Start with the symptom and the platform: the known error-code workarounds and several PC fixes documented by The Coalition are from the open beta, not confirmed fixes for the October 6, 2026 launch build. Match the steps below to the error you actually see, check current game and driver requirements before changing software, and use Gears support or the live service-status page if the problem persists. The game is available on Xbox Series X|S and Windows, with Steam also listed as a PC option; the October 1 Xbox Wire post names Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW for cloud play.
First, identify the platform and symptom
A crash, an account sign-in error, and a brief hitch during first launch point to different causes. The table separates the relevant routes; beta-era steps are identified as such because the official Gears open-beta FAQ does not confirm that every listed issue remains in the launch version.

| Where you play | Symptom to match | Relevant next step |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC through the Xbox app | LowLevelFatalError at launch | Beta-era FAQ points to the Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool. |
| Windows PC through Steam | Xbox account-linking problem | Check the gamertag signed in to the Xbox PC app; the beta FAQ also points to the Gaming Services Repair Tool. |
| Windows PC, any storefront | Named code, startup crash, or stutter | Match the exact code or first-launch behavior to the sections below; do not apply a code-specific fix to a different error. |
| Xbox Series X|S | quentin-ephyra or Series S hitching after extended Horde Siege | Use the beta-era Quick Resume or restart guidance only if the symptom matches. |
If you can reach the menu, note the storefront, full error text or code, when the issue occurs, and whether it began after an update. Those details help distinguish a local launch problem from an account or service issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix the named beta-era launch and account errors
The following mappings are specifically from the open-beta FAQ. It described a beta client and noted that stability and performance work was ongoing, so treat these as targeted troubleshooting leads—not confirmed fixes for all launch-era failures.

Xbox app: “Failure to Launch – LowLevelFatalError”
For this exact message in the Xbox PC app, the FAQ directs players to the Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool. Follow the tool instructions linked from the FAQ. This is not a reason to edit game files or bypass Xbox sign-in or security checks. If the error remains, check current Gears support and service status rather than assuming the beta workaround still applies.
Steam: Xbox account-linking trouble
- Open the Xbox PC app and confirm that you are signed in with the Xbox gamertag you intend to use with the game.
- If linking still fails, use the Gaming Services Repair Tool referenced in the beta FAQ.
- If the problem continues, record the exact linking message and contact Gears support. The FAQ does not establish whether this beta issue persists in the Steam launch version.
Xbox consoles: “quentin-ephyra”
The beta FAQ maps this exact code to an authentication problem associated with Xbox Quick Resume and advises disabling Quick Resume in Xbox system settings. Restart the game and try again. Do not use this workaround for a different error code; if quentin-ephyra persists, check current support information.
Windows: “bryce-vigil” or “gill-gutpuncher”
The beta FAQ associates either code with a mismatch between the device’s hardware date/time and local time. In Windows, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then select Sync now. Retry only after confirming the displayed date, time, and time zone are correct. This mapping is beta-era and does not apply to unrelated launch errors.

If the game crashes on PC startup
Before reinstalling or changing graphics settings, check the current official game and GPU-vendor requirements for your Windows version and hardware. The named driver versions below appeared in the beta FAQ; they are not verified launch requirements.
- NVIDIA: the beta FAQ said GeForce Game Ready Driver 610.74 or newer was needed to launch its beta client, and that older NVIDIA drivers would not launch it.
- AMD and Intel: the beta FAQ listed minimum beta driver versions of AMD 26.7.1 and Intel 101.8864. It also advised Intel users to update their Intel BIOS.
- OBS recording: the beta FAQ warned that older OBS versions could crash the beta and specified v29.0.0 or newer.
These version numbers and warnings are reported in the beta FAQ, not confirmed current launch instructions. Check the current game requirements and the relevant hardware vendor’s guidance before updating a driver or firmware. Avoid BIOS changes unless the manufacturer’s instructions apply to your exact system.
Tell first-launch shader work from ongoing stutter
Short hitching during the first launch
Shader compilation can cause a temporary burst of work when a game first starts. Microsoft says Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) supplies precompiled shaders with the download to reduce that work and runtime shader-compilation stutter on supported Windows devices. For E-Day, Microsoft reports first-launch shader compilation taking a few seconds with ASD versus several minutes on a typical PC without it, and an approximately 95% reduction in shader-compilation time. That is Microsoft’s claim for shader compilation in the described scenario—not a 95% frame-rate increase, a guarantee for every PC, or a fix for crashes or unrelated stutter. See Microsoft’s ASD explanation and current compatibility details.

Microsoft lists Windows 11 24H2 or higher for ASD, along with AMD RDNA 1 through RDNA 4 using Adrenalin 26.6.1 or higher and Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Series using driver 2026.08.3 or higher. Its post said Intel Arc B-Series B570/B580, Intel Core Ultra Series 2/3, all RTX GPUs, and RTX Spark would be supported later in October; check the linked page for the latest status rather than assuming those additions are already available. Microsoft says to install the Xbox PC app before downloading E-Day to experience ASD, and recommends current drivers.

Stutter that continues after the first launch
ASD addresses shader-compilation work; it does not explain every frame-rate drop or hitch. Check whether the problem is repeatable, whether it occurs in one mode or area, and whether the system meets the current official PC specifications. Xbox Wire published the final PC specifications as an image, so consult the official specifications page for the actual hardware tiers rather than relying on an incomplete text summary.
PC Gamer reported a ray-tracing-capable GPU requirement and 115 GB of free SSD space, but those figures are secondary reporting and should be checked against Xbox Wire’s official specifications image before making a hardware decision. Freeing space or using a compatible SSD can address an installation-capacity mismatch; the available sources do not establish that buying storage fixes crashes or poor frame rate. The PC Gamer report is not a substitute for the official requirements.

Xbox Series S: hitching after Horde Siege
The beta FAQ described a specific case: some Xbox Series S players could encounter hitching after extended Horde Siege sessions while playing in Quality Mode. Its workaround was to fully quit and restart the game, which it said restored normal performance for the next session. Use that step if your situation matches; the FAQ does not confirm that the issue persists in the October launch build or that it applies to other Xbox modes and consoles.
When to check service status or choose cloud play
If the error appears to involve authentication, sign-in, or connecting to the game rather than a local crash, check the support and service-status resources linked from the October 1 Xbox Wire launch post. The post also lists Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW as cloud availability routes. Cloud play is an alternative way to access the game, not a repair for a faulty local installation, incompatible PC, or console issue.
