The right setup depends on which service supplies updates to each device and update class—and which system has authority over its policies.
Choose the management path that fits your Windows environment
Microsoft documents Windows Update client policies as configurable through Group Policy as well as mobile device management. On supported commercial Windows editions, these policies can control which updates are offered, when they are applied, and how deployments are staged. Intune is therefore not required for ordinary client-policy controls. Confirm that each target Windows version and edition supports the policies you plan to use; Microsoft’s Windows Update client policy documentation was last updated August 19, 2026.

| Management path | Where it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Group Policy with Windows Update client policies | Domain-managed Windows client fleets that can reach Microsoft Update and need policy-based timing or deployment cohorts. | Windows edition and policy support, deferrals and deadlines, restart experience, device groups, and internet access. |
| WSUS | Environments using an on-premises update service and approval or distribution workflow. | Server and client configuration, scan sources for each update class, infrastructure maintenance, and policy overlap. |
| Configuration Manager | Organizations already managing clients through Configuration Manager software updates. | Software Update Point and WSUS configuration, client settings, maintenance windows, and any Windows Update client policy integration. |
| Third-party patch-management service | Environments that need capabilities beyond their existing Windows management stack. | Supported products and OS versions, connectivity, deployment controls, reporting, security review, licensing, and procurement terms. |
Microsoft documents Configuration Manager software update points backed by WSUS and integration with Windows Update client policies in its WSUS configuration guidance. This is not a recommendation that one path is best for every organization: choose based on your infrastructure, device fleet, and update workflow.

Plan a staged rollout of quality updates
Quality updates are generally monthly, and the latest applicable cumulative update brings a device current for its installed Windows version. Microsoft describes this cadence as typical, not as a guaranteed release schedule. Its quality-update guidance was last updated April 9, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- Instantly productive. Simpler, more intuitive UI and effortless navigation. New features like snap layouts help you manage multiple tasks with ease.
- Smarter collaboration. Have effective online meetings. Share content and mute/unmute right from the taskbar (1) Stay focused with intelligent noise cancelling and background blur.(2)
- Reassuringly consistent. Have confidence that your applications will work. Familiar deployment and update tools. Accelerate adoption with expanded deployment policies.
- Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.
Rather than release an update to every device at once, divide devices into validation and deployment cohorts. Microsoft recommends staged groups and using deferral or pause controls to validate an update on a smaller set before expanding deployment. It does not prescribe a universal number of rings or a fixed delay; set both to match your risk tolerance, support capacity, and servicing obligations. See Microsoft’s Windows Update configuration guidance.
- Inventory the fleet. Record Windows editions and versions, device ownership and join state, network access, and existing WSUS or Configuration Manager settings. Check that the editions in scope support the intended policies.
- Assign an update source and policy owner. Decide which service supplies quality updates and which management system configures their behavior. If different update classes use different services, configure scan sources deliberately and verify the effective policy on representative devices.
- Create pilot and broader groups. Start with a manageable validation cohort, then expand to additional deployment groups after checking update behavior and support impact. Choose deferral or pause settings appropriate to that schedule.
- Set the user and restart experience. Configure relevant policies for deadlines, restarts, and notifications so users know when a device must restart and administrators can manage the deployment window.
- Monitor results and resolve exceptions. Use the reporting available in your chosen management stack to check installation and compliance. Investigate devices whose effective policy or scan source differs from the intended design.
Keep update sources and policies from conflicting
Windows can use different services for different update classes, including quality, feature, and driver updates. That flexibility makes it important to define the intended scan source for each class and to avoid competing or stale settings from Group Policy, MDM, WSUS, or Configuration Manager. A device scanning the wrong service may not follow the deployment plan you intended.

- STREAMLIMED AND INTUITIVE UI | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- JOIN YOUR BUSINESS OR SCHOOL DOMAIN for easy access to network files, servers, and printers.

- Document which service supplies each update class and which system owns the related settings.
- Validate the effective policy and scan source on representative devices after a policy change.
- Prefer documented Group Policy or CSP controls for scan-source configuration over direct registry edits. Microsoft’s WSUS and Windows Update client configuration guidance explains the relevant integration and source considerations.
Without an Intune quality-update policy, devices can still receive updates through standard Windows Update behavior. Client policies can control deferrals and user-experience settings such as deadlines, restarts, and notifications; the precise behavior depends on the configured source and policies.
When a third-party patch service may make sense
A non-Microsoft patch-management service is an optional route, not a prerequisite for managing Windows quality updates without Intune. Vendors such as Action1 and ManageEngine describe Windows patch-management services, but vendor descriptions alone do not establish product quality or fit for a particular organization. Compare supported Windows versions and server coverage, remote or offline endpoint handling, update sources, deployment safeguards, reporting, security requirements, and total cost before selecting a service. Availability and terms can vary and should be verified with the vendor.
