Google says its Noto 3D Emoji began as familiar 2D drawings, then became hand-shaped 3D models designed to stay clear and expressive—not photorealistic. The team used user research, small-screen tests and contrast checks to refine silhouettes, faces and details while keeping the illustrations recognizable.
Why Google moved Noto Emoji into 3D
When Google announced the collection on May 12, 2026, Creative Director Jennifer Daniel described the aim as making digital expression feel more physical and emotionally present. The change also marks a new stage in Google’s emoji design, following the blob style associated with the 2010s. In a July 17, 2026 explainer, Daniel connected the redesign to the way people use emoji to add nuance and subtext to brief messages.

Google describes Noto as containing 3,977 characters. That is the company’s reported count, rather than an independently verified tally. Google’s July account discusses the collection and its design goals.
How the team made the characters
From 2D drawings to 3D models
The process started with 2D drawings, but the finished assets are true 3D models. Google says designers drew, sculpted and debated characters by hand instead of rushing to automated generation. The challenge was to add dimension without losing emoji’s familiar illustrative personality.

Expressive clarity instead of anatomical realism
The team prioritized an immediately readable expression over lifelike anatomy. Google Design uses a kangaroo as an example: a literal anatomical treatment might feel intimidating, while illustration can keep the character playful. Google Design says research led by UX Engineer Dr. Alexander Robertson found that highly anatomical facial details, such as irises or nostril depth, slowed emotion processing. The account does not provide the study’s methods or sample size, so this should be read as Google’s report rather than a broadly established result.
Designing the whole silhouette
Flat images can hide what a three-dimensional model reveals. Google Design recounts that the old poodle illustration concealed a fourth leg, which became apparent during sculpting. The team also changed a raccoon from a floating head into a full-body animal. Google says Robertson’s research supported complete animal silhouettes because stance and posture help convey intent; the article does not publish study details.

Keeping details legible at tiny sizes
Google Design says the team tested models at 18×18 pixels. At that scale, texture and props can become visual noise, so the team’s rule was to use at most three essential identifying details per emoji. For a volcano, the mountain and molten lava flow carried the idea; other details were removed.
Google also reports user studies suggesting that people preferred full-body animals to floating heads, that props could hurt comprehension, and that small changes in a wink’s direction could change its perceived meaning. The company accounts do not disclose dates, methods or sample sizes for those studies.

How Google approached contrast and skin tones
Google identified a visibility problem for some emoji with darker skin tones on dark chat backgrounds. In its July account, the company says it built an AI-powered contrast tool to analyze emoji pixels, flag low contrast and suggest improvements. Google Design says the audit examined image edges against common backgrounds.
The tool identified issues; designers chose how to address them. Rather than apply a filter that could wash out skin tones, they manually added subtle rim lighting and contour highlights. As program manager Wilder Wells put it: “While our algorithm flagged the failures, it didn’t solve them.” Google Design also stated: “Nobody should have to choose between using their actual skin tone and having their messages be legible.”

Open-source files and rollout plans
Google describes Noto as an open-source portfolio and says raw .OBJ files can support community projects such as VR worlds, apps and memes. Google Design directs readers to the Noto Emoji GitHub page for files and the complete collection. A July 18, 2026 repository issue asked where the announced .OBJ files could be found; the question alone does not establish whether the files were available or unavailable.
