Gintama is a comedy-action manga and anime about a samurai taking odd jobs in an alien-occupied version of Edo-era Japan. Created by Hideaki Sorachi, it pairs absurd jokes and genre parodies with action, close-knit friendships, and serious story arcs. If you’re deciding where to begin, the manga is the original work; the anime is its animated adaptation.

What is Gintama about?

In Gintama’s alternate Edo, aliens called Amanto have arrived and reshaped society. Tall buildings, trains, and motorcycles sit alongside the period setting, while the samurai way of life has been upended. Gintoki Sakata, a sweet-toothed, irreverent former samurai, makes a living taking odd jobs with his companions.

The premise gives the series room to poke fun at samurai stories, everyday life, and anime and manga conventions. One official episode listing, for example, includes the self-aware title “Watch Out! Weekly Shonen Jump Sometimes Comes Out on Saturdays!”—a taste of its willingness to joke about the medium, not a description of every episode. Crunchyroll’s Gintama listing

How did the manga and anime begin?

Hideaki Sorachi created the manga, which began running in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004, according to VIZ Media. The official Shonen Jump page also identifies Gintama as a Weekly Shonen Jump series. VIZ notes that the first graphic-novel volume includes Sorachi’s one-shot “Dandelion.”

#1 Best Overall

The anime adapts Sorachi’s manga. Bandai Namco Pictures’ information page credits Sorachi as the original author and names Weekly Shonen Jump as the manga’s publication venue. It also lists the anime’s production staff and credits Audio Highs for the music.

What kind of story and tone should you expect?

Gintama shifts between irreverent comedy and earnest drama. Its official anime synopsis presents the experience as one of laughter, tears, and warmth, while its broader premise supports comedy, action, and the relationships among Gintoki and his companions. The balance varies: not every episode has the same mix.

The series also has substantial continuing storylines, rather than consisting only of standalone gags. The official Gintama portal lists arcs including Benizakura, Yoshiwara in Flames, Shogun Assassination, Farewell Shinsengumi, and Silver Soul. That list is useful for seeing the range of the story, but it is not a complete viewing order for every episode, special, and film.

Should you start with the manga or anime?

Choose based on the format you prefer and what you can access. The manga is the original work, and you can read it at your own pace. The anime presents the adaptation with animation and music.

Starting point What it offers What to check
Manga The original story in graphic-novel form, read at your pace. Current English editions, formats, completeness, and stock.
Anime The animated adaptation, with performances, animation, and music. Local episode and season coverage, subtitles, dubs, and film access.

Either is a reasonable entry point: begin with the manga’s opening or the anime’s early episodes. The sources cited here do not establish one authoritative, complete order covering every television episode, OVA, and film, so avoid treating an arc directory as a release-order guide.

Where can you watch Gintama?

Crunchyroll and Disney+ each have an official Gintama title page. A title listing does not guarantee that every season, film, subtitle, or dub is available in your country. Check your local catalog for the specific installment and language option you want.
