Choose the location before the container: a polypropylene bin can keep off dust, but it cannot fix heat, humidity, or flood exposure. Sort toys by material and condition, support fragile pieces, and treat plastic, rubber, metal, and paper packaging according to their different needs.
Choose a safe storage location first
Look for a clean indoor space with stable conditions and low risk of leaks or flooding. Keep toys away from windows, vents, heaters, and other heat sources. The Library of Congress advises against storing valuables in basements, attics, or garages, where temperature and humidity are less controlled and water risks may be higher. A storage bin does not compensate for an unsuitable room.

Light exposure accumulates over time, so keep toys in the dark when they are not being displayed. Closed boxes and switching off storage lights can reduce exposure. For plastic and rubber objects, the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) recommends a maximum illumination of 150 lux and UV below 75 microwatts per lumen. These are conservation recommendations, not universal damage thresholds for every toy.
Sort and inspect the collection
Before packing, identify the materials present: plastic, rubber, metal, paper or cardboard packaging, fabric, and composites. Note the condition of each piece. Watch for active corrosion, tacky surfaces, cracks, distortion, powdering, mold, or a strong acidic odor. Materials and construction vary, so an unidentified or composite toy may need a more cautious approach than a clearly identified, stable object.

- Separate actively corroding metal from stable objects.
- Keep sticky or degraded rubber from touching neighboring toys, paper, fabric, or other porous materials.
- Set aside structurally unstable, powdering, or strongly odorous items for assessment rather than packing them tightly with the rest.
Choose containers and supports that suit the toys
Use stable plastics for secondary protection
Polyethylene or polypropylene bags, sleeves, or bins without added slip or coating agents are considered stable and inert by the Library of Congress. Confirm the container material rather than relying on a generic “plastic” label. Avoid PVC and plastics of unknown composition. A suitable bin can protect against dust and incidental water, but it is not climate control or floodproofing.
Do not automatically seal every toy in an airtight container. Some materials, including cellulose esters and Ebonite, can release acidic gases; ventilation may be needed. If a toy has a pronounced odor or its material is uncertain, avoid sealing it in with other objects and seek advice from a qualified objects conservator.

Support pieces instead of stacking them
Use stable, padded supports to prevent bending, flexing, pressure, and stress. Brittle toys may break under their own weight, while sticky rubber can adhere to adjacent surfaces. Avoid stacking heavy objects on delicate toys or packaging. Where contact is a concern, use an appropriate non-stick interleaving material rather than letting surfaces touch directly.
Adjust storage to the material
Plastic and rubber toys
Radiation, high humidity and temperature, oxygen and pollutant gases, and physical stress can all contribute to deterioration, according to the CCI’s Care of Objects Made from Rubber and Plastic. Avoid UV and intense light, heat sources, and relative humidity above 65%. Cold can make plastics more brittle, so do not assume that colder storage is always safer.
For routine dust removal, the CCI recommends careful dry brushing or vacuuming. It advises against using solvents or water-based cleaning solutions on rubber and plastics. If simple dry cleaning is inadequate, get expert advice rather than escalating to household cleaners.

The CCI discusses cool storage around 4°C or cold storage around -18°C only for selected plastics when the preservation benefit outweighs risks such as brittleness and shrinkage. Such storage requires careful support, cushioning, moisture control, and precautions against condensation. A household refrigerator or freezer is not a universal storage solution for vintage toys; consult a conservator before considering it.
Metal toys
For stable metal artifacts in a mixed collection, the CCI’s Storage of Metals recommends 35–55% relative humidity. Isolate metal showing active corrosion and keep it below 35% RH pending assessment. Keep metal storage clean and ventilated, use chemically stable enclosures and supports, and inspect regularly. A consumer humidity monitor can help track room conditions, but it is not equivalent to conservation-grade monitoring.

Paper, cardboard, and original packaging
Paper benefits from cool, relatively dry, clean, stable storage with minimal light. The Library of Congress recommends about 35% RH as a general paper-storage guideline in Care, Handling and Storage of Works on Paper. Acid- and lignin-free folders, mats, or boxes may help protect suitable paper items, but check compatibility with the material and any printed or painted media. Keep paper flat where appropriate and avoid rubber bands, adhesive tape, and glue.

Relative-humidity targets depend on material and condition; a mixed collection may not have one ideal setting for every object. Use a thermometer and humidity monitor to observe the room, then inspect stored toys periodically for changes rather than assuming conditions remain stable.

- Check for new odor, tackiness, cracking, distortion, corrosion, or mold.
- Look for changes to paper packaging, supports, and any materials touching the toys.
- Reassess the storage location after leaks, flooding, heating changes, or other environmental shifts.
If a piece is actively corroding, sticky, powdering, strongly odorous, or structurally unstable, isolate it as appropriate and consult a qualified objects conservator before trying specialist treatments or very-low-humidity storage.
