To share a keyboard, mouse, or other USB peripherals between two computers, connect both computers to a KVM switch, plug the shared devices into its peripheral ports, then select which computer is active. A full KVM also switches the monitor’s video; a USB-only sharing switch does not, so you must change the monitor input separately. If your monitor has a built-in KVM, it may handle both jobs without a separate switch. Check the exact ports and supported features on your equipment before wiring it.
What a KVM switch does
KVM stands for keyboard, video, and mouse. A KVM switch lets multiple computers share a set of peripherals; a full video-and-USB KVM also routes the display signal to the selected computer. A USB-only switch moves USB devices between computers but leaves video switching to the monitor or another device.

Some monitors include a KVM feature. On a supported model, you connect each computer’s video input and USB upstream link to the monitor, then attach the shared keyboard and mouse to its USB downstream ports. The monitor’s menu or manufacturer utility handles the assignment and selection. Dell describes this arrangement for its supported monitors in its KVM setup guide.
Choose the right way to share your devices
| Approach | What it switches | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monitor-integrated KVM | USB peripherals and, depending on the model, the monitor input | A monitor that already has KVM support, compatible inputs, and enough downstream USB ports | Upstream port count and type, input-to-USB assignments, supported peripherals, and switching controls |
| External video-and-USB KVM | Video and USB peripherals | A monitor without KVM, or a setup whose built-in ports do not fit | Host and display connectors, number of computers, USB port count, resolution, refresh rate, and power needs |
| USB-only sharing switch | USB peripherals only | A setup where you are willing to select the monitor input separately | USB data and power support for your devices, plus how you will switch video |
For an example of an external unit, Eaton lists its B005-DPUA4 DisplayPort/USB KVM with USB hub ports and support for up to 4K at 60 Hz. Those are specifications for that particular model, not a general limit or guarantee for other KVMs; see Eaton’s product page.

(NOTE: This USB Switcher is NOT a KVM switch and does not support connecting a monitor or video transmission)
- Connect USB C & USB A Devices: The USB 3.0 switch provides 1 USB C port and 3 USB A ports to support connecting various USB devices, extending more ports for two computers. (*It is recommended to power supply when using multiple devices simultaneously to avoid disconnection due to insufficient power.*)
- 5Gbps Data Transfer / Plug & Play: With 4 USB 3.0 ports, the USB 3.0 switcher supports data transfer up to 5Gbps and is backward compatible with USB 2.0; Simple plug and play for any modern operating system: Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, and Linux computers. (*The USB ports are primarily for data transfer and are not recommended for charging devices.*)
- Note: 1. If your input device uses a USB-C port, please purchase a USB-C to USB adapter before use. 2. When using a camera through the switcher, if your computer has a built-in camera, please select the UGREEN camera in the camera settings to ensure proper use. 3.The USB-C port on the product does not support video output and cannot be used with a dock to connect a display
- USB-C Power Supply: The USB switch is designed with a optional power supply for high-power devices like Hard Disk Drives, headsets, and other USB devices to work more stably; The upgraded USB-C Power port avoids the trouble of not finding a micro cable.
Connect a monitor with a built-in KVM
- Confirm KVM support. Check the monitor’s manual or specifications for KVM support, the number and type of upstream ports, and the downstream USB ports available for peripherals.
- Connect each computer’s video. Use a supported HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C video input. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that the port supports video.
- Connect each computer’s USB upstream link. The video cable may not carry the USB connection needed for peripherals plugged into the monitor. Use the appropriate upstream connection so the computer can recognize them.
- Plug in the shared USB devices. Connect the keyboard, mouse, and any other supported peripherals to the monitor’s USB downstream ports.
- Assign and select the computer. In the monitor’s on-screen menu or manufacturer utility, associate each video input with the correct USB upstream connection, then select the computer you want to use. Menu names and switching behavior vary by model.
Connect an external KVM switch
- Check the switch manual for the exact host, display, and peripheral port labels, and confirm the switch supports your computers’ video connectors and monitor requirements.
- Connect each computer to the matching host inputs on the KVM. A full KVM needs both the computer’s video link and USB host link; a USB-only switch needs the USB link.
- Connect the monitor to the KVM’s display or console output, and plug the shared USB devices into its peripheral ports.
- Select a computer using the switch’s supported control, such as a physical button, hotkey, or remote. For example, Eaton documents those three selection methods for its B005-DPUA4.
Check USB-C, display, and peripheral compatibility
USB-C may carry data, video, or both
USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed set of capabilities. ASUS’s Auto KVM FAQ, updated February 12, 2026, says that on the monitor setup it describes, upstream port 1 supports video through DisplayPort Alt Mode, while upstream port 2 is data-only and must be paired with HDMI, DisplayPort, or another specified video input. Check both the computer and monitor specifications, and confirm how the monitor maps its video inputs to USB upstream ports.
Resolution and refresh rate depend on the model
Compare the switch’s stated resolution and refresh-rate support with what both computers and the display need. A “4K” label alone does not tell you the supported refresh rate. Eaton lists up to 4K at 60 Hz for the B005-DPUA4; other models may have different limits. Check the exact model’s specification sheet before connecting it.

Special USB devices may not work as expected
Peripheral compatibility is model-specific. Dell says wireless keyboard and mouse receivers can be plugged into supported downstream ports on its covered monitors, but its guidance does not support Bluetooth keyboards and mice or webcam sharing through the monitor’s downstream USB port. Do not apply those limits to every KVM: verify support for webcams, audio devices, storage, specialty keyboards, and any other device you plan to share.

Troubleshoot a KVM setup
- The picture switches, but the keyboard or mouse does not: Check that the computer’s USB upstream cable is connected, then verify the monitor’s USB/KVM input assignment.
- USB devices work, but the display does not: Check the video cable and selected display input separately. If using USB-C for video, confirm that the port supports video on both the computer and monitor.
- A webcam or unusual USB device is missing: Check the exact KVM’s peripheral support and whether the device needs more power or a different connection.
- Resolution or refresh rate is lower than expected: Compare the KVM’s stated video capability with the requirements of both computers and the monitor; do not assume all switches support the same modes.
- You need an extra cable: Check the monitor’s included accessories and documentation. Dell says compatible upstream cables are supplied with its supported KVM monitors, but that does not establish what comes with other brands or models.
