Use a URL you control as the link for a funnel’s next step, then redirect it to the current destination. That gives you a place to update and inspect the route without changing every link that points to it. It does not, by itself, improve conversion or guarantee accurate attribution: redirects can also strip query parameters that analytics relies on.
What a controlled redirect does
A redirect sends visitors from one URL to another. Instead of linking every email, ad, or page directly to a changing destination, you can link to a URL you manage and set that URL to forward visitors to the active funnel step. Google Search Central describes redirects as a way to resolve an existing URL to a different one, and notes that setup may use server configuration, server-side scripts, or a platform’s built-in redirect tools (Google Search Central’s redirect guidance).

The practical benefit is routing control: if the destination changes, you can update the redirect rather than replace each link already in circulation. It also gives you a defined route to inspect when testing where a funnel link leads. Whether that is useful depends on who can update the redirect and whether the resulting URL works with your analytics setup.
Choose redirect behavior for the route
Decide whether the change is intended to last or is temporary. Google Search Central recommends permanent server-side redirects for permanent URL moves when possible; HTTP 301 and 308 indicate a permanent move. Temporary server-side redirects are appropriate for temporary rerouting. That guidance is written for URL moves and Google Search, so it should not be treated as a universal rule for every marketing funnel.
| Route intent | Redirect approach | Relevant qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent URL move | Permanent server-side redirect; 301 or 308 indicates a permanent move. | Google recommends server-side redirects for permanent moves when possible. This is search guidance, not a funnel-performance finding. |
| Temporary rerouting | Temporary server-side redirect. | Google’s guidance distinguishes temporary from permanent URL moves; choose based on the actual duration and purpose of the route. |
Set the route at the server or in the platform that manages the controlled URL. Keep a record of its intended destination and check it after changes; an editable redirect is only useful if the responsible person can find and maintain it.
Keep analytics parameters intact
A redirect can interfere with measurement if it drops query parameters. For Google Analytics cross-domain measurement, the linker parameter _gl needs to reach the destination. Google warns that it may disappear when a destination redirects or does not accept arbitrary query parameters. Inspect the final landing URL, not just the first URL in the chain, and confirm that the parameters your analytics configuration requires survive every hop (Google Analytics: Set up cross-domain measurement).
- Open the funnel link as a test visitor and follow it through to the final landing page.
- Inspect the final URL for the expected campaign parameters and, when using cross-domain measurement,
_gl. - If a parameter is missing, inspect the redirects and the destination’s handling of query parameters. Google recommends checking network requests when troubleshooting cross-domain measurement.
- After correcting the route, make another test visit and check the Analytics result.
Google states that, when consent is present, Analytics uses first-party cookies for user and session IDs. That statement should not be generalized to visits where consent is absent or to other measurement behavior.

Verify campaign attribution instead of assuming it
A branded or convenient URL does not automatically preserve campaign information. Analytics traffic-source dimensions describe where traffic originates and the associated marketing effort; that information must still be available to Analytics after the visitor follows the redirect. Google explains these dimensions in its documentation on traffic-source dimension scopes and campaigns and traffic sources.
For a real campaign test, use the same kind of link and redirect path your audience will use, then confirm that the intended source and campaign appear in Analytics. A successful page load only proves that the destination was reached; it does not prove that attribution data arrived as intended.
When a redirect you control is worthwhile
- Useful: the destination may change, and you want to update one managed route rather than all the links pointing to it.
- Useful with testing: you need a route whose destination and redirect chain can be inspected, and you can verify the relevant parameters at the final page.
- Not a performance guarantee: the official documentation cited here does not quantify a conversion lift or attribution improvement from redirect ownership.
- Potentially risky: the redirect or destination removes query parameters that your campaign or cross-domain measurement setup needs.
A platform redirect feature may be enough if it lets the right person update the destination and preserves the required parameters. A branded redirect or link-management service is another possible tool when centralized destination management is needed; whichever option you use, test the full route rather than assuming it preserves analytics data.
