How Hardware Wallets Protect Crypto—and What They Can’t Protect Against

Hardware wallets keep signing keys separate from connected computers, but they cannot make every approval safe or protect a recovery phrase someone exposes.

A hardware wallet helps protect cryptocurrency keys from routine exposure to malware on a connected computer or phone: it keeps the signing keys on a separate device and signs transactions there. It does not guarantee that a transaction is safe, protect a recovery phrase someone reveals, or eliminate physical, firmware, and supply-chain risks. Its security depends on how the device, transaction approvals, and recovery backup are handled.

What a hardware wallet actually protects

Cryptocurrency remains recorded on its blockchain; a hardware wallet does not hold coins inside the device. It holds or uses the private keys that authorize transactions. Typically, a computer or phone prepares transaction data and sends it to the wallet, which produces a signature internally. The connected host may be compromised, but the private key should not be sent to it. This separation reduces one route for remote theft; it does not make the host or the transaction trustworthy. Trezor’s explanation of hardware wallets and Ledger’s security model describe this distinction.

Protection depends on the design

Keeping keys off a general-purpose computer can make it harder for ordinary malware, such as a keylogger, to copy them directly. Ledger’s documentation describes physical approval as a way to prevent compromised host software from silently using a device to sign. It also describes deriving a key for an operation, using it, and erasing it to limit exposure. These are vendor descriptions of its own design, not universal guarantees for every wallet or proof that a user-approved action is safe. Ledger’s security-model documentation

What a hardware wallet cannot protect against

Someone obtaining the recovery phrase

A recovery phrase can restore access to the wallet on another compatible device. Someone who gets it may be able to access the associated funds without possessing the original hardware wallet. Do not photograph the phrase, save it online, enter it on a computer or phone, or share it. Losing or damaging the only backup can also make recovery difficult or impossible. A deceptive or misunderstood approval

A compromised host can send transaction data the user did not intend to authorize. Ledger’s developer documentation, updated September 23, 2026, puts the risk this way: “An attacker who controls the host can present a hash of a transaction the user did not intend to authorise.” If a user approves a request without understanding it, the device may produce a valid signature for a harmful action. Physical confirmation is a useful barrier to silent signing, not a substitute for understanding what is being approved. Ledger’s security-model documentation

Unclear details or blind signing

The computer or phone screen can be tampered with, so check transaction details on the device’s own display before approving. For a transfer, review the destination and amount. For a smart-contract interaction, understand the action or permissions being granted. A device display is a meaningful safeguard only to the extent that it shows useful details for that transaction type and the user can interpret them. If the device does not make the action clear, do not assume that approving blindly is safe. Ledger’s security-model documentation; Ledger’s explanation of clear signing

A substituted recipient address

Malware can replace a copied destination address with a different one that looks similar. A 2021 paper describing the EthClipper attack tested this mechanism against Trezor, Ledger, and KeepKey devices. A signer can show the substituted address for confirmation, but that safeguard fails if the user checks only a few characters or skips verification. The paper’s authors reported that, in their attack setup using off-the-shelf PCs and NAS storage, an attacker could mine a database matching 25% of an address’s digits to achieve a 50% chance of finding a fitting fake. That experimental result is specific to the paper’s setup; it is not a general wallet-compromise rate or evidence of how often the attack occurs in practice. The EthClipper paper

Physical, firmware, and supply-chain attacks

A device can be lost, stolen, tampered with, or affected by a hardware or firmware vulnerability. Trezor lists vulnerability categories including seed extraction or injection, PIN bypass, bypassing user confirmation, private-key extraction, and physical or supply-chain attacks. A listed category does not mean every device or model is affected. For a specific device, consult its maker’s current security advisories rather than assuming a general category applies. Phishing and social engineering

An attacker may trick a person into revealing a recovery phrase or approving a malicious operation. The device cannot tell an informed choice from a choice made under deception. Trezor identifies phishing and social engineering as risks to wallet backups. Trezor’s hardware-wallet guidance

How to use one more safely

  1. Set it up through the device’s official process. Generate the recovery phrase through that setup flow; do not use a device that arrives with a phrase already prepared. Trezor’s seed-phrase guidance
  2. Keep the recovery phrase private and offline. Do not photograph it, send it through chat or email, store it in cloud storage, or type it into a website, computer, or phone. Any additional copy remains a credential that needs protection. Trezor’s seed-phrase guidance
  3. Inspect approvals on the device. For transfers, check the destination address and amount. For smart-contract actions, understand what the operation permits or does. Stop if the device does not clearly show what you are authorizing. Ledger’s security-model documentation; Ledger’s clear-signing guidance
  4. Assume the host and clipboard could be hostile. Do not treat an address on a computer screen as authoritative. Compare the destination shown by the signing device with the address you intend to use, rather than relying on a quick visual glance. The EthClipper paper
  5. Protect both the device and its backup. Plan for theft, loss, and damage without making the recovery phrase easier for someone else to find. Trezor’s security information; Trezor’s seed-phrase guidance
  6. Keep firmware and wallet software current. Verify update instructions through the device maker’s official channel. Trezor’s security information

How to evaluate a wallet’s security claims

There is no general statistic here for the share of crypto losses hardware wallets prevent or how frequently they are attacked. Nor do the cited sources establish a best model. When assessing a device, look at the details that determine whether its protection will work in your own workflow:

  • Physical and firmware security: PIN protections, authenticity checks, update procedures, and disclosed vulnerabilities or advisories.
  • Usability: whether you can reliably check transaction details and keep the recovery phrase secure. A safeguard that is routinely skipped or misunderstood offers less protection in practice.
