A team advances to Knockouts as soon as it earns three match wins, or is eliminated as soon as it takes three match losses. In Round 1, four tiers determine the pairings, and teams from the same region cannot meet.
How the five-round Swiss Stage works
Worlds 2026 has 16 teams in the Swiss Stage. Although the format allows up to five rounds, a team’s stage ends earlier if it reaches three wins or three losses: three wins send it to Knockouts, while three losses eliminate it. The 2025 League Handbook also describes a 16-team Swiss Stage with eight teams advancing, but the 2026 primer is the source for this season’s specific draw rules.

This creates record groups that change after each round. A team that wins its opening match enters the 1–0 group; a team that loses enters the 0–1 group. Later results move teams into the corresponding record groups until they advance or are eliminated.
How the Round 1 draw is made
Riot divides the 16 teams into four tiers. Tier 1 teams draw against Tier 4 teams, and Tier 2 teams draw against Tier 3 teams. Teams from the same region cannot be paired in this opening round.

The tiers constrain who can meet; they do not mean that every team in one tier plays every team in the opposing tier. The teams are paired within those tier matchups subject to the no-same-region restriction. The list above is specific to the 2026 primer and should not be treated as a template for another year. How pairings work from Round 2 onward
For Rounds 2 through 5, teams are randomly paired with opponents who have the same record. Thus, teams at 1–0 are matched with other 1–0 teams, while teams at 0–1 are matched with other 0–1 teams. A team cannot be paired against an opponent it has already faced.

Same-region pairings are allowed starting in Round 2. The opening-round regional restriction does not carry forward through the rest of the Swiss Stage. Together, the same-record rule and the no-rematch rule explain why the next opponent is not simply another team from a fixed bracket: each round’s results determine the groups that can be drawn against one another.
These are the 2026 rules stated in Riot’s Worlds 2026 Primer. Riot’s 2024 primer also described the no-rematch rule, but the 2026 primer is the relevant source for this season’s restrictions.

What a 3–0, 3–1, or 3–2 record means
The numbers are match wins and losses, not game scores within a series. Any team that reaches three match wins advances; any team that reaches three match losses is eliminated. The route to that threshold can therefore finish in different rounds:
- 3–0: Three straight match wins secure advancement after three rounds.
- 3–1: The team advances after its fourth match, having taken one loss.
- 3–2: The team advances after its fifth match, having taken two losses.
- 0–3: Three straight losses eliminate the team after three rounds.
- 1–3: The team is eliminated after its fourth match.
- 2–3: The team is eliminated after its fifth match.
In short, reaching the threshold ends a team’s Swiss run; a team does not have to play all five rounds to qualify or be eliminated.

Which older details should not be assumed for 2026
Riot’s 2023 and 2024 primers document a best-of-one format for early matches that do not advance or eliminate a team, and best-of-three matches when a team advances or is eliminated. The 2026 primer cited here does not state the series length, so those older details do not establish the 2026 format. Riot’s 2023 primer and 2024 primer are historical references, not confirmation of this season’s match format.
The 2024 primer also said that initial draw pools determined side selection: the higher pool received side selection, and a coin flip decided it when both teams came from the same pool. The 2026 primer does not confirm that rule for this season, so it should not be treated as a current side-selection rule. Riot’s 2025 League Handbook provides a cross-check of the broad 16-team, five-round, eight-advance structure, not a substitute for 2026 draw details.
