What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Humanoid robots can detect people or intrusions, assess whether they are getting too close, and respond by slowing down, stopping, or changing course. In some industrial collaborative-robot systems, designers also limit force or power to reduce the consequences of contact. Those are safety approaches, not proof that every humanoid has them or that contact is harmless: available humanoid-specific disclosure names capabilities but does not provide a complete sensor specification or independently validated performance figures.
How do humanoid robots detect people?
Detection is the first step in a safety chain. A robot must perceive a person or an intrusion into an area where it may move, then use that information to control its motion. A humanoid manufacturer lists multimodal perception, sensor fusion, proximity detection, and human detection, but says its full sensor specification is forthcoming (manufacturer capability page). That disclosure does not identify a complete sensor package or establish a detection range or reliability figure.

Industrial protective systems can use sensors to monitor defined detection zones (SICK safety laser scanners). This is an example of an industrial safety approach, not evidence that a particular humanoid uses laser scanners or that a scanner is compatible with it. Without model-specific technical documentation, it is not possible to say whether a humanoid uses cameras, lidar, radar, depth sensors, or some combination.
How do robots avoid colliding with people?
In industrial collaborative robotics, speed and separation monitoring is one way to manage risk: the system maintains a minimum distance between a person and hazardous robot parts. If the separation becomes too small, it can reduce speed, stop, or choose another path that preserves distance. The ISO explanation describes this approach and power-and-force limiting as collaborative safety methods (ISO, “Robots and humans can work together safely”).

The safety function may be built into the robot, provided by a protective device, or split between them. That means detection alone is not enough; the system must also take an appropriate protective action. A robot’s path, tool, surroundings, and the people working nearby all affect the risk. ISO’s 2025 ISO 10218-2 preview emphasizes that the complete application—not the robot by itself—is what can be assessed as collaborative (ISO 10218-2 preview).
Slowing, stopping, or changing path
These responses serve the same broad goal—preserving separation—but are not interchangeable in every situation. Slowing may maintain distance while work continues; stopping can prevent further approach; an alternate path may allow movement without closing the gap. Which response is suitable depends on the application and its hazards, rather than on a detection feature alone.

Limiting force if contact occurs
Industrial collaborative guidance also includes power and force limiting. Industrial cobot design approaches can include force feedback, low-inertia motors, elastic actuators, and collision detection, as described by Omron (Omron collaborative robots). These examples do not show that a given humanoid uses those features, nor that any contact is safe. Collision forces in a robot application can be assessed with an ISO/TS 15066-compliant measurement device, according to AIRSKIN (AIRSKIN force measurement).

What sensors do humanoid robots use?
There is no single sensor package established for humanoids as a class by the available manufacturer disclosure. The cited manufacturer page identifies multimodal perception, sensor fusion, proximity detection, and human detection, while leaving its complete sensor specification unpublished (manufacturer capability page). Specific sensor types, detection zones, operating conditions, and performance should therefore be checked in the technical documentation for the exact robot model and configuration.

Are humanoid robots safe around people?
A listed people-detection capability is not, by itself, evidence that a robot is safe in every setting. Safety depends on what the robot can reach, its speed and motion, any tools it carries, the environment, how people approach it, and what protective action follows detection. A claim about a feature is also different from a technical specification or an independent assessment of a complete operating application.
Industrial standards can clarify safety concepts, but their scope matters. ISO/TS 15066 supplements ISO 10218-1 and ISO 10218-2 for collaborative industrial robot systems and their work environments; it explicitly does not apply to non-industrial robots, although its principles may be useful elsewhere (ISO/TS 15066). The retrieved ISO 10218-1:2025 preview excludes service robots accessible to the public and consumer products (ISO 10218-1 preview). Neither source supports describing a general-purpose humanoid as certified under those standards. The 2025 ISO 10218 materials are previews; applicable published editions and national adoption should be checked before making a compliance claim.

How to evaluate a humanoid’s collision-avoidance claims
When comparing a robot or reviewing a safety claim, look for evidence about the complete application rather than relying on a feature list.
- Detection: What device or method detects people, and which areas or zones does it cover?
- Response: Does the robot slow, stop, or plan an alternate route when separation closes?
- Contact limitation: Are force, speed, or torque limited, and how are collision forces assessed?
- Validation context: Which robot application, tools, environment, and people were included in the risk assessment?
- Evidence quality: Is the feature only listed by a vendor, documented in a technical specification, or independently assessed?
The available humanoid-specific material does not establish a model-specific detection range, failure rate, or independently validated performance figure. Those claims require documentation for the particular robot and operating setup.
