High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is DRAM built as a vertical stack of dies and placed close to a processor in the same package. Through-silicon vias (TSVs) and microbumps connect the dies, while a very wide interface moves many bits in parallel. That design can deliver high bandwidth in a compact space; capacity, bandwidth, and power are separate considerations, not interchangeable measures.
What is high-bandwidth memory?
HBM is a package-level memory architecture for systems that need to move large amounts of data between memory and a processor. Unlike a conventional memory module connected over a relatively narrower interface, HBM puts stacked DRAM close to compute and uses many parallel data connections. Micron describes HBM as a high-bandwidth memory technology designed for high-performance computing and graphics workloads (Micron HBM FAQ).

Think of the stack as a multi-storey building: each floor is a DRAM die, and vertical connections link the floors. The analogy is only a visualization. In real HBM, TSVs are conductive interconnects formed through silicon; microbumps join dies electrically. The resulting stack is packaged alongside a processor, with advanced packaging providing connections between the memory and compute device. These short paths and numerous parallel connections are central to HBM’s bandwidth advantage (SK hynix HBM explanation; Micron HBM FAQ).

- DRAM dies: Store data. Stacking more dies, or using denser dies, can increase capacity.
- TSVs and microbumps: Carry electrical signals between dies within the stack.
- Wide interface: Lets many bits travel concurrently, contributing to bandwidth.
- Package: Positions HBM close to the processor and connects the memory stack to the compute device.
How do capacity and bandwidth differ?
Capacity is how much data the memory can hold. Bandwidth is how much data it can transfer per second. A larger capacity does not automatically mean a proportionally higher bandwidth: die count and density affect how much fits, while interface width and per-pin data rate help determine how quickly data can move.

Vendor specifications illustrate why every figure needs its product generation and configuration. Samsung’s product pages, as listed on October 7, 2026, specify HBM4 at 36 GB in a 12-high stack, up to 13.0 Gbps per pin, and up to 3,300 GB/s. Its HBM4E page specifies up to 64 GB and 4 TB/s in a 16-high stack, with up to 16 Gbps per pin (Samsung HBM4; Samsung HBM4E). Micron’s current HBM4 page separately lists a 12-high, 36 GB stack with bandwidth greater than 2.8 TB/s, a 2048-pin interface, and speed greater than 11.0 Gbps per pin (Micron HBM4).
These are vendor product specifications, not one shared industry-wide HBM value. Do not compare them as if their configurations and stated conditions were identical.

Why stack height matters
A historical example shows how stack height and capacity relate without making them the same metric. SK hynix’s October 20, 2021 announcement described an HBM3 product with 24 GB from 12 vertically stacked DRAM chips, each approximately 30 micrometers thick; the announced product offered up to 819 GB/s (SK hynix HBM3 announcement). That is a dated product example, not a current ceiling for HBM.

Why use HBM instead of relying only on conventional memory?
HBM is intended for processors that benefit from sustained, high data throughput, including AI accelerators, high-performance computing, and data-center workloads. Its wide interface and proximity to compute allow high data movement within the package (Samsung HBM product information; Micron HBM FAQ).

HBM does not necessarily replace general system memory. Micron describes HBM4 working alongside DDR5 or LPDDR5: a CPU can use general system memory while a GPU uses HBM for demanding workloads (Micron HBM4). The memories serve different roles in the system rather than representing a simple either-or choice.

Shorter connections and parallel data transfer can reduce energy per bit moved compared with conventional memory approaches. Micron attributes HBM’s lower energy per bit to its short connections and proximity to the processor (Micron HBM FAQ). This is an architectural advantage, not a guarantee that every HBM package uses less total power than every alternative: the outcome depends on the implementation and workload.

HBM still contributes to package power, and designers must account for heat removal and reliability. A 2021 experimental study by Larimi and co-authors examined voltage underscaling on the HBM chips they studied. Within those chips’ voltage guardband, the authors reported reducing power by a factor of 1.5; reducing voltage further produced additional savings but also unwanted bit flips (Larimi et al., 2021 study). Those results describe a specific experiment, not a recommended setting or an expected result for commercial HBM products.
What should you compare in HBM specifications?
When evaluating HBM for a system, compare like with like and keep each number attached to its vendor, generation, and configuration. The most useful specifications are:
- Capacity per stack: How much data one stack can store.
- Bandwidth per stack: The stated transfer rate, with units and any “up to” qualification.
- Stack height: The number of vertically stacked dies in the specified configuration.
- Per-pin data rate and interface width: Two distinct details that help explain how bandwidth is achieved.
- Power and thermal characteristics: Compare only figures reported under stated conditions; architectural claims about energy per bit do not establish total package power.
Vendor pages can change, and their best-case product figures may describe different configurations. A meaningful comparison therefore preserves the exact generation and stack configuration rather than ranking products by isolated headline numbers.
