Good website image management is a repeatable workflow: preserve original files, choose a format and compression level for each image, write alternative text according to its purpose, deliver responsive sizes, and check how images appear and load on real pages. The right setup depends on your CMS, hosting stack, site design, and publishing volume.
Start with a reliable image intake workflow
Keep an untouched source file for each image, then generate the formats and sizes needed for publication from that source. Originals let you create a better variant later without repeatedly recompressing an already degraded file. Store source assets in a predictable location and establish who can approve, replace, or retire published images.

Use names and records people can maintain
- Choose descriptive, consistent filenames rather than opaque names such as
IMG_4821.jpg. Include useful subject or project terms without turning the filename into a string of keywords. - Record ownership, permission, attribution, and any usage restrictions where applicable. Keep this information with the asset or in the CMS fields your team actually maintains.
- Decide which variants the site needs based on its real image slots. Every additional size or format creates files to store, publish, and invalidate in caches.
There is no universal number of image variants that suits every site. Match variants to the sizes your layout uses and the devices your audience visits with, rather than exporting one oversized image everywhere or building a rarely used matrix of files.

Format selection is a trade-off among visual fidelity, file size, transparency, compatibility, and the publishing stack. WebP and AVIF are useful modern raster formats when their compression and features suit the asset. JPEG remains a widely compatible lossy option for photographs; PNG is useful when lossless detail or transparency matters; SVG is appropriate for scalable diagrams and interface graphics.
#1 Best Overall
| Image type | Formats to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Photographs | WebP or AVIF; JPEG where compatibility calls for it | Look for visible banding, blur, or other compression damage, especially around fine detail. |
| Screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art | Lossless WebP or PNG; SVG for suitable vector artwork | Small text, sharp edges, and flat colors can make lossy artifacts conspicuous. |
| Scalable interface graphics and diagrams | SVG | Confirm the publishing system accepts SVG and that the image behaves correctly at the sizes used. |
MDN discusses WebP and AVIF for raster imagery, JPEG for photographic use, PNG for lossless imagery and transparency, and SVG for scalable graphics in its image file type guidance. Add fallbacks if the clients supported by your site require them.
Compress by comparing real outputs
Compression is a visual judgment, not a magic percentage. Export a representative set of assets at several settings, compare the resulting file sizes, and inspect them at their intended display size. A setting that looks acceptable on a photograph may damage lettering, thin lines, or flat-color artwork.

Write alternative text for the image’s role
Decide whether an image is informative, decorative, or functional in its specific context before writing its alternative text. The same image can need a different alternative in different articles, or no alternative at all when it is purely decorative.

- Informative: Provide a concise text equivalent for the essential information the image contributes.
- Decorative: Use
alt=""when the image adds no meaningful information beyond the surrounding content. - Functional: If the image is a link or button, describe its action or destination rather than its appearance.
- Complex: For a chart or detailed diagram, provide an adequate text equivalent for the information; a short alt attribute alone may not convey all the detail.
Write a clear replacement for the image, not a filename or an announcement that an image is present. Read the alt text together with the preceding sentence to check that the combined passage communicates the intended meaning. W3C WAI’s Images Tutorial covers informative, decorative, functional, text-containing, complex, and grouped images; MDN also explains the alt attribute.
Deliver responsive images with srcset and sizes
Responsive markup gives the browser a choice of image candidates so it can select a resource suited to the displayed slot and device. With width-descriptor candidates in srcset, provide sizes to describe the expected CSS display width. Keep a fallback src.
<img
src="/images/team-800.jpg"
srcset="/images/team-400.jpg 400w,
/images/team-800.jpg 800w,
/images/team-1200.jpg 1200w"
sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 800px"
width="800"
height="533"
alt="The volunteer team arranging boxes for delivery">
In this example, sizes describes a full-viewport-width slot up to 600 CSS pixels and an 800-pixel slot on wider layouts. Adjust it to match your page’s actual CSS; an inaccurate description can lead the browser to choose an unsuitable candidate. The width and height attributes reflect the image’s intrinsic proportions and help the page reserve its layout space.
Use <picture> when the browser should choose among formats or when you need art direction, such as a different crop on narrow screens. Keep an img fallback with src inside it:

For responsive-image syntax and candidate selection, see web.dev’s responsive images guide. Google Search Central also recommends preserving a src fallback in responsive markup in its image SEO guidance.
Make images discoverable to search engines
Use ordinary HTML image elements for content images you want crawlers to discover. Google says it can find image URLs in an img element’s src, including an img nested inside picture; CSS background images are not indexed as images by Google. An image sitemap can help expose images that might otherwise be hard to discover. Google supports common formats including JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF in an image src. These practices support discovery but do not guarantee a particular search preview: Google’s image-preview choice is automated.
See Google Search Central’s image SEO best practices for its current guidance.

- Confirm the asset: Check that you have the original, the rights and attribution are recorded where needed, and the selected crop suits the page.
- Review the output: Compare file size and appearance at the actual display size. Check text, edges, transparency, and detail appropriate to the asset.
- Check delivery: Confirm the page uses suitable responsive candidates, accurate
sizes, and a fallbacksrc. Verify that dimensions and layout behavior match the image. - Read the alternative in context: Confirm the image’s role and make its alt text a useful equivalent, an empty string for decoration, or a description of its function.
- Check discovery and performance: Confirm important images appear in HTML markup and measure performance on real pages rather than assuming an export setting improved the experience.

If you need a screenshot of a published page to review how its images render, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. Its capture process accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The service also has an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and any MCP client. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
