Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is no verified public Microsoft specification for the current maximum of the storage slider in retail Xbox Developer Mode. A community-reported path to it is Dev Home menu → Manage dev storage, but first identify what is actually full: development files, an app’s writable data, game-save storage, and other local storage are distinct categories, and the slider is not documented as changing all of them.
What is the Xbox Developer Mode storage limit?
Microsoft’s public documentation does not establish a universal maximum for the retail-console Manage dev storage slider. Do not treat a number repeated in a forum post or a user’s error message as an official limit. Microsoft’s documentation describes several storage areas used by Xbox titles, but those developer-facing categories do not define the limit of the retail Dev Home allocation. Microsoft’s local storage documentation does not specify the slider’s maximum.

How to adjust the reported Dev Home allocation
The following is a community-reported interface path, not a procedure documented by Microsoft. Menu labels or behavior may differ by console software version.

Microsoft says Dev Home opens when the console is in Developer Mode; the regular Xbox home experience indicates Retail Mode. See Microsoft’s Developer Mode FAQ.
- Open Dev Home’s menu and look for Manage dev storage. A community post describes this entry and a slider for changing the development-storage allocation: “Development files storage capped at 5 gigs, why?”. The post is a user report, not confirmation of an official limit.
- Before moving the slider, identify the location named in the warning. If it refers to an app’s LocalState or LocalCache, changing the development-files allocation may not resolve it. A community report describes those app-data capacities remaining unchanged after raising the allocation; that is an individual experience, not a general rule. The report is available here.
- Apply the change only after reviewing the console’s confirmation. Follow any on-screen restart prompt. The available documentation does not establish whether resizing preserves every installed app and its data on all console and OS versions, so do not assume it is lossless.
To return to Retail Mode, open Dev Home and select Leave developer mode. Microsoft’s FAQ states: “If you want to play games, you can open Dev Home and switch back to Retail Mode by using the Leave developer mode button.”

Which Xbox storage area is full?
Xbox storage is not one interchangeable pool. Microsoft’s GDK documentation describes these local storage categories for Xbox One titles. They explain why an error in one location may not respond to a change in another, but they are not a specification of the retail Dev Home slider.
| Storage area | What Microsoft documents | Relevance to the Dev Home slider |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary local storage | 2 GB of dedicated storage for a title; contents may be deleted after the title ends. Microsoft does not display a date on the referenced page. | This title-storage figure is not the retail Dev Home allocation limit. |
| Installed game data | A separate local storage category in Microsoft’s GDK documentation. | The documentation does not say that changing the retail Dev Home slider changes this category. |
| Developer scratch partition | A development-only storage area. | It is a developer-facing concept, not a published maximum for the retail slider. |
| Persistent Local Storage | Title-specific storage sized according to what the title requests. | It is distinct from the Dev Home allocation; the documentation does not equate the two. |
Do not confuse Developer Mode storage with game-save limits
Microsoft’s Game Saves documentation gives a maximum of 256 MB per title for the documented user save systems. The page was last updated July 7, 2026. Microsoft distinguishes Game Saves from console Persistent Local Storage, so this quota is not the Dev Mode development-files allocation. See Microsoft’s Game Saves documentation.

Troubleshoot a storage warning before changing settings
- Read the exact path or storage name in the error. Separate development files from an app’s LocalState or LocalCache, a title’s save data, or another volume.
- Record the console model and system software version. The available sources do not establish model-by-model slider limits or prove identical behavior across versions.
- Decide whether you need a larger allocation or more free space. Removing unneeded content and resizing an allocation are different actions; the reviewed documentation does not show that an external drive changes the Dev Home allocation.
- Use the slider as a targeted adjustment, not a universal fix. If the warning names app-specific writable data, the community report above is a reason to investigate that app’s storage separately—not proof that all apps behave the same way.
What the published limits do—and do not—tell you
Microsoft’s public materials document title storage categories, a per-title save quota, and how to switch modes. They do not publish the current retail Dev Home slider maximum or a complete resize procedure. Microsoft’s Developer Mode Activation terms describe activating a retail console for application development, but that program information does not set a storage limit. The terms page was last updated December 23, 2021. Read the Developer Mode Activation terms.
