Game studios protect unreleased games through confidentiality rules, controlled access to test builds, agreements with external testers, and measures that can help trace unauthorized sharing. Public policies also set expectations for leaked footage and spoilers. The examples below show how particular companies, platforms, and providers describe these controls; they are not a universal industry standard.
What studios are trying to protect
Before release, a game build can reveal unfinished features, visuals, characters, or plot developments. Studios may also need to limit who can access a build and what participants are allowed to share. The available examples document controls for confidential information, test access, and public posting. They do not establish how studios internally divide or compartmentalize story details, so it would be misleading to present that as a standard practice.

How confidentiality and communications are handled
Ubisoft’s Code of Conduct says employees must continue to protect unreleased confidential information after a game has been announced. It also directs employees who are not official spokespeople to route media, analyst, or investor inquiries to the appropriate communications staff. The code recommends secure processes for logins, device configuration, and third-party services. These are Ubisoft’s stated expectations, not proof that every studio follows the same policy. How confidential playtests are set up
Steam access does not automatically create an NDA
Steamworks describes a way to run a confidential playtest for an unannounced game using release override keys on the unreleased base app. Its documentation cautions that accepting a Steam key does not automatically make the recipient subject to the developer’s NDA. The developer therefore needs a separate process to register participants and secure their agreement before granting access. External testing can add access and recording controls
PlaytestCloud describes options that include requiring NDA acceptance before build access, disabling access when a test concludes, and checking that a build does not inadvertently identify the studio or project. It also describes optional visible watermarks linked to a unique player ID. These are capabilities described by a testing provider, not evidence that all studios or playtests use them. What watermarks can—and cannot—do
A watermark can make a recording or other material more traceable to a tester or distribution context. PlaytestCloud says its visible watermark links recordings to a unique tester ID. Denuvo by Irdeto describes identifiers associated with users, builds, or distribution environments. Those descriptions support a limited conclusion: watermarking may provide clues that help investigate unauthorized sharing. What publishers say about leaked content and spoilers
Square Enix
Square Enix’s West Material Usage Policy prohibits posting unofficial game content, including leaked or embargo-violating material, and asks creators to mark spoilers clearly.
