In one reported Katritzky transamination, the reaction proceeded faster in glass than in plastic, and adding glass particles accelerated it further. The researchers attributed the effect to reactive silanol groups on the glass surface—not to a universal property of glassware. The measured gains belong to specific experimental setups, not a general rule for chemistry.
What the researchers observed
Li, Mehari, Wei, Liu, and Cooks studied a Katritzky reaction in bulk solution at room temperature. Their paper reports faster reaction in glass containers than in plastic vessels. Adding glass particles increased the rate, and the rate rose with the amount of glass in the reported experiments. The authors also describe a similar effect in levitated droplets. The primary study appeared online in 2020 and in a 2021 journal issue.

| Reported result | Experimental context | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 33-fold increase | Purdue’s 2020 account describes an experiment using 32.5-micron glass spheres at a glass-silanol-to-reagent ratio of 1:16. This is a result for that stated setup, not a general rate multiplier. | Purdue University Department of Chemistry |
| More than two orders of magnitude increase | The primary paper’s abstract uses this broader description for the effect of added glass particles in its experiments; it is not the same narrowly specified example as Purdue’s 33-fold figure. | Li et al., primary study |
Why might glass speed up the reaction?
The proposed explanation is surface-mediated catalysis. The primary study reports evidence that glass acts as a heterogeneous base catalyst in the deprotonation step and is recovered unchanged. In Purdue’s described experiment, chemically blocking silanols on the glass prevented the observed reaction. Together, these findings point to accessible glass-surface silanols as important to the effect; they do not show that every glass surface will behave identically.

A 2022 review of vessel effects in organic chemistry discusses the Katritzky example alongside comparisons involving vessel materials, glass cleaning, added particles, and silanized particles. That context reinforces why surface composition and treatment matter. The Chemical Science review does not establish a universal advantage for glass across reactions.
What the result does—and does not—show
- It shows: In this particular Katritzky transamination, vessel material mattered under the studied conditions, and added glass particles produced further acceleration.
- It does not show: That glassware speeds arbitrary reactions, that any retail glass beads will reproduce the effect, or that the reported rate gains transfer directly to other substrates or scales.
- Important variables: Vessel material, particle addition, particle size, surface condition, amount of accessible glass surface relative to reagent, reaction system, and whether the experiment uses bulk solution or droplet geometry.
The accessible reports do not establish broad substrate generality, scale-up performance, routine synthetic usefulness, or independent laboratory replication. Those remain open questions. Anyone attempting to reproduce the result would need to match the reaction conditions and characterize the glass composition, size, and surface chemistry rather than assume ordinary glassware is equivalent.

Why vessel surfaces can matter in chemistry
A reaction vessel is not always an inert container. Its surface can contact reactants and influence chemistry, so changing from plastic to glass—or changing the treatment or exposed area of glass—can alter a measured reaction. In this study, the evidence is specific to a Katritzky reaction and supports a role for surface silanols; it should be read as a demonstration of a possible vessel effect, not a general laboratory technique.
