Stop disturbing the find and its surroundings. What to do next depends on whether you have found a portable object, a fixed archaeological feature, or possible human remains: contact Police Scotland immediately for suspected human remains; report a possible portable antiquity to the Treasure Trove Unit within one month; and, if remains are exposed during development, contact the local authority archaeologist immediately.
What should I do if I find something of archaeological significance in Scotland?
- Stop work around it. Do not dig further, clean it, remove it or otherwise disturb the suspected find or its setting.
- Note the location and take photographs if you can do so without disturbing anything. A smartphone GPS location and photographs of the find in place and close up can help document it. These are practical suggestions from Archaeology Scotland, not a substitute for reporting.
- Choose the reporting route by what you found. Possible human remains require an immediate call to Police Scotland. A portable archaeological object should be reported to the Treasure Trove Unit. A fixed feature or archaeological remains exposed during development should be brought to the local authority archaeologist’s attention immediately.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) advises reporting most potential archaeological finds, even if they seem unremarkable. Under Scotland’s Treasure Trove system, a portable find need not be made of precious metal to be reportable. The Unit assesses reports; do not try to establish the object’s age or value by cleaning or handling it.

What if I find human remains?
Contact Police Scotland immediately. Do not touch the remains or disturb the nearby ground. Historic Environment Scotland’s instruction is: “Do not touch the remains, and avoid disturbing the ground in their vicinity.” Police may consult the planning authority archaeologist if they suspect an ancient burial. Do not report suspected human remains to Treasure Trove instead of contacting police.
How do I report a portable archaeological object?
Report a possible portable antiquity to the Treasure Trove Unit within one month. HES says to complete the online reporting form and email it to the Unit with images of the find. Use the current instructions on HES’s Treasure Trove guidance for the form and contact details; check that page rather than relying on an old email address.

Do not take an unreported find out of Scotland. HES says removal from Scotland requires Treasure Trove permission. Recovered wreck is handled through the Receiver of Wreck, while fossils and unworked animal bones are not covered by Treasure Trove; HES points readers to the Scottish Fossil Code for fossils.
What if I uncover a fixed feature during building or groundworks?
A wall, burial, structure or other feature that remains in the ground is different from a portable object. Contact the local authority archaeologist immediately and avoid disturbing exposed artefacts or remains. Scottish Government Planning Advice Note 2/2011 advised leaving them in situ if possible while the archaeologist was summoned.

Does finding an antiquity on private land mean it belongs to the owner?
No. Do not assume that land ownership gives the owner or finder ownership of a portable antiquity. HES says portable antiquities that are not otherwise owned and have no demonstrable heir are Crown property; it also says landowners have no property rights to such portable antiquities and finders have no ownership rights to unreported found objects. This guidance concerns portable antiquities, not every object, building, land interest or fixed archaeological feature.

Should I use a metal detector or check local records?
A detector is not an appropriate first response to an unexpected find: do not search or dig around it. HES requires consent to use equipment capable of detecting metal within a protected place such as a scheduled monument. To understand the context after reporting, you can search trove.scot and the local authority Historic Environment Record. These records describe known sites; they cannot definitively identify a new find and do not replace reporting it.
