are synthesized with the Web Audio API. The games are delivered as static files, with no game backend required for the described setup. The collection size and implementation details are the author’s report, not an independently audited count or compatibility test.
What “zero assets” and “static site” mean here
“Zero image/audio assets” means the described games do not depend on supplied image and audio files for their art and sound. Instead, JavaScript and browser APIs create those elements at runtime. It does not mean the games contain no content: visual designs and sound behavior still have to be specified, in this case through code.

“Static” describes how the site is delivered, not what happens after a player opens it. Obando says the collection can be served as plain files, with GitHub Pages given as an example. The browser still runs JavaScript for game logic, drawing, and audio. A backend is therefore not inherently necessary for games whose needed logic and state live on the client; features that require shared online state or other network services would be a separate matter.

Describe the visual, then draw it
The article says the games use Canvas and CSS to draw sprites rather than load sprite-image files. In this approach, source code supplies the instructions for a shape, pattern, or other visual, and the browser renders it when the game runs. That shifts work from preparing and loading media files to writing and executing drawing code.

Canvas is one browser option for drawing 2D graphics. MDN’s web-game overview also covers WebGL for graphics and the Web Audio API for JavaScript-controlled sound: MDN’s introduction to web game development. These are implementation options, not evidence that one performs better for this particular collection.
A separate browser-games implementation document illustrates a data-driven variation: sprites represented by small arrays and rendered with Canvas. It is a useful example of how visual information can live in code, but it is a different project and should not be mistaken for a verified description of Obando’s internal data structures: the separate implementation document.

How the browser generates sound
Build sound from audio nodes
Obando reports synthesizing sound and music with the Web Audio API rather than shipping audio files. The W3C specification describes Web Audio as a system for audio processing and synthesis built around connected audio nodes. A game can configure and connect nodes—such as oscillators, noise sources, and filters—to create or shape sound in response to play.
The key distinction is that the browser is producing audio from instructions, not simply playing a prerecorded track. The specification also describes the API’s use alongside Canvas 2D and WebGL in games: W3C Web Audio API specification. The standard explains what the platform can do; it does not independently verify this collection’s audio design or behavior on particular devices.

What the reported scale does—and does not—show
The source article describes more than 500 games, and also reports 39 games with real 3D and 261 procedurally generated arenas. Those figures are the author’s claims; the available account does not provide an independent count or methodology for them. The central engineering point is that the author presents code-generated art and audio as an approach used across a large collection, not as proof that every browser game can eliminate media assets.
Nor do the reported counts establish a performance advantage. The available information does not quantify download savings, rendering cost, memory use, audio latency, or visual and sound quality compared with files. Generated content still requires code to run, and the right trade-off depends on the game and its requirements.
