Check that it came from an official source, verify the app and developer, review Google Play Protect’s result, and treat any warning or identity mismatch as a reason to stop. A valid APK signature can help confirm update continuity, but it does not prove the app is harmless.
How to check an APK before installing it
- Check the source. Prefer Google Play or the developer’s official download page, reached independently. Be cautious of links in unsolicited texts, emails, pop-ups, or calls. Scammers may pose as bank-fraud agents, technical support, or delivery services; contact the organization using a phone number or website you already know is official. Google’s guidance on installs from unverified developers explains the risks of these requests.
- Verify the app and developer. Compare the app name, publisher, package identity if shown, and version with information on the developer’s official site. A familiar icon or copied name is not enough. Google’s developer-verification feature checks who a developer is in supported rollout locations; it does not review the app’s content. Check Android’s developer-verification guidance for current availability and details.
- Check it with Google Play Protect. Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and scans devices for potentially harmful apps from other sources. It can warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps. For an unfamiliar app, it may ask to send app details to Google for evaluation. A clean result is useful, but it is not proof that an app is safe. - Understand the install permission. On Android 8.0 and later, you grant permission to a particular source—such as a browser or file manager—to install unknown apps. Older Android versions use an “Unknown sources” setting. This lets that source install apps; it does not certify an APK. Android describes the mechanism in its alternative distribution guidance.
- Stop if anything does not match. Do not bypass an Android or Play Protect warning just to complete installation. Leave the APK uninstalled or remove it, and verify any request through an official contact method you find independently.
Can Google Play Protect scan APKs downloaded outside Google Play?
Yes. Google says Play Protect checks apps from other sources as well as apps from Google Play. It may flag, disable, or remove an app it identifies as harmful, and may request app details for evaluation. A scan is one safety signal, not a guarantee: it cannot establish that every app it does not flag is benign. Keep Play Protect enabled and take its warnings seriously.

What does an APK signature verify?
Android requires installable APKs to be cryptographically signed. The signature lets Android check that an update matches the installed app and was signed by the same key holder. It supports app identity and update continuity, not a judgment that the code is trustworthy. If you compare a certificate fingerprint, get the expected value from the developer through a separate, verified channel. Google explains signing and app bundles in its Android App Bundle FAQ.

How to compare two APK copies
When deciding between copies, compare the source, developer, app or package identity, version, signing certificate or expected fingerprint, and Play Protect result. Also consider whether the access the app requests fits its stated purpose. No single check is conclusive; a mismatch in identity, signature, source, or security warning calls for independent verification before installation.

What Android developer verification does—and does not—mean
Google’s consumer-facing Android Help page describes an initial rollout beginning in September 2026 on certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, covering named participating app stores; it says a global rollout across install sources is planned for 2027. The Android Developers guide specifies September 30, 2026, and names Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand for the initial phase. Because the official pages differ on the country description, consult Android Help and the Android Developers guide for current availability in your region. Verification is about developer identity, not app-content review. Google’s Android Developer Console Help puts the distinction plainly: “we will be confirming who the developer is, not reviewing the content of the app or where it came from.”
