To change the refresh rate (Hz) on an LG UltraGear monitor in Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, then choose a refresh rate from Choose a refresh rate. The list only shows modes available to your current monitor, resolution, connection and PC. To confirm what signal the monitor is receiving, press the joystick button beneath the screen, open Settings and check the input refresh rate.

Use the monitor’s joystick button, usually below the screen, to open its Settings menu and inspect the input refresh rate.
Choose a mode that is supported at your current resolution and connection. A setting in Windows is not, by itself, proof that the monitor is receiving that signal; check the monitor’s input information as well.

Why your desired Hz may not appear
UltraGear models do not all support the same refresh rates, and available modes can depend on the resolution, port, cable and PC. LG USA Support’s help article, published July 9, 2025, gives examples ranging from 120Hz to 480Hz across different models; these examples are not a compatibility list for every UltraGear display. LG also shows sample timings including 1920×1080 at 60Hz and 2560×1440 at 120Hz, 143.99Hz and 239.97Hz. Its guidance is explicit: “Supported modes may vary by model; please refer to the user manual for the supported modes of your specific model.” See LG’s higher-refresh-rate instructions.

Check your exact monitor model and resolution. Find its supported timings in the owner’s manual; examples for another UltraGear model do not establish what yours can display.

Check the connection and cable. LG’s general guidance mentions DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 or higher for higher refresh rates and recommends trying the cable supplied with the monitor. The required connection depends on the monitor’s supported mode and port.

Check the PC’s capabilities. The graphics hardware, CPU and overall PC performance can affect which modes are available.

Troubleshoot a refresh-rate mismatch
The rate you want is missing from Windows
Confirm the model’s supported timings in its manual, then check the selected resolution, cable and connection, and whether the PC can deliver that mode. If you are using another cable, try the included one before buying a replacement. A different cable helps only if the current cable is the limiting factor.

Check the monitor’s input refresh rate in its on-screen Settings menu. This tells you what signal is reaching the display, rather than only which option is selected in Windows.

You are choosing between two available rates
First make sure each rate is supported for your exact monitor, resolution and connection. Then choose according to your preference: a higher supported rate can provide smoother motion, while a lower supported rate may be useful for troubleshooting or personal preference. There is no single best setting for every UltraGear model and PC.
