Is Nanoporous Methane Storage Impossible? What 2025 Research Shows

Porous materials can store methane, but the gap between a promising laboratory result and a practical tank remains substantial.

No. Porous materials can adsorb methane, and a 2025 study reported graphene-coated porous carbon that retained methane at ambient pressure and temperature. The unresolved challenge is whether a material can deliver enough gas safely and repeatedly in a practical, complete storage system. A promising laboratory result is not yet a vehicle-ready tank.

What does “impossible” mean for methane storage?

It is possible to store methane in nanoporous materials. The harder question is whether the gas can be stored densely and then released when needed, without relying on impractical pressure, temperature, material, or operating conditions.

Adsorption is not the same as usable delivery

A material may take up a large amount of methane at the high-pressure end of a test and still hold too much of it as pressure falls. The amount available between charging and discharge conditions is the deliverable capacity. It is a more useful measure for storage than maximum uptake alone.

Material performance is not tank performance

Capacity figures can refer to the adsorbent itself, the adsorption chamber that holds it, or an entire storage vessel. These volumes are not interchangeable: a real system also needs a container, and the material’s packing density affects how much adsorbent fits inside. A laboratory figure for a material therefore does not by itself establish the usable capacity of a tank.

What benchmark does the field use?

A 2025 Advanced Materials review reports a DOE/ARPA-E volumetric deliverable-capacity target of 263 cm³ STP per mL of adsorption chamber at 298 K and 65 bar, corresponding to compressed methane at 250 bar. The same review reports a gravimetric target of 0.5 g methane per g adsorbent. These are separate measures: one is based on chamber volume and the other on adsorbent mass.

The review states that no rigid or flexible metal-organic framework (MOF) it surveyed had met the cited target at the time of publication. That is a review-time assessment, not a timeless statement about every porous material or subsequent work. Nor would meeting one laboratory capacity target, by itself, prove that a complete storage system is viable.

Reported result or benchmark Figure and conditions What it establishes
DOE/ARPA-E volumetric target, as reported by the 2025 Advanced Materials review 263 cm³ STP per mL of adsorption chamber at 298 K and 65 bar; the review relates this to compressed methane at 250 bar A chamber-level deliverable target—not a material-only uptake figure or a demonstrated full-tank result
Gravimetric target, as reported by the same 2025 review 0.5 g methane per g adsorbent A mass-based target; it cannot be substituted for the chamber-volume target
Graphene-coated porous carbon, reported in a 2025 Nature Energy study 142 v/v reversible volumetric capacity; reported pressure-equivalent loading of 19.9 MPa at 298 K, with retention below 318 K and release upon heating to 473 K A material-level experimental result under the study’s reported conditions—not evidence that a vehicle tank achieves the DOE/ARPA-E chamber target

The numbers in the table describe different measures and conditions. They should not be ranked as though they were readings from a single test: capacity comparisons need the pressure window, temperature, and volume or mass basis, as well as clarity on whether the number represents total uptake or gas that can actually be delivered.

What did the 2025 graphene-coated carbon study find?

The 2025 Nature Energy study, titled “Ambient pressure storage of high-density methane in nanoporous carbon coated with graphene,” reports methane retention at ambient pressure and temperature below 318 K after high-pressure charging. The researchers attribute the behavior to graphene acting as a thermally controlled barrier that obstructs or activates pores.

Why the result matters

It challenges the blanket claim that methane cannot be retained in nanoporous carbon under ambient conditions. The study reports a reversible volumetric capacity of 142 v/v and pressure-equivalent loading of 19.9 MPa at 298 K. Those are findings for the studied material and experimental conditions.

What it does not demonstrate

The reported release method heats the material to 473 K. The study does not establish that a complete vehicle-scale vessel can deliver the same performance over its lifetime, or that manufacturing economics, system-level safety, or commercial availability have been demonstrated. The result is a proof of concept, not a commercial storage product.

Why hasn’t adsorbed natural gas replaced compressed natural gas?

Adsorption could offer a different way to store methane, but a practical alternative must work across the full charge-and-discharge cycle. It needs sufficient deliverable capacity in the volume and mass available for a tank, under workable operating conditions. Strong adsorption can help retain gas at lower pressure, but it can also make that gas harder to release. The balance—not peak uptake alone—is central.

Natural gas is a mixture, and cycling can change what remains in a material

Pure methane is often used as a stand-in for natural gas, but real gas can contain heavier hydrocarbons. A 2024 Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS) study tested a 95:5 methane–ethane mixture and found that ethane accumulated in the studied MOFs over repeated fill-and-empty cycles, eventually degrading storage performance. The effect was more pronounced in materials with smaller pore volumes.

This is evidence about the materials and mixture tested, not proof that every MOF behaves the same way. It does show why pure-methane capacity alone cannot establish how an adsorbent will perform with natural-gas components over repeated cycles.

Container volume and material packing both matter

The DOE/ARPA-E volumetric target cited in the 2025 review is expressed per adsorption-chamber volume. A material-only volumetric figure leaves out the difference between the material’s volume and the chamber it occupies. The review notes that packing density can make the material-level volumetric target higher than the chamber-level target. A fair system comparison must use the same volume basis and account for the gas released over a stated pressure window.

What other nanoporous storage approaches are being explored?

MOFs

MOFs are porous materials whose pore size and chemical environment can be tailored for methane storage and gas purification. The 2025 review discusses rigid and flexible MOF structures and identifies pore-volume and pore-size optimization as areas for further improvement. It also describes commercial application as an active challenge; the review’s assessment was that the MOFs it surveyed had not met the cited deliverable-capacity target.

Adsorption combined with hydrate formation

A 2025 Langmuir study examined a different route: combining methane adsorption with hydrate formation in nanoporous media containing preadsorbed water. The authors reported that adsorption and hydration can reinforce each other in some conditions, but can also act antagonistically and weaken both processes. They said the mechanisms remain insufficiently understood for large-scale application, so this is an early research direction rather than a demonstrated replacement for compressed or adsorbed gas storage.

What would show that a material is ready for a storage system?

A strong material result is only one part of the case. To judge whether a storage concept is practical, look for results that address the whole operating cycle and the complete vessel, not just a best-case capacity measurement.

  • Deliverable capacity: methane released between explicitly stated charge and discharge pressures, rather than total uptake at maximum pressure.
  • Comparable basis: whether volume means adsorbent, adsorption chamber, or full vessel—and whether mass capacity is reported separately.
  • Operating conditions: charge, discharge, and storage temperatures and pressures, including any heating needed to release methane.
  • Realistic gas and repeated cycles: performance with relevant natural-gas constituents and after repeated filling and emptying.
  • System evidence: a complete vessel’s performance, including the effects of packing, container volume, and the operating process.
  • Practical deployment: evidence for lifecycle performance, manufacturing, economics, and commercial availability rather than an adsorbent measurement alone.

On the available evidence, nanoporous methane storage is a real physical phenomenon, and the graphene-coated carbon result is notable. Whether it becomes a practical alternative to compressed natural gas depends on meeting system-level requirements that a material-level experiment does not settle.
