Connected to APIs and workflow systems, it can also take bounded actions. The shift is real, but adoption and results vary. Worker-reported time savings, a partially automated task, and an end-to-end process running on its own are different things—and should be measured separately.
How is generative AI changing enterprise automation?
Traditional business process automation is strongest when inputs are structured and steps are predictable. Generative AI adds capabilities for working with less structured material, such as emails, documents, and natural-language requests. A system can interpret a request, extract information, summarize a file, classify a case, or draft a response. Connected to enterprise APIs and workflow software, it may then pass that result to another system or initiate an action.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Assist: AI drafts, summarizes, or answers questions while a person decides what to do.
- Automate a step: AI handles a bounded part of a process, with deterministic checks or human review around it.
- Use an agent: AI selects among permitted tools or actions to pursue a task, subject to access controls and oversight.
In practice, these patterns can coexist in one workflow. A language model might extract details from a request, while ordinary rules validate required fields and route the case. The model’s ability to interpret varied inputs does not make its outputs inherently reliable, nor does connecting it to tools make a whole process suitable for autonomous execution.

What tasks can AI agents automate at work?
Commonly described applications cluster around repetitive work that involves language, information retrieval, or moving data between systems. Whether a task is automated end to end depends on the quality of the source data, integration, exception handling, and consequences of an incorrect action.
Customer support and query handling
AI can summarize a customer issue, find relevant information, draft a response, or help route a case. OpenAI’s 2025 report lists customer support among common API deployment areas. A Google Cloud Wells Fargo case describes reusable APIs and generative AI experimentation for branch-banker queries; the vendor case reports about 20% lower workflow time for query resolution. That is a customer-case result, not evidence that other banks or support teams will see the same outcome.
IT and employee services
IT workflows can use AI to interpret a help request, retrieve troubleshooting material, and prepare or route a proposed resolution. OpenAI’s 2025 report says 87% of surveyed IT workers reported faster issue resolution using ChatGPT Enterprise. For employee services, it says 75% of surveyed HR professionals reported improved employee engagement. These are worker reports from an OpenAI survey, not independent measurements of the effect across all IT or HR operations.
Rank #2
Microsoft’s workplace and IT-services documentation describes agents that connect chat requests to systems of record. It also describes using deterministic workflows for repeatable actions and retaining approvals or handoffs for sensitive cases. That combination can keep flexible language handling away from decisions that need fixed business rules or human judgment.
Documents, audits, and knowledge work
Document-heavy processes can use AI to extract, compare, or summarize information before a person reviews it. In a Google Cloud AES case, the vendor reports that AI agents helped process audit documentation: work that had previously taken much longer could be completed in about an hour, with a human still in the review process. The case also reports a 10–20% increase in audit accuracy. These are AES and vendor-published case claims, not independently verified or general results.
Software development, data analysis, and marketing
OpenAI’s 2025 report identifies coding and developer tools, data analysis, extraction, and summarization as enterprise API use cases. It also says 85% of surveyed marketing and product users reported faster campaign execution, and 73% of surveyed engineers reported faster code delivery. These figures describe respondents’ reported experience; they do not establish that entire roles or development processes have been automated.
Are companies actually seeing productivity gains?
Some surveys and customer cases report benefits, but the measures are not interchangeable. OpenAI’s 2025 report combines aggregated and de-identified usage data with a survey of workers at nearly 100 enterprises. It says surveyed workers attributed 40–60 minutes saved per active day to ChatGPT Enterprise use, and 75% reported improved speed or quality. The findings describe OpenAI’s customer base and respondents’ reports; they are not a census of enterprises or a controlled estimate of economy-wide productivity.

Those survey responses use a different population and measure from OpenAI’s worker-level findings. They should not be combined into a single estimate of AI’s business impact or treated as proof that AI caused a financial result.
For an individual deployment, measure the task before and after introduction: cycle time, quality, error and rework rates, volume handled, and operating costs. A quicker first draft may not reduce total handling time if staff must spend longer checking it; higher throughput may not improve outcomes if error rates rise. Include integration, review, monitoring, and exception-handling work in the cost comparison.
How common are AI agents in enterprise workflows?
Agentic automation is emerging, but survey responses do not indicate that it is universal. McKinsey’s 2025 Global Survey reports that 23% of respondents said their organization was scaling an agentic AI system in at least one area, while a further 39% said they were experimenting. These are respondent-reported adoption stages from that survey, not a census of all organizations or evidence that agents have replaced end-to-end processes.
The practical distinction is what the system is allowed to do. An assistant may suggest an action; a workflow may execute one step after a rule check; an agent may choose and call among tools. As the system gains authority to write records, approve requests, or trigger consequential actions, the cost of misunderstood instructions, bad data, or an incorrect output rises.
How should an enterprise decide whether to automate a workflow?
Evaluate the proposed workflow against its actual operating conditions, not just a successful demonstration. The following questions help separate a promising bounded use from a risky or uneconomic attempt at full autonomy.
Best Value
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Workflow fit | Is the task repetitive, language-heavy, and bounded? Which steps must remain deterministic? |
| Data and integration | Can the system access current, authorized information and call the required systems safely? |
| Reliability | How will outputs and actions be evaluated on representative cases, including exceptions and adversarial inputs? |
| Autonomy and impact | Can the system only draft or recommend, or can it write, approve, or trigger an irreversible action? |
| Governance | Are access controls, approvals, logs, ownership, monitoring, and incident response in place? |
| Economics | Do measured cycle time, quality, throughput, and operating costs justify deployment and ongoing maintenance? |
How do enterprises keep AI agents under control?
Governance has to be operational: it should shape what an agent can access and do, how people review its work, and how its activity can be investigated or stopped. NIST’s 2024 AI Risk Management Framework Generative AI Profile is voluntary, cross-sector guidance for governing, mapping, measuring, and managing risk across the lifecycle. It is not a compliance certification or a guarantee that a system will be safe or effective.
Microsoft’s agent-risk guidance identifies risks including task deviation, inadequate human oversight, poor intelligibility, handling of malicious instructions, sensitive-data leakage, and excessive permissions. Its recommendations include limiting tools and data to what the task needs, requiring approval for high-impact or irreversible actions, making planned and completed actions visible, and providing a safe way to pause or stop an agent.
A practical deployment sequence
- Choose a bounded workflow. Define its start and end, the intended outcome, and which cases or decisions remain with people.
- Establish a baseline. Record current time, quality, cost, volume, error rates, and exception handling so the trial has a meaningful comparison.
- Test representative cases. Include routine inputs, edge cases, missing or conflicting data, and adversarial instructions. Test the model and integrations together.
- Keep business rules deterministic. Use explicit checks for requirements such as permitted values, mandatory fields, and authorization rather than relying on generated text alone.
- Scope permissions and approvals. Give the system only the tools and data it needs. Route consequential actions to a person until evidence supports a different control design.
- Log and monitor. Retain appropriate records of prompts, context, tool calls, approvals, outcomes, and exceptions; assign an owner to review failures and update the workflow.
- Expand autonomy gradually. Use measured quality and exception performance to decide whether to extend the system’s responsibilities; preserve a way to correct or stop activity.
This is a practical synthesis of NIST and Microsoft guidance, not a single prescribed implementation standard. The appropriate controls depend on the information, systems, and consequences involved.

A screenshot API is a narrow building block, not an enterprise automation platform. For a workflow that needs a captured webpage as an input or record, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its stated options include PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output, and the API can be called from software that orchestrates a larger process. That may be useful for a bounded capture step; it does not by itself decide what a business process should do with the result.
Example: request a webpage capture
Use an API key in place of YOUR_API_KEY and set the target page in the URL parameter. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can remove cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Its responses report page verdict and billing status in headers; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
What generative AI automation does not establish
Evidence of AI use is not the same as evidence that a workflow is automated, and a workflow step handled by a model is not the same as an entire process operating autonomously. The cited reports and cases support examples of usage and reported outcomes, but they do not establish a universal rate of jobs eliminated, enterprise productivity uplift, return on investment, or error reduction. Treat outcome claims according to their source and measure the specific process being considered.
