You can run a YouTube encoder on a Hetzner Cloud server as a Docker Compose service, with a restart policy and persistent media or configuration mounts. That keeps the encoder independent of your home computer, but it does not guarantee a healthy, uninterrupted stream: you still need to verify YouTube ingest, monitor output, and plan recovery for failures Docker cannot detect.
This guide covers the self-hosted Compose setup, YouTube configuration, security, testing, troubleshooting, and the limits of treating one live event as “24/7.”

What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
- A Hetzner Cloud server. Hetzner offers a Docker CE app image documented with Ubuntu 24.04, Docker, and the Compose plugin preinstalled. Check the currently offered image when creating a server: Hetzner Cloud Apps.
- An encoder or playback process that can send your source to YouTube Live. This article shows how to manage that process with Compose; it does not prescribe a particular encoder image or command.
- Your media and configuration files, plus a plan for protecting and rotating the YouTube stream key.
There is no evidence-based universal minimum server size or current server price for this workload. Encoding demand varies with source, resolution, frame rate, codec, and filters. Test the actual workload on the instance you intend to use rather than relying on a generic CPU or memory estimate.

- Open YouTube Studio and confirm the channel can stream live. Complete any verification or activation steps shown there.
- Create or select a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s configuration, following that encoder’s documented settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not commit it to a repository, include it in a shared Compose file, or print it in logs. If it is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room; YouTube describes the stream settings at Manage your live stream settings.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. The exact configuration fields depend on the encoder you choose; use its documentation to set the ingest URL and key rather than assuming every image accepts the same command-line syntax. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Create a Hetzner server and secure access
Choose the Docker CE app or install Docker yourself
If you want a preinstalled setup, choose Hetzner’s Docker CE app when creating the Cloud server. Hetzner documents the app as based on Ubuntu 24.04 and including Docker and the Compose plugin. Verify those details in the current app listing before you deploy. If you use a different image, install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin using the current Docker Engine installation instructions.
Review firewall rules before starting the service
Allow only the inbound access you need to administer the server, and restrict SSH to trusted source addresses where possible. A Hetzner firewall with no inbound rules drops inbound traffic, according to the Hetzner Cloud API documentation. A typical encoder connects outbound to YouTube; do not expose a streaming listener unless your selected architecture requires one.
Define the stream service in Compose
On the server, create a directory for the deployment and a Compose file. The following is an illustrative structure, not a tested, ready-to-run encoder configuration. Replace the image, command, media path, and secret handling with values supported by your chosen encoder image.

Use a deliberate image tag rather than relying on an unpinned latest image, and define the encoder’s actual command or configuration. Confirm that the image supports your input format and desired output. Compose can manage the process lifecycle; it cannot make an incompatible source or invalid encoder command work.
Keep persistent data outside the container
Mount media and configuration that must survive container replacement from host paths or another persistent storage location. The example mounts are read-only so the service cannot alter them; adjust only if the encoder needs write access. A container’s writable layer is not a substitute for persistent storage.
Protect the stream key
Do not put a live key in a public Compose file or source repository. Use a protected runtime file or a secrets mechanism supported by your Compose deployment. Compose secrets are mounted as files, but how those secret files are provisioned is platform-specific; follow the guidance for your host and Compose implementation. Ensure file permissions and access are limited to the service and administrators who need them.

Start, inspect, and update the Compose service
- From the directory containing the Compose file, run
docker compose up -dto start the service in the background. - Run
docker compose psto inspect service status. - Run
docker compose logs -f streamerto follow the encoder’s logs. Avoid configurations that print the stream key. - When you change Compose configuration or environment values, apply the changed definition by bringing the service up again with
docker compose up -d.docker compose restartonly restarts the existing container; it does not apply changed Compose configuration or environment values. See the Compose restart command reference.
For a production deployment, Docker’s guidance discusses using a production-specific Compose override and a restart policy: Use Compose in production. A policy such as unless-stopped can restart a stopped container, but it is not a health check for the video being sent to YouTube.

Configure the encoder for a format accepted by YouTube. YouTube’s documented guidance for an incorrect-format error identifies H.264 video and AAC audio; check the current encoder settings guidance alongside the selected encoder’s documentation. YouTube publishes bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate at its recommended upload encoding settings; choose settings for the actual output rather than copying an unrelated preset.
- Start the Compose service and open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and health indicator while the encoder sends video. Confirm that the intended audio and moving content are present, not just a static or silent frame.
- Open the watch page and check playback, then test on mobile as well as the monitoring view.
- Leave upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% headroom above total stream bitrate; account for both primary and backup bitrate where applicable. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Observe logs and YouTube health during a representative test before relying on the deployment.
What Docker restart policies can and cannot recover
A restart policy helps when the container’s main process exits. It does not prove that YouTube is receiving healthy video, and it may not catch a frozen source, an invalid key, an ingest problem, or a process that stays alive while producing unusable output. Server, network, source-media, and credential failures also need their own detection and recovery plan.

Monitor both the encoder and the receiving stream. If uninterrupted output matters, plan a genuinely independent backup encoder or path and exercise failover; YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing encoder failover. A second Compose service on the same server is not automatically an independent backup. See YouTube’s streaming tips and Docker’s Compose production guidance.
Plan for long streams and archive behavior
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, as described in its live stream settings guidance. That statement does not establish that one event can run indefinitely or specify exactly what happens when a stream exceeds 12 hours. For a very long schedule, plan how to restart or segment the event and confirm YouTube’s current behavior before relying on a single continuous session.

Troubleshoot common failures

Costs and trade-offs
Hetzner server size and price depend on the instance and current offering; the available guidance does not establish a workload-specific minimum or price. Estimate your deployment from the server configuration you choose, then test CPU, memory, and network behavior under the real encoder workload. Cloud compute removes dependence on a home PC and connection, but it still leaves you responsible for server administration, monitoring, updates, source files, and recovery planning.

Software encoding and hardware encoding are both possible categories, but there is no workload-specific winner established here. Compare them using your actual source, target settings, and server capabilities rather than assuming either will be cheaper or more reliable.
