How Geologists Date Impact Craters and Estimate Asteroid Size

Impact ages come from particular minerals and geological clocks; asteroid sizes are inferred from crater evidence and models that account for the impact and target.

Geologists date an impact by measuring minerals or rocks formed or isotopically reset by the impact, then checking what that material records in its geological setting. They estimate the impactor’s size by combining crater dimensions and other physical evidence with impact-scaling relationships or numerical models. A crater’s diameter alone cannot reveal one unique asteroid size: speed, impact angle, projectile and target properties, gravity, and later changes to the crater all matter.

How do geologists determine when an impact happened?

The date belongs to a particular sample and a particular geological clock. Radiometric dating measures radioactive parent isotopes and their decay products in minerals. Depending on the mineral and isotope system, the result may record when a mineral formed or when heat reset its isotopic system. In an impact study, researchers therefore ask what material was dated and whether the event being dated was impact heating, later alteration, or something else. The USGS explains the basic principles and limits of rock dating in its beginner’s guide to dating rocks.

Dating impact-heated or shocked material

Impact melts and minerals whose isotope systems were reset by impact heating can provide an age for the event. The sample’s history matters: heating can reset an isotopic signal, while later heating or hydrothermal alteration may change what a mineral preserves.

For the Manson impact structure in Iowa, Kunk and colleagues used argon-40/argon-39 age-spectrum dating on shocked microcline from the structure’s crystalline central uplift. Their 1989 USGS record reports an age of 65.7 ± 1.0 million years for that sample, interpreted by the authors as indistinguishable from the K–T boundary age within analytical precision. It is a result for the sampled material and method, not a universal age for impact craters. USGS: 40Ar-39Ar dating of the Manson impact structure.

Using zircon to reconstruct thermal history

Zircon (U-Th)/He thermochronometry has been applied to impactites from Chicxulub and the Ries structure. A NASA-hosted study describes how zircon’s response depends on the duration and temperature of heating, shock-related microstructures, and subsequent hydrothermal resetting. A zircon result can therefore record a sample’s thermal history rather than simply the moment the impact structure formed; its interpretation depends on the grain’s context. NASA Technical Reports Server: Zircon (U-Th)/He impact-crater thermochronometry.

How is crater counting used to estimate age?

On Mars and other planetary surfaces, researchers can estimate the age of a geological unit by counting craters and comparing their size-frequency distribution with a chronology model. This gives a model age for the unit’s surface history, not a direct radiometric date of impact melt or shocked minerals.

The result depends on which area and image data are used, how craters are identified and validated, the statistical treatment, and the chronology model. Resurfacing can bury or erase older craters, while preservation and the smallest craters that can be reliably counted affect the observed population. USGS publications describe the method’s application to Mars and recommendations for analyzing crater distributions:

How do scientists estimate the impactor’s size?

Impact-scaling relationships connect initial impact conditions to crater dimensions. Because a planetary-scale impact cannot be reproduced at full size in a laboratory, researchers use laboratory experiments, physically based scaling relationships, and numerical solutions. The appropriate scaling depends on factors such as impact speed, projectile and target properties, gravity, and whether material strength or gravity controls crater growth. Researchers compare measured crater dimensions with the model and add evidence such as crater form, ejecta distribution, impact melt, shocked minerals, and the target rocks’ setting. Ejecta distribution, for example, reflects the impactor’s size, velocity, and trajectory as well as the target’s composition and coherence. These observations constrain possible impact conditions; they do not turn rim-to-rim diameter into a direct, assumption-free measurement of the asteroid. USGS: Characterizing Meteor Crater Impact Melts Through Geochemistry and Textural Analysis.

Variables that change the inferred size

  • Speed and trajectory: They affect how impact energy is transferred and distributed, changing crater and ejecta formation.
  • Projectile properties: Density, composition, and structural coherence influence how the projectile couples its energy into the target.
  • Target geology: Strength, layering, porosity, fractures, and heterogeneity affect the crater produced under otherwise similar conditions.
  • Gravity and crater regime: Scaling differs depending on whether gravity or material strength chiefly controls crater growth.
  • Modification after impact: Erosion, burial, tectonic change, and resurfacing can alter crater dimensions or the crater population used for age estimates.

These factors mean an estimate should be tied to its assumptions and model. A useful comparison identifies the crater’s measured dimensions and morphology, target geology, assumed projectile density, speed and angle, and the scaling relationship or numerical model used.

What do real crater studies show?

Meteor Crater, Arizona

A 2025 USGS report describes Meteor Crater as about 1.2 km in diameter and 180 m deep, and summarizes a formation age of approximately 50,000 years and an iron-nickel impactor about 30 m across, traveling at an estimated 12–20 km/s. These are case-specific published figures, with the impactor and age estimates summarized from cited studies; they are not a general crater-to-asteroid conversion. The report also describes impact melts made from melted target rock mixed with projectile material, along with shocked silica-rich rocks, including high-pressure silica phases and shock-melted glass. Such evidence helps establish that an impact occurred and characterize its effects; dating and size estimates require interpreting it alongside the sample’s geological context and suitable models.

Bennu and the limits of transferring a calibration

A NASA-hosted 2022 study analyzed 1,560 craters on asteroid Bennu and reported a transition associated with the boulder population at crater diameters of roughly 2–3 m. It also found different crater-retention-age estimates for smaller and larger crater bins. The findings concern Bennu’s rubble-pile surface and illustrate why surface texture and scaling assumptions matter; they are not a calibration to apply directly to Earth. NASA Technical Reports Server: Crater population on asteroid (101955) Bennu.

Quick Recap

What should a reported age or size estimate include?

  • For an age: identify the sample and location, dated mineral or material, isotope system, event the system is interpreted to record, analytical uncertainty, and evidence for later resetting or alteration.
  • For an impactor size: give the measured crater dimensions and morphology, target geology, assumed projectile properties and impact conditions, model or scaling relationship, and uncertainty where reported.
  • For crater counts: state that the result is a model age, and identify the counted unit, crater-size distribution, chronology model, and relevant preservation or resurfacing limits.
