How Electrochromism Enhances Latent Fingerprints on Stainless Steel

Electrochromism can make some latent fingerprints visible by using fingerprint residue to control where an electrochromic material deposits on stainless steel. The material forms on the exposed metal around the residue, producing a contrasting, often negative image of the print. Researchers have explored several materials in laboratory studies; the results do not amount to a universal field procedure.

How electrochromic fingerprint enhancement works

In the foundational method, fingerprint residue on stainless steel acts as a mask: it inhibits electrochemical processes in the covered regions. When a potential is applied, polyaniline deposits preferentially on the exposed background, leaving the fingermark visible as a negative image. The contrast comes from the difference between coated and residue-masked areas.

The applied potential can also change the polymer’s optical properties. The 2010 study by Ann L. Beresford and A. Robert Hillman states: “By variation of the applied potential, the polymer optical characteristics can be continuously and reversibly adjusted to optimize visual contrast of the fingerprint.” This adjustment is a way to tune the image’s appearance, not evidence that every print can be made legible.

#1 Best Overall
Leelosp Fingerprint Kit Bichromatic Powder Forensic Science Dusting
  • Basic Fingerprint Kit: the basic latent fingerprint kit is a true print kit, this fingerprinting kit was created for educational use, comes fully stocked with supplies to provide at least 25 runs, and comes with 1 carrying case for storage
  • Fiberglass Fingerprint Brush: fiberglass brush gets softer with every use; This brush can hold more powder than traditional bristle brushes; Stores in included tube for reuse
  • Latent Fingerprint Powder: silver and black bichromatic fingerprint powder appears black when powdered on light colored surfaces and gray when powdered on dark-colored surfaces; It is effective on most nonabsorbent surfaces
  • Fingerprint Cards: fingerprint cards have two sides, place the raised print on a smooth, glossy white backing, the back of the card is an area for the case number, time, date and a diagram showing the location of the print
  • Fingerprint Extraction Tape: 1 roll of ultra transparent palm fingerprint extraction tape, tear off a piece of tape, you can cut it freely as needed, lift the developed print, and stick the tape to the backing card

Materials researchers have tested

The approach is not limited to polyaniline. Later laboratory studies examined other electrodeposited materials, but their results come from different experiments and are not a single head-to-head ranking.

Material What the study reports
Polyaniline The 2010 study describes selective deposition on stainless steel and reversible adjustment of optical properties with applied potential.
Polyaniline and PEDOT The 2012 comparison examined polyaniline and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on stainless steel, alongside conventional development methods. Office of Justice Programs study record; PubMed record.
Cobalt oxide (Co3O4) A 2021 study reports a potential-adjustable film and describes enhancing contrast by extracting the blue channel from captured images. Electrochimica Acta study.
Manganese oxides A 2024 study describes simultaneous fingerprint development and enhancement using electrodeposited manganese oxides in a neutral aqueous electrolyte. PubMed abstract; Talanta article.

What the comparative study found

The 2012 study compared electrochromic enhancement with dusting, wet powder, and cyanoacrylate fuming on stainless steel. It reported that the electrochromic procedure “frequently outperformed” those methods, particularly for samples with more challenging histories. The experiment varied donors, exposure conditions, and aging; deposits were tested for up to 28 days. That maximum describes the study’s sample-aging period, not how long a method remains effective or a guarantee of performance.

Crime Scene Basic Latent Fingerprint Kit, Bichromatic Grey Powder
  • This fingerprint kit is a real print kit, fully stocked with enough supplies. This Kit was created and priced for educational use.
  • 1 regular latent powder, 1 oz.
  • 1 fiberglass fingerprint brush, extra soft
  • 1 set of fingerprint backing cards (25 sheets)
  • 1 lifting tape pad ( 25 sheets )

This result applies to that study’s conditions. It should not be read as proof that electrochromism is generally superior in casework: the later Co3O4 and manganese-oxide studies used different designs and do not establish a common ranking against traditional methods.

What DNA-typing results mean

Researchers also assessed whether electrochemical treatment left fingerprint material usable for forensic DNA typing. The 2021 Co3O4 study reported 80.9% as the ratio of detected loci after its electrochemical process. The 2024 manganese-oxide study reported up to 98.5% after its treatment. These are outcomes reported by the individual studies, not universal DNA recovery rates; they should not be compared as if the experiments used identical methods.

Scope and practical limits

The cited work establishes laboratory research focused chiefly on stainless steel. It does not establish performance across all metals, routine forensic deployment, or one accepted operating protocol. Electrochromic enhancement should therefore be understood as a research-developed approach whose results depend on the material, substrate, sample history, and experimental procedure—not as a ready-made substitute for standard field methods.

Crime Scene Latent Fingerprint Powder, One Ounce, Use on Light Colored Surfaces (Regular Black Powder)
  • Crime Scene's black fingerprint powder is a professional-grade forensic tool designed for educational and demonstration purposes. This one-ounce container of regular black powder is ideal for developing latent fingerprints on light-colored surfaces.
  • Effectively works on multiple surfaces including untreated metal, glass, wax, painted surfaces, and textured materials
  • One ounce of powder contained in a secure container.
  • Requires careful supervision and controlled application with a fingerprint brush (not included.)

A University of Leicester technology-transfer document describes the technology as an area of commercialization interest, but does not by itself establish current routine use or a standardized procedure. University of Leicester technology-transfer document.
