To add someone to YouTube Premium, the family manager must invite them through the membership’s family-sharing settings. The invitee accepts the email or text invitation using their own Google Account. This works with a YouTube family plan—not an individual membership—and both people must meet YouTube’s household, account, and regional requirements.
Invite someone from the YouTube app on Android
- Sign in to the Google Account that manages the YouTube paid membership.
- Tap your profile picture, then Purchases and memberships.
- Tap the membership you want to manage.
- Beside Family sharing settings, tap Edit, then Invite a new member.
- Enter the person’s email address or phone number and tap Send.
- Ask the person to open the email or text invitation and follow its instructions to join the family group.
These menu names follow YouTube’s Android family-plan instructions; wording may vary slightly by platform or locale.

Invite someone from a computer
- Sign in to the Google Account associated with the paid membership.
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Select Manage membership.
- Click Edit beside Family sharing settings.
- Choose Invite family member, enter the person’s email address or phone number, and send the invitation.
- The invited person must follow the instructions in the email or text to join.
Who can join a YouTube Premium family plan?
The family manager sends and manages invitations. A family plan can include the manager and up to five additional members, each using their own Google Account. Members keep separate libraries, subscriptions, recommendations, and watch histories. YouTube’s family-plan requirements set these conditions:
- Same household: The manager and members must live at the same residential address. YouTube says an electronic check-in confirms this requirement every 30 days.
- One family group at a time: A person cannot already belong to another family group, and must not have switched family groups within the previous 12 months.
- Eligible account: Google Workspace accounts cannot start or join this family plan; use a regular Google Account.
- Supported region: The manager and invitee must be in a country or region where the relevant YouTube plan is available.
If the invitation or setup fails
Check the eligibility rules before sending another invitation. An invitee who is already in a different family group or switched groups within the previous 12 months may be unable to join. If YouTube reports a location or country mismatch, its Android troubleshooting guidance notes that a difference between the Google Pay country or region and the person’s current location can cause an error. Do not change or misrepresent location details to get around regional eligibility.

Existing memberships can also affect joining. Google’s family-group help says that an individual-plan member who wants to join a family plan must cancel the individual membership first. An annual-plan member must wait for the annual plan to expire before upgrading. Check the current instructions for the specific plan before making changes.

YouTube also has a separate Two-person plan for one additional household member. It is not the same as a family plan. The official Two-person plan help page gives inconsistent country-availability lists, so check whether the option is offered in your region rather than relying on a general list.
