The agent could answer a support message, but every conversation started from a blank context window. It forgot details customers had already shared—such as the architecture of a self-hosted runner—and asked questions it should have been able to answer. In a September 29, 2026 DEV Community account, engineer Bahar Fatima describes adding Hindsight for longer-term customer context while keeping a short, verbatim window for recent turns. Why the agent kept forgetting customer details
The initial design stored raw transcripts and included only the last N messages in the prompt. That works for the immediate exchange, but a useful fact can fall outside the recent window. Fatima’s example is a customer’s self-hosted ARM runner setup: the agent could lose that detail even while handling the same customer’s later support conversation.

A second attempt retrieved similar transcript chunks. In Fatima’s account, it could find passages mentioning builds without finding the passage that actually named the runner architecture. Similarity retrieval also did not solve the problem of changing facts: a customer’s plan, for example, may change after an upgrade, and a similar older statement is not necessarily the current one.

What the Hindsight design changes
Instead of treating memory only as a window over recent messages or a search index over transcript fragments, the implementation sends complete customer-agent exchanges to Hindsight with a timestamp and a support-conversation context label. Retaining the agent’s reply matters too: it may contain a commitment or workaround that could be relevant when the ticket is handled later.

Hindsight’s documentation describes three core operations: retain, recall, and reflect. The project says retain uses an LLM to extract facts, temporal data, entities, and relationships, then normalizes them for retrieval. It describes recall as combining semantic, keyword, graph, and temporal retrieval, followed by merging and reranking results. These are descriptions of the project’s design, not independent evidence of retrieval accuracy. See the Hindsight project documentation.
Fatima summarizes her implementation lesson as: “Memory quality is decided at write time.” Here, that means the system does more than save a transcript and hope the right passage is retrieved later: it submits a complete, contextualized exchange for extraction and stores temporal information with it.

How a message moves through the agent
The example separates the work into three modules: agent/memory.py wraps the Hindsight client, agent/agent.py assembles the prompt and calls the language model, and agent/main.py provides a REPL for trying the behavior. In production, the same support-agent class sits behind a ticket webhook. Hindsight runs as a separate service; the account describes Docker for local use and a PostgreSQL-backed production deployment.

- Assemble the prompt. It combines recalled context with the current message and a short, verbatim window of recent turns.
- Generate a reply. The language model responds using that prompt.
- Retain the exchange. A background thread pool submits the customer-and-agent exchange with a timestamp and support-conversation context label.
Why recent context still needs its own window
Asynchronous retention creates a timing gap. Fatima reports that a recall for the next customer message could run before processing of the previous exchange had finished. In the reported test, that meant the agent forgot a runner architecture mentioned just one turn earlier.

The fix was not to block the reply on a synchronous memory write. The agent also keeps recent turns verbatim in-process and puts them directly in the prompt. The division is deliberate: the short window handles “what did they just say,” while Hindsight supplies longer-term customer context. That recent window can cover the write-processing lag, but it is not a guarantee that every older detail will be available.
How the implementation handles failures and outdated facts
When retention or recall fails
In Fatima’s implementation, a failed retention is logged rather than raised, so a write problem does not fail the customer conversation. A recall failure degrades to answering without retrieved memory. The account also describes a character budget for recalled text: when it is reached, lower-ranked results are cut off.

When a remembered fact is stale
A timestamp provides temporal context, but Fatima says the implementation does not build a separate supersession system. Its system prompt tells the model to trust the customer’s present statement when it conflicts with remembered information, and to acknowledge the change. Memory is useful evidence, not ground truth; a persistent store does not ensure a fact remains accurate.
How customer boundaries are represented
The example assigns each customer a separate bank identifier, such as customer-acme-42. Fatima prefers this boundary to relying on a metadata filter that every query must remember to apply. The Hindsight repository describes banks as strictly isolated, but that is a project-documented property; the account does not report an independent security audit or cross-bank access test. A tenant boundary should be treated as an explicit design decision, not assumed from the presence of a memory feature.

Using reflect to brief a human support engineer
The example’s --briefing option calls reflect with the question, “What should a support engineer know about this customer before replying?” Fatima intends the result to help a human taking over a ticket get a synthesized briefing. The project documentation describes reflect as a deeper analysis operation over memories; its output should still be checked against current customer statements.
What the reported tests establish
Fatima reports a screenshot of six passing pytest tests covering bank isolation, retention scoping, the recent-turn window, recall failure handling, and the character budget. The account says a slower end-to-end pass against a running Hindsight service is separate. These are reported results for this implementation, not an independently reproduced run, a benchmark, or a general reliability statistic.

- Use a recent-turn window when the agent must reliably see the current exchange, including while background writes are still processing.
- Use long-term memory when support depends on customer facts that may be older than the prompt window.
- Retain complete, timestamped exchanges when both customer facts and the agent’s prior commitments or workarounds may matter later.
- Define customer boundaries explicitly and decide how failed reads and writes should affect the conversation.
- Let current corrections win. A remembered detail can be stale, even when it was retrieved successfully.
