Yes. Keeping your recovery phrase secret blocks a major route to theft, but it does not make a hardware wallet impossible to compromise. Someone might attack a device they can physically access, trick you into approving a transfer, interfere with the computer-to-wallet transaction flow, or deceive you into exposing secrets another way. The risk depends on the wallet model, its firmware and recovery process, the attacker’s access, and what you verify before signing.
What keeping your recovery phrase private does—and does not—protect
Your recovery phrase is the master backup credential for the wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to restore the wallet on another device and control its funds. Keep it offline: do not photograph it, save it to cloud storage, or type it into a website, phone, or computer. Ledger’s hardware-wallet security guidance, updated May 7, 2024, advises against those practices.

Phrase secrecy protects against someone using the backup to recreate your wallet. It does not prevent every attack on the device, your transaction, your setup process, or you. Nor does a demonstration of a possible attack tell you how often that attack occurs; the available sources do not establish a population-level probability that a hardware wallet will be hacked.

Physical access to the device
A stolen or accessible device can be targeted directly. In a January 2019 disclosure, Ledger Donjon described a physical seed-extraction attack against Trezor One, Trezor T, KeepKey, and clones. The attack required physical access and specialized equipment. It is a historical, device-specific disclosure—not evidence that every current hardware wallet is vulnerable. See Ledger Donjon’s disclosure.

- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Protections and recovery flows differ by model. Trezor’s security overview says the Safe 3 and Safe 5 verify the PIN inside a Secure Element, while the Model T and Model One do not have hardware-enforced rate limiting. It also describes a Model One recovery procedure in which backup words are entered on a computer in randomized order. These details are specific to the models and workflows described; do not assume one device’s protection applies to another.
Ledger’s explanation of physical attacks on hardware wallets discusses techniques such as power glitching and describes defenses in its own Secure Element. Those are vendor claims about its products, not independent certification that every hardware wallet is secure or unhackable.

A manipulated transaction
A hardware wallet can protect private keys while still depending on a connected computer to prepare transaction data. A 2021 academic study describes EthClipper, clipboard malware designed to evade address verification, and reports tests involving Trezor, Ledger, and KeepKey wallets. The study shows why the computer display alone is not enough; it does not establish how commonly this attack occurs. Read the EthClipper study abstract.

Phishing, a compromised setup, or human error
A fake site, app, or supposed support contact may ask you to enter the phrase. If you provide it, the attacker need not break the wallet. Ledger warns users not to share the phrase, enter it on a computer or smartphone, or accept a preconfigured device; its guidance also notes that self-custody does not remove risks from social engineering, physical threats, or human error.
A passphrase that is misunderstood or mishandled
Some wallets support an additional passphrase that derives a different wallet. Trezor’s firmware documentation describes host-supplied entry and an on-device entry option, with behavior tied to firmware versions 1.9.0 and 2.3.0. The Safe 5 FAQ says access to a passphrase-protected wallet requires both the backup and passphrase.

A passphrase can add protection if the recovery phrase is exposed, but it becomes another secret you must protect and remember. Forgetting it can prevent access to the wallet it derives. Entry methods vary by device, so follow the exact model’s instructions; a passphrase that is easy to guess is not automatically useful protection.

Practical steps to reduce the risk
- Set up the device yourself. Use the official setup process and reject a device that arrives preconfigured.
- Keep the recovery phrase offline. Store it in a physically protected place. Do not photograph it, put it in cloud storage, or enter it into a website, phone, or computer.
- Use official software and firmware channels. Follow instructions for your exact model. Trezor’s security overview describes official firmware signing; verify updates through the vendor’s official process.
- Protect physical access. Use a PIN and keep the device secure. PIN protections and recovery procedures differ among models, so check the documentation for yours.
- Verify before signing. Check the recipient and transaction details on the hardware wallet’s own display, not only on the connected computer.
- Act quickly if the phrase may be exposed. Treat the wallet as compromised and move assets to a newly generated wallet using a clean, trusted setup. Anyone with the phrase may restore the wallet elsewhere.
What a backup plate can and cannot do
A metal recovery-phrase backup can help protect a physical backup from some forms of damage. It does not prevent theft by someone who can read the phrase, malware on a connected computer, or compromise of the wallet device. Ledger discusses backup materials in its security-model explanation; treat a metal backup as a durability measure, not an anti-theft control.
How to assess a particular wallet model
There is no single security claim that applies to every hardware wallet. For a specific model, check the vendor’s current documentation for these points:
- How the device protects keys and checks PIN attempts, including whether it uses a Secure Element.
- How firmware authenticity is verified and how updates are delivered.
- Whether recovery words are entered on the device or on a connected computer.
- How any passphrase is entered and what is required to recover a passphrase-protected wallet.
- Whether the device’s display lets you inspect the transaction details you need before signing.
Model names and security features are not interchangeable. A past attack on one generation does not prove that every newer device has the same weakness; a security feature on one model does not establish that all models have it.
