HomeKit Secure Video adds encrypted event recording to a compatible camera in Apple Home. A live feed and a Secure Video recording are separate capabilities: the home hub analyzes camera footage on-device, encrypts qualifying clips, and uploads them to iCloud. An iCloud+ subscription and a configured home hub are required; recorded clips are available for the last 10 days and do not count against the iCloud storage quota, according to Apple.
What HomeKit Secure Video does
HomeKit Secure Video is Apple Home’s camera-recording feature. A camera that works with Apple Home may let you view a live stream in the Home app, but that alone does not mean it supports Secure Video recording. Check the camera’s specifications for explicit HomeKit Secure Video support.

With a supported camera, iCloud+ and a home hub, the system can analyze footage for events and save qualifying clips. Apple describes the footage as end-to-end encrypted. The hub is not just an optional convenience for this recording workflow: it performs the documented local analysis and supports remote access.
How live viewing and recorded clips travel
Live streams
Apple’s Platform Security documentation describes two routes for live video. When your viewing device is on the same local network as the camera, the camera sends video and audio directly to that device. When you are away from home, the encrypted stream is relayed through the home hub. Apple says the hub does not decrypt that live stream.

It features two night vision modes: Spotlight Color Night Vision and IR Detection Mode. The spotlight provides illumination in dark, great for color recording outdoors at night. The G100 also includes 940 nm infrared lighting, ensuring covert illumination without alerting potential intruders. (Note: Both Spotlight and IR night vision modes must be manually enabled in the app and do not turn on automatically.)
- Indoor/Outdoor Ready IP65 Protection: With durable, weather-resistant IP65-rated housing, the G100 surveillance camera is both an indoor camera and outdoor security camera, offering reliable home surveillance for flexible indoor or outdoor mounting. Withstands rain, dust, and rugged environments.
- Local and Cloud AI Detection: The G100 surveillance cameras supports local motion and person detection, and the HomeGuardian Plan unlocks cloud-based recognition for pets, vehicles, packages, and faces, with AI event tagging. Integrated Events automatically can be triggered when paired with other Aqara devices (subscription required). It also supports Lens Obstruction Detection, custom audio files, and 2-way audio (Notes: Only in Aqara Home App).
- HomeKit Support & Wide Compatibility: The Aqara G100 Camera provides full support for HomeKit Secure Video (Note:Requires an active iCloud subscription and an Apple Home hub. HomeKit limits resolution to 1080p. When connected to both Apple and Aqara Home, the G100’s resolution in Aqara Home will also be limited to 1080p, but will return to 1296p if HomeKit is disconnected.) The G100 has some of the best third-party ecosystem support on the market, it can stream to Google, Alexa compatible smart displays, and even Home Assistant via the RTSP protocol, making it easier to interact with visitors or check in on loved ones.
- Flexible Storage Methods: Record 24/7 with a microSD (up to 512GB, not included) or NAS. Time-lapse mode compresses 24-hours of footage to 15-second clips (wired connection and microSD card required). Automatically store detected events with end-to-end encryption in the cloud with a HomeGuardian subscription, ensuring protection against data theft and guaranteeing your privacy at home.
Recorded events
Recording follows a different path. According to Apple’s Platform Security description, the home hub receives camera clips over an encrypted local connection and analyzes the video locally for significant events. It encrypts qualifying clips and their poster frames before uploading them to iCloud. Clip metadata and encryption keys are also protected with iCloud end-to-end encryption.
This is Apple’s documented system architecture, not a claim based on independent security testing. Apple’s user-facing guide summarizes it by saying footage is analyzed privately by the home hub and that recordings are end-to-end encrypted.

iCloud+ plans, camera limits, and retention
Apple’s current published rules tie the number of Secure Video cameras to the iCloud+ plan. The listed camera allowance is separate from the storage quota: Apple says saved clips do not count against that quota.
| iCloud+ plan | HomeKit Secure Video camera allowance |
|---|---|
| 50 GB | 1 camera |
| 200 GB | Up to 5 cameras |
| 2 TB and above | Unlimited cameras |
Apple says users can review the last 10 days of activity in Home. These allowances and retention details reflect Apple’s published guide retrieved on October 4, 2026; plan terms can change. You, or someone in your Family Sharing group, must have iCloud+.

What you need to set it up
- A camera that explicitly supports HomeKit Secure Video, not merely Apple Home live viewing.
- An iCloud+ subscription held by you or a member of your Family Sharing group.
- A configured home hub.
- An iPhone or iPad to add the security camera to Home. Apple says footage can be viewed on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV.
- The same Apple Account with Home enabled on devices used for viewing and sharing.
Apple’s setup instructions describe adding a security camera through the Home app on iPhone or iPad. Check the current Apple setup guide and the camera maker’s compatibility details when configuring a particular model; software requirements and supported products can change.
Recording, alerts, and activity zones
Home lets owners choose whether a Secure Video camera streams and records when people are home or away. Depending on camera and feature support, notifications can identify motion from people, animals, vehicles, or delivered packages. Activity Zones let you select parts of the image to focus detection on.

Apple notes that Activity Zones apply to cameras set to record a specific type of motion; they do not change motion-detection automations. This distinction matters if you have separate Home automations triggered by camera motion: narrowing the recording zone does not necessarily narrow those automation triggers.

Home owners can invite other iCloud users and control whether invitees can view recordings, stream remotely, or manage cameras. What Apple’s privacy statement means
Apple Support describes the service this way: “It’s all end-to-end encrypted, and none of the video counts towards your iCloud storage.” Its technical account explains the roles behind that statement: video is analyzed on the home hub, qualifying clips are encrypted before upload, and the clip metadata and keys receive end-to-end protection. Apple says the design is intended to let users record, analyze, and view clips without exposing video content to Apple or third parties.
That explains Apple’s stated design, but it should not be mistaken for an independent audit or guarantee about every aspect of a user’s home security. Secure Video also depends on configuring the home hub, Apple Account, camera, sharing permissions, and networked devices appropriately.
Choosing a compatible camera
Apple’s camera accessory listing includes products from Eve, Logitech, and Aqara, and describes Eve Outdoor Cam as designed exclusively for HomeKit Secure Video. The catalog establishes that camera options exist, but a listing or brand name alone is not enough to establish that every model supports Secure Video. Verify the exact model’s compatibility and current availability before buying.
For a camera comparison, check Secure Video support first, then compare placement and weather protection, wired or wireless power, field of view and night vision, built-in features such as a floodlight or two-way audio, and current price and availability. These details vary by model and are not established uniformly by Apple’s catalog.
