A normal test points you toward the HDMI connection or DISH receiver; a faulty test points toward the TV. Then check the selected input, cable, receiver, and—if DISH reports signal loss—the satellite path.
Identify what is actually failing
Notice whether the screen goes black, freezes on one frame, breaks into blocks, or displays a “No Signal” message. Also check whether the Samsung TV’s menus remain visible. If the menus appear but DISH video does not, the TV can display an image, but that alone does not identify whether the cable, receiver, or incoming signal is at fault.

Samsung’s guidance is that if the TV displays a picture in another setup, the TV is not the cause of the issue. Use its built-in Picture Test to make that distinction before replacing equipment.
Run Samsung’s Picture Test
On many Samsung TVs from 2022 onward, the path is All Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. Older models may use Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. Follow the prompts on screen; menu names and test availability vary by model and software.

- The test image also looks wrong: Contact Samsung support. The issue may be with the TV’s picture or display path.
- The test image looks normal: Continue with the HDMI input, cable, and DISH receiver checks. A normal test does not prove which external component is responsible.
Some models also offer HDMI diagnostics. If available, run the TV’s cable test as directed. Samsung notes that certain HDMI tests are model- and software-dependent and are designed for cables under 2 m.
Check the TV input and HDMI connection
- Make sure the DISH receiver is powered on.
- Use the Samsung remote’s source or input controls to select the HDMI port connected to the receiver.
- Check that the cable runs from the receiver’s HDMI OUT to a TV HDMI IN port.
- Unplug and firmly reseat the HDMI cable at both ends. If the problem continues, try another TV HDMI port or a known-good cable, changing one thing at a time.
A cable replacement is worth trying when reseating, the TV’s HDMI test, or a cable swap implicates the connection. Samsung specifies a certified HDMI 2.1 cable for 4K at 120 Hz, but that is not a universal requirement for every DISH receiver and TV setup. A cable swap will not fix satellite signal loss, a receiver fault, or an internal TV problem.

Check whether the DISH receiver is frozen
If the picture is frozen rather than showing a signal-loss message, use the receiver controls to check whether it is responding:

- Press SAT, then Guide on the DISH remote. If the guide appears, the receiver can display its guide; continue checking the program or video path.
- If the guide does not appear, try changing channels with the receiver’s front-panel channel buttons.
- If those buttons do not change the channel, unplug the receiver’s power cord for 10 seconds, then reconnect it. DISH’s frozen-screen guidance says this reset may take up to five minutes.
DISH’s signal-loss guidance gives a reset time of up to 10 minutes for that symptom. Reset timing can differ by issue and receiver, so follow the instructions for your specific model.

When DISH reports signal loss
A satellite signal problem is separate from the HDMI path between the receiver and TV. DISH says signal loss is usually the result of severe weather; during an active storm, reception may return when conditions improve.

- Check that the coaxial cable between the receiver and wall outlet is connected securely.
- From a safe location, check whether snow or nearby debris is obstructing the dish’s view, and remove only what you can reach safely.
- If the dish appears to have moved or is damaged, arrange professional service. Do not climb a ladder or go onto the roof to inspect or adjust it.
Choose the right support path
- Contact Samsung if the Picture Test shows a picture fault or the TV also fails to display pictures from its own menus or other sources.
- Contact DISH if the TV test is normal but receiver, input, cable, and safe signal checks do not restore service, or if the dish may have moved or been damaged.
